' I enjoyed the book Very much, and had for a long time had the desire to read it. I don't know if you have ever read the book or any of John Steinbeck's works, but if you have you will know why he is a well liked author. I was very glad to receive the letter you wrote and the support you and a lot of other Americans are giving the service men here in Viet Nam. host of the service men are against the Anti-Viet Nam demonstrations but we also realize that there is always that lot. This will not seem very much like Christmas over here but I would like to say that all the books, candy, cookies and the cards being sent over here has meant a great deal to all of us. All the books that were sent from your neighborhood were received If the Sea Bees of Mobile Construction Battalion Nine of the United tatee Navy and I might say were well appreciated. 'We don't have a lot of time to do any reading but when we do have a little time off a good book or magazine is a good way to pass the time. You said you would like to know a little about me. Well there isn't too much to say. I have been in the Navy since I Was 17 years of age and will he 23 the 18th of January. I am a second class petty officer or pay grade ES. I am a machinest by trade or that is what I do in the Navy. Ky home is in Birmingham, Alabama but haven't been there enough since 1959 to call it home much anymore. I have pretty well traveled around the world since coming into the Wavy, I was in Kew York in the fall of 1961 and enjoyed it very much. There are ten men that sleep in the tent I live in and call homey and some of them are trom up in your part of the country. They asked ma when I wrote if you did answer to tell them about where the town is in which you live. And to tell you and all the people there thanks a lot for the books and to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Well I must close and go to work. Write soon and have a nice holiday season. Thanking you very much, Dan Eranton MR2 AGO English - Speech A humanistic course required of all students, English is both a subject and a discipline. Its values lie in reading literature which reflect the magnificent English and American heritage, in achieving precision and effectiveness of style in writing, and in knowing the grammatical struc- ture of English. To preserve these values inher- ent in the sequential nature of English studies is the goal of the English department who members teach the most challenging and complex of the academic subjects. As such, the purpose of the organization is to provide a forum for student expression and to promote the general welfare of the school. The General Organization believes the welfare of the school lies in the indi- vidual and through its many activities, seeks to reach the stu- dent. The council sponsors pep rallies and Red and White Days to instill school spirit during major sports seasons. It provides away transportation and ticket concessions at the gate. The council seeks to impress upon the student the impor- tance of good citizenship and government. The school elections are completely controlled by the council. Through this event the student receives an insight into political machinery as regular campaigning, party platforms and debates progress. Among its many services are the morning announcements of school news over the PA. system, Parent visitation Night, dress-up day to encourage good grooming and the chartering of clubs. The latter is the most important power of the council by which it coordinates the workings of the various smaller Clubs in the school. This unity is derived through the assignment of charters, thereby making available G.0. judiciary and central treasury. Left to Right WP mud J. Mitchell, T. Palladino, J. Worster, D. Winters, N. The Columbia Scholas- tic Press Association judged the Quadrangle as a First Place Award Winner, one of the few school papers to receive this recognition. In the Annual Kemper In- surance Driving Safety Contest, the Quadrangle won second place and $150 in the national competition for the special safety edition. Held this year on the same evening as was the Spring Concert, the two undertakings served as a fine couplet in the Newfield tradition of support of the arts. At the left is pictured a hobby horse tpop art techniquet which attracted more than a few compliments. As perhaps 80CZ; 0f the first floor was bedecked with examples of student work of some sort or another, each Visitor had quite an insight inte the art program offered here at Newfield.
