Universities in New York are particu- larly vulnerable as other institutions in more pastoral lor at least, more liveable urbani set- tings use the lure of the good life to win away star teachers. The departure of faculty, even at the rate we have seen here, is not a sign of a school in decline. What many peo- ple fail to realize is that those losses are often a reflection of how good N.Y.U.'s fac- ulty is dndlcontinues to be. Indeed, it is a compliment when other institutions seek out our staff. Still, it is unsettling when so many departments must rebuild at once. N.Y.U. will survive, its students will learn.
