I-le enrolled in The Navy V-72 Rrogram aT Mercer UniversiTy, from which he received his Bachelor of ArTs Degree in January 79414. ln April of ThaT year he enTered USNR Midship- men School aT Cornell where he was commissioned and married on 26 July 7944. l-lis wife, The former Ann Lindsey Chapman, is a graduaTe of Mercer UniversiTy. The Sheppards have Two sons: William L., Jr., and RoberT Harvey. As an Ensign, Commander Sheppard was assigned To NAB, Coronado, California where he served unTil reassignmenT in ,OcTober 79411 as BoaT Group Gunnery Officer aboard The USS GALLATIN lARA-763i. I-le be- came ship Gunnery Officer in OcTober 7945. ln Marglq of 7946 he was Transferred To NAS Jacksonville, Flori- da where he augmenTed To The regular Navy in Novem- ber and was ordered To The USS DAYTON lCL-705i To serve as Fire ConTrol Officer. In January 7949 he was selecTed for enrollmenT in General Line School, from which he graduaTed in De- cember 7949. l-le Then served on The STaff of ClN- CLANTFLT unTil July 7950.
