Arriving in Livorno, Italy, the officers and men of USS NEWMAN K. PERRY IDDR-883i learned of a disastrous fire which swept the third story ol a local orphanage, leaving forty children and their guardians without winter clothing in a severely damaged struc- ture. The Destroyermen wanted to help, but time seemingly worked against ' ' ' d I d them. The radar picket destroyer arrived on Friday and was sche u e to resume operations with the SIXTH FLEET early the following Monday. Nevertheless, an advance party visited the Instituto della Madonnina and decided that ship's lorce could at least revamp the building's electrical system, thereby ensuring that similar blazes would not occur in the future. To keep the children lrom underfoot while repairs progressed, PERRY duty section personnel entertained them at a messdecks party with cartoons cookies, and camradeship. When the ship sailed, even the sixty volunteers who devoted a total of 300 man hours of liberty labor ta OPERATION ORPHAN were surprised at what they had accomplished during the weekend. The electrical system had been completely renewed. Five fire-damaged rooms and the central dining areas boasted new paint. Two central corridors were freshly plas- tered, and the debris left by the fire removed. OPERATION ORPHAN was undertaken with the support of USS SARA- IOGA ICVA-602, USS TI-IREADPIN fSS-4lOI, and USS MACDONOUGH '.G-82 and coordinated through MSTS, MEDSUBAREA, Livorno. f y x X x - --: mf .V , 1 L if f xi I ,V , L I l , i V t I ,f , V X Q t I , NJ ' I , I ' , .
