The members of the track team were very successful throughout the course of the season to establish themselves places in the Yankee and Nutmeg E.C.C. meets. Heading the boy's track team to victories in the Yankee E.C.C. meet were Mike Gomez, who placed first in the 100 meter run and second in the 200 meter run and Shannon Dalton, who placed first in the Dis- cus Competition and third in the Shot Put Competi- tion. Others that placed in the Yankee meet were Greg Ikens, Sergio Yanez, the 4 " 100 and 4 " 400 Relay Teams. In the Nutmeg E.C.C. meet the first place victories were taken by Gomez in the 100 and 200 Meter Runs, Dalton in the Discus Competition and the 4 " 100 Relay Team consisting of Jaleel Shujuth, Soilo Arroyo, Guillermo Lopez, and Mike Gomez. The other team members that participated that day each placed in at least one event. Those members were Rich Robledo, Rich McEvoy, Sergio Yanez, Greg Ikens, and the 4 "' 400 Relay Team. Qualifying for the Class M State Meet were Mike Gomez, Rich Robledo, Rich McEvoy, Greg lkens, Shannon Dalton, and the 4 " 100 and 4 " 400 Relay Teams. Mike Gomez was the only one who qualified for the State Open in the 100 and 200 meter runs. He placed second in the State Open in the 200. Some of the members of the team participated in a special track meet held in Manchester that sent Go- mez, Shujuth, and Yanez to the Semi-finals for the junior Olympics in Maine. Overall the boy's track team did exceptionally well and we are looking forward to seeing the track team continue their success in 1988, especially now that they have a new track to practice on. A JALEEL SHUJATH FRED MCMULLEN Girl's Track Even though the 1987 Girl's Track Team ended their season with a 2-9 record, individually the team mem- bers showed constant improvement in their perfor- mances. The Girl's Track Team, coached by Larry Croxton and Marcia Crouch, performed well in the Yankee and Nutmeg E.C.C. meets. Leading the Girl's Team to victories in the Yankee meet was Natalie Glover who took first place in the 110 hurdles and second place in the 300 hurdles. Other team members who placed in the meet were Keisha Gathers, Dawne Gittens, Lawanna Green, the 4x400 relay team and the 4x100 relay team consisted of Kei- sha Gathers, Tracey Franklin, Natalie Glover, and Lawanna Green. In the Nutmeg E.C.C. meet none of the girls placed Q an E first in an event, but did well in each of their individ- ual events. The team members that placed were the same as in the Yankee meet with the exception of Roxanna Walker, who placed third in the discus com- petition. Qualifying for the Class M State Meet were Walker, Glover, Gittens, and the 4x100 relay team. Returning for the 1988 season will be Seniors: Nat- alie Glover, Heidi Theroux, Dawne Gittens, Cathy Ro- driguez, and Shelly Dudley. Juniors: Keisha Gathers, Netty Maysonet, Tracey Franklin, and Lawanna Green. Sophomore: Trilby Rabitaille. We are hoping to see some new additions to the track team to go with our brand new track. We also wish the Girl's Track Team lots of luck and improve- ment in their 1988 season. f- A Bottom row L to R, Coach Larry Croxton, Roxanna Walker, Dena Gittens, Dawn Daniels, Tracey Franklin, Dawne Gittens, Nannette Maysonet, Cathy Rodriguez, Tawana fmanagerj Bottom row L to R, Alana Seymor, Keisha Gathers, Tomika Lee, Katie Hanrahan, icaptainj Lee Malave, Heidi Theroux, Trilby Rabitaille, Shelly Dudley, missing-Natalie Glover w .f . we fb! They suffered their first defeat in the annual Whaling City Festival Tournament to Plainfield 8-6, but stormed back in the consolation game thumping Windham, 14- 1. They continued their march with 11 consecutive wins before falling to Killingly 8-6. The ECC race boiled down to the final game of the season versus Waterford, a team they defeated earlier 8-7. Co-Captain Bob Nenna hurled a four hitter, strik- ing out six, while the other Co-Captain, Brian Mercado put the Whalers ahead early as he singled home Steve Keefe from second base for a Whaler lead. In the fourth inning, Nenna reached on an error, stole second and came home with the eventual winning run on Bob Standeford's single. The Lancers scored once in the fifth but Nenna and the Whaler defense led by Dan Ferreira held Waterford and game the NLI-IS team the ECC crown in the Yankee and Nutmeg divisions. The Whalers ended the regular season at 17-3, and were 14-2 in the ECC. Mercado, Nenna, and Keefe led the pitching staffs with records of 6-1, 7-0, and 4-0 respectively. Offensively Mercado 1.4045 and Nenna 1.3383 paced the Whalers with Ferreira at 813, Standeford, .380 and Ken Pia .310. Also contributing were starters Casey O'Neill at 2nd base, Todd Meadows, a freshman an- chored 3b, Mark Nasser DH'd and played first, George Rivera, first base and DH, and Jamal Johnson, out- field. With the ECC title in hand the Whalers turned to their second season, the Class M tournament. In the opening round the Whalers and Suffield were tied 1-1 going in the bottom of the seventh. Keefe had a four-hitter going, but the Whalers were down to their last out when Santangelo blasted a two-strike pitch over the right field fence for a 2-1 victory. On to the quarter finals versus Johnathan Law, Nenna and the Whalers took a quick 4-1 lead in the first inning as they slammed the Lawmen 11-3 on an 11 hit attack with Pia's three RBl's paving the way. The Whalers moved another step closer to the cham- pionship game as they met Tolland in the semi-finals at Eastern Connecticut. Mercado took charge on the mound pitching a two-hitter, striking out 11 as the Whalers shut out Tolland 15-0. Nenna and Standeford accounted for five RBl's, and Keefe pounded out four hits. It was championship time again, the fifth time in the past nine years that Coach Varjas has taken his team to the finals, winning in 1978 and finishing sec- ond the past two years. Berlin was the opponent and they jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Whalers opened things up in the fourth when Meadows lined a solo homerun and then Mercado knocked in two runs with a bases loaded single and the Whaler infield anchored by Ferreira and O'Neill stopped the Berlin attack for a 5-2 win and the second Class M title for the Whalers since 1978. Named to the All-State Class M team was Mercado. Receiving ECC All-Star honors were Mercado, Nenna and Ferreira. Mecado was also named New England Amateur baseball player of the year. . .. -.ff -.sw -r, .5 If 't"8"'r'v't'f"3i9'3"f'5"li""-Li'i"'.... A major factor in the season was the pitching staff anchored by Walter Hyslop, Kevin Lynch, Robert Kane and David Biltcliffe. Offensively, Biltcliffe and Lou Mallet paced the young whalers with 14 and 15 RBI's respectively. jerry Cardona had a strong second half and ended with an average of .556. Lynch led the offense with 22 hits for the season, while homeruns were clubbed by I-Iyslop, Mallet 121, Norberto Torres 121, Biltcliffe 121 and Kane. Other members who contributed to a winning sea- son were Augustine Rogers, Jose Nieves, Robert Ste- vens, Edward Lugo, Shelton Saunders, Steven Pas- qualini, and Leo Clinton. ,., to ,y ,,,,is . 1 2 may ' 'f- , v ' N "1 in W A - s . - H sw -W -5- - Freshmen l'M READY. c-JI TODD EUKEL SCORES WATERFORD Softball Varsity The girls softball team had a rocky season last year compiling an 8-12 record. A number of those games were tough losses due to the fact they were decided in the last inning. Despite this they had tremendous leadership from tri-cap- tainsg pitcher Michell Hammel, shortstop Dzung Nguyen, and right fielder Dawn Strickland. Mi- chell I-Iammel along with catcher Lisa Uguccioni were both named to the all Eastern Connecticut Conference Team. The team was guided in their efforts by coach Buonocore. He looks forward to a more successful year next year with many play- ers returning. The majority of the team was made up of underclassmen so hopefully their exper- ience last year will help them to a winning sea- son this year. , . , . . They qualified for the third time in the past five years for the CIAC State championship game, which they won outright in 1983 and were runners-up in 1984. To reach the success they did the Whalers put together a team effort led by Co-captains Josh Martin, Ken Pia, Shannon Cox, and Todd Fine. The de- fense completely shut down the oppo- nents and it wasn't until the Thanks- giving Day game at Fitch, that the Fal- cons were the first team all year to take a lead in A game versus the Whalers. The Whalers came back strong in the second half to take a 28- 13 victory. The game also marked the first time a local high school game in the area was televised live. The offense was led by the running of All Stater Jamal Johnson who scored a record 18 touchdowns for the year. James Smith added strength up the middle with his punishing runs and Captains Fine and Mike Gomez headlined the kick return team and also anchored the secondary on de- fense. Kevin Lynch ran the team from the quarterback slot. When all was said and one, it was the defense which buoyed the Whalers and threw an anchor around the opponents offense. Fine, Gomez, Courtland Hall, Lavern Green, Pia, Ed Samul, Cox, Jason Appleby, Julio Nieves, Ed Guilbert, Derrick and Mi- chael Lancaster, Rich McEvoy, Mar- tin, Fred McMullen, John Singleton, john Collins and Renaud Parker, played both ways in many games and their talents kept the opponents under wraps. On paper, the highly touted and ranked Char- gers had the game in the "bag", but the Whalers took it to them early and stunned the Ansonia backers as they took an early 14-7 lead before a crowd of 3,000. The Chargers scored a tying TD with eight seconds left in the first half and then went up by two TD's in the second half, only to see the Whalers come storming back on a spectacular run by Johnson and a long Lynch to Fine TD pass. The Green and Gold came up one point short, however, as Ansonia held on for a 2.8- 27 decision. For their outstanding efforts John- son, Smith, Fine, Martin, Appleby, Green, and Guilbert were to the All ECC team. Johnson was named to the All-State Team by the New Haven Register. Coach Craig Parker, Todd Fine, Head Coach Ralph Roggero Whaler Team "The Best" The 1987-88 New London High School basketball team enjoyed one of the finer seasons seen in this area for many years. Under the guidance of Coach Ralph Roggero, the Whalers compiled a regular season record of 17-3, won both the Nutmeg and Yankee divisions of the Eastern Connecticut Confer- ence, and were touted locally as a leading contender for the state class M championship. In addition, the team was ranked among the top ten class M schools in the state poll for the entire season. Contributions by newcomers Jamal Johnson and Gerry Lancaster, as well as freshman Michael Lancaster added to the already seasoned veterans tri-captains Todd Fine, Bob Nenna, and Shannon Cox to form the nucleus of this fine team. Major roles played by Walter I-lyslop and Leo Clinton rounded out the reasons that this team met with so much success. 0 K, Q, X Alt. 1 5-nu' asp-dl ful ,I 1491 l ing p .--4--4 2' 2 fn Tri. Capts.
