COMMANDER DESTROYER SQUADRON SIX I s CAPTAIN ROBERT S. MANDELKORN, USN U A Captain Robert S. MANDELKORN, USN, relieved Captain R. R. GREEN,.USN, as Commander Destroyer Squadron SIX on 28 March 1960 at Beirut, Lebanon. Prioruto assuming command of Destroyer Squadron SIX Captain MANDELKORN was Commanding Officer, USS MISSISSINEVVA QAO-1445, Flagship, Service Force SIXTH Fleet. . Captain MANDELKORN entered the Naval Academy in July 1931 and received his commission as Ensi n USN in une 1 first tour of duty was aboard the USS PORT- Naval Academy as Assistant Plebe Football g , , J 935. His LAND QCA-335, after which he returned to the Coach. From November 1939 to October 1940 he served successively aboard the USS ELLET QDD-3985 and the USS MASON QDD-19'1j as Gunnery Officer and lst Lieutenant. Captain MANDELKORN was then assigned to the USS CALIFORNIA QBB-440. He reported aboard as a Lieutenant fjunior gradej a year prior to Pearl Harbor, and spent the duration of World War II serving as Air Defense Officer and Gunnery Officer of that vessel. The CALIFORNIA participated in various naval engagements during the war including Pearl Harb r th M ' ' ' ' 0 , e arlanas, Leyte Gulf, Lingayen Gulf, Okinawa and Japan. Following World War II Captain MANDELKORN returned to the Naval Academy as head of the Committee of 2 f c Officer Instructors of the Ordnance and Gunnery Department. In July 1949 he assumed Command of USS CORRY QDD 8175, operating in the AtlaHUC and Mediterranean until July 1951. He next served at the Office, Chief of Naval Operat1OHS HS A . . sslstant to the Head of Surface Operations Branch Fleet Operations Followin this in Jul , - S . V 1953 Captain MANDELKORN was transferred to the West Coast to serve as Readiness Officer on the Staff of Comma d C ' - ' ' ' n er ru1sersDestroyers Force, Pacific, until June 1955. In July 1955 Captain MANDELKORN assumed command of Destroyer Division 12 operating in the Pacific, and d ' ' serve there until July 1957 when he attended the Senior Coursfl of the Naval War College. After completing the course at the Naval War College Captain MANDELKORN ' ' was assigned to the Staff of the Naval War College, serving there until assum- ing command of the USS MISSISSINEWA QAO-1445 in July 1959. .Captain.MANDELKORN is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore G. MANDELKORN Of PCOYIH, Illinois. He is married to the former Eugenia MILLER of Annapolis, Maryland, and they have three boys Phili Da 'd h . . - pe V1 , t e oldest is an NROTC student at the University Of Pennsylvania, and 1S presentl t k' ' ' I ' ' y a mg a years leave of absence to study at the University Of Rome.
