THE CRIMSON AND THE BLACK
In the happy time of school days,
In the joy of life's bright morng
When we arm for coming battles,
Where our future hopes are borng
As we struggle up and onward
On the rough and rugged track
We will sing for "Dear Old Dutehtown"
And the Crimson and the Black.
Though we are not great and mighty
In the realms of name and fame,
And thou-gh in the book of glory,
You have never seen our nameg
Though we are not always winners
On the diamond and the track,
Still we sing for "Dear Old Dutchtown
And the Crimson and the Black.
When at last we take our places
For the voyage of our life
And when all our fortunes fail us
When assailed by storm or strife:
When we're threatened with destruction
An-cl we're tempted to turn back
We will think of "Dear Old Dut0htown"
And the Crimson and the Black.
When at last our trip is ended
And we rest, to work no more
And we muse beside the hearthstone
And recall those days of yore
And though other thoughts may hold us
And we turn our memories back
We will still remember "Dutchtown"
And the Crimson and the Black.

J. ROGER HOWE, Superintendent
"Okay, you birds g-et hack there and get busy."
Bluffton College, A. B.
Bowling Green State University, M. E.
Mr. Howe, who came to New Washington in the fall of '53 to assume
the responsibility of superintendent, has fully won the love and respect
of all the students. During this time he has put in many long and tired
hours. Both faculty and pupils have greatly benefitted by his strong
qualities of integrity, leadership, and loyalty. We hope that Dutchtown
High has the pleasure of having Mr. Howe as superintendent for many
years to come.

SEHIOR CLASS l'llSTORll
One sunny morning, the alarm clocks of twenty-five little freshies started us on our
journey through Dutchtown High. After we had found our way around the halls
that seemed too big for us and met our new classmates, we organized our class and
elected our officers: Gene VanOrsdall, president, Margaret Smith, vice-president,
Sylvia Scheer, secretary-treasurer, Roger Sage and Pauline Fisher, student council.
For our class sponsor we chose Mr. Robey. On September 21 we came prepared for
bed and were initiated by the Seniors which officially made us members of D. H. S.
We were then given refreshments andtaken on a hayride to Bucyrus. Many of our
classmates took an active part in sports and music.
We eagerly began our second year by electing our officers-Roger Sage, president,
Bill Heydinger, vice-president, Darlene Ankney, secretary, Helen Wechter, treas-
urer. We chose Miss Dunbar as our class sponsor. Connie Alt was a varsity cheer-
leader. At the beginning of the second semester, Lois and Larry Hosey joined our
class, making our total twenty-seven.

We're now upper classmen, having the title of Juniors. We elected Margaret
Smith as our president: Sylvia Scheer, vice-president, Darlene Ankney, secretary: Lois
Hosey, treasurer. For our class sponsor we chose Mr. Hershberger. We received our
long awaited class rings. We lost two members, Forrest Strohm and Dale Ehresman,
leaving our total twenty-five. Our first big social event of the year was in giving our
class play, "Father Was a Housewife." Tl.e highlight of our Junior year was the Jun-
ior-Senior banquet. For our theme we chose "The Rainbow." After the meal and
program, we had a theater party at Mansfield. Ourjunior year soon came to a close.
We are proudly looking forward to our Senior year. .
And now our last year at D. H. S. at long-last reach the stately title of seniors and
for our last leaders we chose Gene VanOrsdall, presidentg Bill Heydinger, vice-presi-
dentg Sylva Scheer, secretaryg Darlene Ankney, treasurer. We chose Mr. Cole as our
sponsor. Charlotte Pifher joined our class, making a -total of 26. We began making
plans for our first act as Senior, Freshman initiation. The little devil in some of us
showed itself and gave the poor little freshies a rough time. The first attempt in the
year to raise money was in having a paper drive. It netted a tidy sum but oh! such
tired and dirty kids! We had bake sales and car washes during the year. Our Senior
play, "Glamour Boy" was a huge success. We are now busy publishing the Ne-Wa-Hi.
For our motto we chose "Today We Follow, Tomorrow We Lead." Our class colors
are royal blue and white, with blue and white carnations as our flower. We are plan-
ning to take a trip to Washington D. C. and New York. Our Senior year was a won-
derful year spent at Dutchtown High and with anxiety we are awaiting our com-
mencement exercises, never to forget the four wonderful years we spent there.

SENIORS OF 1955
SEHIOR CLASS PRGPHECU
In a dream I had one night in May,
Were all my old classmates, still real gay.
After being separated for a long time,
I dreamed everyone was getting along just fine.
Gene, now the president of our nation,
Is heard over every broadcasting station.
At this rate he is surely on his way
To making his million he dreamed of one day.
As Dutchtown High came into my mind,
With Larry's coaching, the team is doing fine.
Another member of the faculty is Roger Sage.
With all his students in the slide rule stage.
Urbie, the janitor, can't be beat,
For I see he keeps the school so nice and neat.
Charlotte, the secretary of the school,
Sees to it that all kids obey the rule.

,fy Margaret, his bookkeeper, it seems,
X Keeps him worried with all her schemes.
f""' On the world's fastest rocket, designed bv Paul,
I found Lois, the stewardess, taking good care of all.
Mary Faeth and her husband, aboard the rocket ship,
-- Were just returning from their "little" trip.
Four of our classmates. Arlene, Mary Kay, Helen, and Carol
Are all neatly dressed in their nursing apparel.
All ready and willing with their box of pills,
Hoping to cure all aches and ills.
Bill Heydinger with hair so wavy
Is now a Rear Admiral in the Navy.
It seems that when he goes in swimmin'
He's always surrounded by a throng of women!
Neil Heydinger, working at the bubble gum factory.
Tests all gum to see if it is satisfactory.
In the Ritz cracker factory next door,
Is Janice salting crackers to be sent to the store.
Ray, the farmer of our class, it seems
Is trying to invent some new machines.
To better the farm is his aim.
And for this he'll receive much fame.
Bertha, now world famous for her cosmetic demonstration.
Is employed at Higbee's and is Quite a sensation.
Also employed there is Joan. head of the filing department.
Making sure everything goes in the proper compartment.
While dreaming, Darlene came in sight.
And she is doing quite all right.
Now operating her own beauty shop,
Movie stars think she's just tops.
Just where Pauline is employed, is rather hazy in my mind.
But, ah, it's coming through quite clear now, I find.
She's working at the Mutual as a stenographer,
And, of course, she's making sure, things are not all a stir.
As my dream came to a happy ending,
The classmates of '55 were unbending
In their efforts to fortify
The ideals of Dutchtown High.

Class Sponsor - - Mr. Robey
On September 2, 1953, twenty-seven Freshmen began their journey through high
school. The first big thrill they experienced was initiation day. The boys looked
like pin-up girls in skirts and blouses on backwards. The girls wore skirts and jeans
backwards and brought buckets to carry the Seniors' books. The officers for that
year were: President, Charles Nicol, Vice-President, Everett Springer, Secretary,
Mary Jean Kapleg Treasurer, Ruth Bechtel: and Class Sponsor, Mr. Cummins. In No-
vember the class had a skating party. A few of the boys have athletic ability. Ever-
ett Springer is on the baseball team, and our reserve basketball boys are: Charles
Nicol, Everett Springer, and Joe Snipes. This class gained a new member, Bill Snyder.
The following year, the officers elected were: President, Everett Springeri Vice-
President, Donald Studer, Secretary, Marlene Shealyg Treasurer, Bonnie Ulmer, and
Class Sponsor, Mr. John Cole. There are some new members on the baseball and bas-
ketball teams this year. Donald Studer, August Stacklin, John Hertzer and Joe
Snipes have made the reserve basketball team. Everett Springer, August Stacklin,
and Donald Studer are now on the baseball team. Everett Springer is also on the var-
sity team. This class had three energetic cheerleaders that year who were: Mary
Jean Kaple, Ruth Bechtel, and Bonnie Ulmer. The Sophomores sponsored a dance
this year and a Lenten assembly.
The Juniors are already making plans for the Junior-Senior banquet which they
have been looking forward to. The class play they have selected is entitled "Take
Your Medicine." Bonnie Ulmer is again doing a good job of cheerleading this year.
Bob Fry is also doing a good job as manager. On the varsity team this year we have
Everett Springer, Joe Snipes, Donald Studer, and Charles Nicol. The Juniors wel-
comed two new members into their class, Janice Niedermier and Donald Alt.

Treasurer - Clem Kanney
Class Sponsor - - Mr. Hershberger
In September of 1953, the students of St. Bernard's and the North Auburn schools
combined with the students of the public school to make up the Freshman Class of
New Washington High School with a total of 37. The class was organized as fol-
lows: President, Herbert Caudillg Vice President Marlene Hoseyg Secretary, Ruth
Ecksteing Treasurer, Dolores Mason. They chose Mr. Cummins as their Class Spon-
sor. Their first big event came when they had to dress in long underwear worn
backwards for their initiation. After the initiation in the evening, the Freshmen were
honored at a dance given by the Seniors.
Being athletic wise, they fared well with Pau-l Fike, Russell Ehrman, Herbert Cal.
dill, and Allen Heydinger. Paul Fike was also on the varsity team during the second
semester.
The following year, the class started with thirty-two members, but the membership
dropped to thirty-one as Herbie Caudill transferred to Plymouth High School. An ex-
citing event of the year was the selection of class rings. '
Paul Fike, Russell Ehrman, and Allen Heydinger were again on the basketball
team. During the year the Sophomore Class sponsored a bake sale.
So far the class of 1957 seems to be very ambitious and prosperous. Keep it up,
kids!

FRESHIHAU CLASS HISTORU
President - - Linda Alt
Vice-President - James Kehres
Secretary - - Kenneth Niedermier
Class Sponsor - Mrs. Lininger
September 7, 1954, found twenty-eight little freshmen here at Dutchtown High
shaking in their boots and not knowing which room to go into next. But they soon
became accustomed to this vast building, and settled down to study.
First came initiation. Ahhh! What a day! Our little freshies came dressed in
bathing suits, with burlap sacks as beach coats, and hip boots. The Seniors ran them
through the showers and made them perform various stunts, but then to be nice, they
treated them to a square dance.
Boys in the Freshman Class having athletic ability are: Bobby Studer, Chuck Evans,
Bill Kaple, and Gary Gardner. Diane Fike supported the team by being a cheer-
leader. .
We, the class of '58, had a riotous Freshman year.

BASKETBALL
The basketball team had one of the best records any county school has had for
years. The team won 22 games in a row before their downfall in the tournament.
The team was ranked 11th best out of 748 Class B schools in the state. Included ir.
the team's many conquests was the winning of the Sycamore Tournament and the
County League Trophy. The team also received the Good Sportsmanship Trophy at
the end of the year. Much of the credit for New Washington's great season is due to
the fine coaching of Frank Robey. The reserve team also had a fine season, winning
16 ot' 19 games and tying for second in the county.

COACH: Mr. Robey.
MANAGERS: Wilbur Green, Bob Fry.

BILL CLELAND: Probably the greatest scorer New Washington has produced. Pos-
sessed fine spirit and speed, and was chosen "All-County" two consecutive years.
Also made Toledo Blade Area first team.
BILL HEYDINGER: A very steady, dependable type of ball player. Great fighting
spirit and determinaiton. A "coach's player" in that he never gave up.
GENE VanORSDAL-L: Fierce competitor, great shot, good ball handler, and a sound
defensive man. Was selected to "All-County" second team and Toledo Blade
Area first team.
PAUL YANKA: Tremendous rebounder and possessed a fine left-handed shot. What
he lacked in height he made up for by effort and desire.
PAUL FIKE: Only a Sophomore-he can go on to great things if work and determina-
tion mean anything. A good shot outside and strong defensively.
STEVE YOSICK: Here is a boy whose only misfortune was being a senior at the
