JOHN WOODARD, fullback, earned his first letter with the Mustangs. Hampered by an iniury sustained in baseball, John was oil and on the gridiron all season. Short oi stature, John is heavy set and proved his worth early in the season as a hard h1'ting iullhack. ' N -nwM,,,,, b'Mln DOUGLAS DAY, center. ended his high school career as he earned his first let- tei this season. Playing defensive line- backer in the latter part of the season "Doug" was a hard man to outsmart, Be- ing one of the youngest men on the team Douglas has plenty of time to develop into a tirst rate collegiate player. NORRIS HAGGERTON, first year letter- man was one ol the Ponies' bc st reserve hacks. Once in. the secondary "Shorty" was nard to catch. much less tarkle. Shorty will be hack next season to till in at left-halfback tor the Ponies. 'ff in ing., ROBERT HINSHAW earned his first let- ter with the Mustangs. Robert has a style of playing all his own, , MELADE DeGAlSH, under-study to Hoop- er, lettered his first season with the Mus- tangs. Being small, Nlelade was excep- tionally deeeptlve and excelled in ball- hanclling. Next season Melade should prove to be one ol' the better backs in the district. MORRIS HAGGERTON. alternating at the various haekfield positions, earned his first letter with the Mustangs, Moose proved to he an ahle suhstitttte in any haektield position. Being an able Mustang this season Morris has one more season with the Ponies. DOUGLAS CLAYBROOK, first year let- terman, filled in at reserve left half for the Ponies. Getting a slow start. Douglas pieked tip in the latter part of the sea- son and has promise of heing one of the better backs next season. GEORGE STEPHENS reeeived his lirst letter as end this season. The right end po- sition will probably he filled by this promising Mustang next season. BILLY PALMER is a living example ot the fact that size makes no difference on the gridiron. Despite his mere 145 lbs. Billy earned his first letter at reserve guard for the lvliistangs. One of the least men on the team. he was also one of the roughest. Billx' has one more season with the Ponies, ' r ,4 M . fad , A N, 1 M WALTER BUTLER, guard, earned his first and last letter with the Mustangs. Walter was a consistent player. "Coach" played three years for the Ponies and re- ceired a lot of recognition for his never- say-die attitude. Jimmy is expected to be a rugged boy at the same position next season. Members of the 1949 B-squad are, left to right, front row: Charles Wilson, Steve Stephens, Howard Carlton, Clifford Smith, Bud Shaw, and Weldon Browning. EARL MEAC!-IUM, 210-pound first year letterman. is another of the fine prospects for next season's team. Although Earl saw little action this season, he is expected to improve considerably and hold down a regular tackle post next season. Starting the season with only three returning lettermen, Coach Newton molded the boys into a team and began the long hard pull to the district and bi-district championships. In the first round of conference play, the Ponies lost only one game to come out on top. Losing to Abilene again, the Mustangs downed San Angelo, Brownwood, and Big Spring to tie San Angelo for the district title. The district playoffs found Sweetwater a two game winner over San Angelo for the district crown and the right to meet Stephenville in the bi-district playoffs. By winning over the Stephenville team, the Ponies gain- ed the right to enter the state tournaments in Austin. In the first round of play in the tournament the Ponies downed the Texas City five, the defending state champions.
