The mood this year is quiet and peaceful. 'll think there is a different mood this year. l'm one who regrets the passing of the protest. At least there was life . . . and caring. Students aren't making any kind of disturbance-in any way-responsibility program or not. ll This year is the first year I've seen a pronounced change in a year. There is a greater uncertainty about important values. l'Kids seem more relaxed and healthily casual. They seem less concerned with grades and more ready to work when they come to class. 'There is much more hostility and nastiness than there used to beg it's much harder to teach. Still, the majority of the kids are pretty cooperative. The greatest problem with students is that they don't have any self-confidence as humans, as initiatorsg they don't have a sense of how wonderful they are, how powerful.

Teachers are another group whose philosophies, attitudes, and reactions are as different as the individuals who comprise that segment of New Trier society. 9-mvaallvt The teacher should be a guide, showing students where to fish, but not doing their fishing for them. I try to create a situation where a student finds it irresistible to learn. Will my lesson plan be interesting and meaningful? Are the ideas in the literature challenging yet under- standable? I try to find a balance between thinking and experiencing or doing. I try to create an atmosphere that will allow all indi- viduals in the class to encounter one another on a very human level. 'Il try to explain what students are trying to learn, the purpose behind it, and I try to explain it in a lucid style. How do I teach? Preview, preview, hit 'em with it, review.
