A neu' hoard position was crezttetl by the nddition of Il eo-head of Unity and Spirit. These eo-heads provided n lini- son between Pep Club, Council, and the students. Unity was needed, not only within the school, hut between the lfast and Vilest campuses as well. This attempt for unity was achieved by passing the East-lVest Unity hill. This bill provided for jnint meetings of the student cabinets of both schools once :i month. Student Council achieved the goals it attempted. It made the students :nvnre of their responsibilities to the school, and more itnportztnt, to themselves. The hoard has hecome more vitally involved in Council nflnirs by enlarging their com- mittees :tnd stuffs, thus enabling closer contnrt with the en- tire student body. The vitality :ind initiative shown by the neu' officers and board during their first semester in udice prophesied the merit of the ideas to come in the future. Wlilllam Bronner Wlilliam McLucas President Vice-President Carol Esher Susan Graham Secretary Treasurer THE TWAIN SHALL MEET THE COUNCILS DECIDED TO REMAIN AUTONOMOUSK BUT THEY DID PLAN TO WORK TOGETHER ON A COOPERATIVE PROJECT SEMESTERLY A year of decision, a year of division. So Council, as all the other organizations, was faced with the problem of instituting a counterpart in the new school. But equally as important was curbing Certain problems on the east campus. VVltile searching for solutions for these problems, Student Council initiated new programs for the student's benefit. One of the most important problems which required im- mediate attention was the first period situation. Over- crowded conditions made it impossible for all the students without a Iirst period class to meet in the halls or first Hoor rotunda. Council provided a solution which was not to be interpreted as a disciplinary action, but as a service to the students. The lunch hall was opened and provided a place for students to talk and eat breakfast. Study halls were supervised, and provided students with a place to study if they so wished. The Head of First Period Hirst semesterl, and the Head of Recreation were the general supervisors for all the first period operations. The inability of a few students to accept the responsi- bilities that go along with the privileges of self-government has been a constant problem to council-regulated operations. Frequent disturbances in various study halls, and infrequent but serious riots in the lunch hall eventually caused a meet- ing to be called of the heads of all the major organizations. Pete Rossiter presided at the meeting, which was not in- tended to find a solution to these problems, but merely to bring them out into the open. Student Teaching lVeek was initiated by Bill Brunner and Lexi Panos, and aiiorded interested students an oppor- tunity to teach a class. This program was VCl'y successful, and achieved its purpose in that students were able to gain teaching experience.
