ACADEMICS ' day in the life' Students translate Miss Egnot's verbal English to written Russian. 1 Wehhl 3 We often forget that there is more to school than tardy slips, pink slips, ditch slips, green slips, white cards, re- entrance permits, parking permits, and early dismissal permits. There is even more to it than PSAT's, SAT's, achievement tests, May exams, college board exams. ACT's, NMSQT's, and NROTC's. Swamped by these, as well as by other pressures like grades, it is easy to see why students sometimes forget that school is for learning. The New Trier student's day begins with adviser period. The blurry-eyed and wide-awake listen to the daily bulle- tin. deny ditching, and watch with apprehension as the number of tardy slips mounts. An adviser consoles and encourages his advisees as they struggle to survive four years of high school. Adviser period can be an important and necessary part of the day, though more often it serves as a good place to sleep. finish homework, or exchange gossip. New Trier students either live for or drag through 40 minutes of English, math. science, foreign languages. history, and so on. Occasionally, a student discovers a release from the daily routine by molding clay, designing houses, putting engines together, or painting a scene. New Trier students are offered such a variety of interesting courses that some even sacrifice lunch to further their educational backgrounds. For freshmen and sophomores, study halls fill in the spaces where there are no classes. The year 1969-70 saw great changes in the way free time was used. Juniors. liberated from study halls. were granted the same freedom as seniors. The juniors were allowed to study individually or in groups, talk among themselves, or use the junior lounge. As another day. another week, and finally, another year passes, each student finds himself wondering where the time has gone. With the many opportunities offered to him, the year could and should have been a meaningful and productive one.
