School Hlstory The New Po1nt School 15 not as old as the towT1sh1p for lt was organlzed 1n 1836 Th1S townshlp was to be called Saltcreek ln 1854 the town of New Pomt was la1d out along the sxte of the N Y Central rallroad from C1nc1nnat1 to lndlanapolls Wlth the town growlng rapldly the need of a school was sc en To me et thls neccssrty a Log School known as The Cook School was bu1lt near the present farm of Tom Tellas James Moody the flrst trustee was elected ln 1859 and comblned h1s efforts wrth those ofthe Masomc Lodge to construct a two story br1ck bu1ld1ng 1n 1861 Th1s was used two fold as a lodge hall and schoolhouse The bu11d1ng st1l1 stands and 15 used by the Masomc Lodge ln 1880 the school populat1on of the townshlp was 375 and the school term was a full n1ne months A new school whlch cost 2200 was bu11t IH the west end of town on the present W1lhdm 1-lermesch property The school a two story brxck was bullt w1th a large room up and a large room down The enrollment grew and a part1t1on was placed 1n the lower room to make three rooms Th1s was a grade school ln whmch some h1gh school courses were offered The f1rst pr1nc1pa1 before B111 Jenklns was W M Gard Other prlnclpals Thls school was a town school dlrected by a town board Dr Lodaw1cke Jerman Dr Henry Johnston and John Lew1s I-11l11ard A lack of funds soon caused the school to revert to the townshlp w1th John Huff as trustee John A Meyer was elected trustee ln 1908 and 1n 1909 after much controxersey a new bu11d1ng was to be bu11t So that the burldmg program could be started the school term was shortened to s1x months The old bu11d1ng was torn down and the br1cks re-cla1med for use 1n the new bulldlng The bulldlng conslsted of four rooms and a basement cost S12 000 lt was to offer grade school and three years of h1gh school but crowded con d1t1ons forced the f1rst two grades to the Old Schoolhouse lt 1S sard that the contractor lost money on the bu1ld1ng and also that h went to sleep 1n the llvery barn wh11e he was smok1ng causmg a fxre wh1ch burned the barn a drug store and Metz's store '1'h1s n1ght 1S st1l1 called the nlght of the Blg F1re In 1915 Fred Bass became prmcrpal At th1s t1me pup11s w1sh1ng to complete hxgh school commuted by tra1n to exther Greensburg or Batesvllle paylng thelr own trans portatlon The present bu11d1ng was completed by the fall of 1922 wrth Adam E Huber trustee and Cl1fford Zetterburg as prlnclpal In 1939 James Clements became pr1nc1pa1 and 1n 1951 George Ray of V1ncennes assumed the dutxes of pr1nc1pal and IS st11l 1n that capaclty Cont1nued on page 3 O 5 . 3 ' 1 ' ll II, ll 4 H - Y f. were John Bobbitt, Frank Fields, Dennis O'Dea and Edward Moulton. ' .- 35 :A X-.+- XX- Ag ff 1.1 -, nf q XX,X. :Q lf! f ff 5 411 igkx ll 'Gr .T , l George Ray Miss Hall graduated from Indiana University and taught in Bruceville Bloomington Windfall and Sharpsville before coming to New Point School in 1939 She teaches Mathematics and Typing In addition to this she is the Senior class Beacon and Sunshine sponsor Miss Hall is also our school treasurer Joseph Gwxnnup 'ff' Our principal, Mr. George Ray came to New Point School in the year of 1951. Mr. Ray graduated from high school in Eng- lish, Indiana. He holds a B.S. degree and a M. S. degree in Education from Indiana State Teachers College, and an L. L. B. degree from La Salle Extension University. He also attended Purdue, Butler, and Indiana Universities. Mr. Ray has held teaching positions at Remington, Marocco, Crawfordsville, Richmond, and Hammond, administrative po- sitions in Dubois, Posey, Jasper, and Decatur Counties, and in Illinois, Mr. Ray has also been Dean of Men and Professor of Education and Social Studies at Vincinnes University. In addition to his administrative duties here Mr. Ray teaches English History Geometry Psychology and Government We are very proud of the things Mr Ray has done to improve our school and to make it a very successful school Mr Ray has also attended the University of Denver at which institution he expects to complete the work for the Doctor of Education degree in 1955 Juanita Hall Mr Gwinnup was discharged from the army in December of 1953 and decided to come to New Point this year to teach He graduated from New Salem High School in 1947 and went to Franklin College to graduate with an A B Degree in 1951 He is teaching history health and is our boys physical education teacher Mr Gwinnup is the Junior sponsor and also sponsor of our Annual 6 1 1 r 1 9 ' Y I r ' 1 9 " - Q . She graduated from high school at Rome City, lndiana. She attended Purdue and Indiana Universities, graduating from the latter ' with a B, S, degree, and has done graduate work at Purdue. Mrs. Witsaman teaches physical education and English. She is V , . A, also the Sophomore sponsor. Mary Alice W tsaman 'W Mrs Sherfey holds degrees from De Pauw University and Jordan College of Ixlusic She taught at Bainbridge Moores ville Greenwood Waldron Milroy and Jackson Township in Indiana and at Kingston South Carolina before coming in 1951 to New Point She teaches music and art Garnett She fey continued from page 3 Since 1922 over 425 students have graduated from New Point I-ligh School and entered many fields of endeaw or Plans were made to add a cafeteria elass rooms and to enlarge and better equip all the trustee and his advisory board Early in 1953 plans were presented to the building committee for their approval After much studying and debate the plans were accepted and the go signal was given The new addition was built at a cost not to exceed S50 O00 The contract was awarded to William Westpezer of Batesville Work continued during the winter and summer but not until November of 1954 was the building ready for use We were able to use the new Commercial department and the Homemaking department Equipment was slow in arriving and State inspection of the cafeteria caused its delay Our cafeteria has some of the finest equipment that can be obtained The lunches are prepared byMrs Agnes Durbin and Mrs Louice Thackery lt is served by the high school girls with the help of our cooks A girls organization known as the Sunshine Society 1S very active in the school Through their efforts they have made it possible for the school to have many fine pieces of equipment Athletics play a very prominent place in our school Organized teams in the Senior High and Junior High represent the school in basketball softball and volleyball 8 f fa x ei' A' x y g W D xt . ly ' ' l . , i I' ' ' ' .
