New London eleven shows good progress under new coach
GEORGE GIERHART rolls out to pass in the East Hartford game,
The 1966 Whaler football team adjusted
well to the tactics of new head coach Robert
Weiss and showed steady improvement through-
out the season. Their final record of 2-6-1 does
not fully indicate the ability of the squad. Fine
performances were consistently turned in by
sophomore quarterback john Brennan and
backs jimmy jones and Ernie Douglas.
New London opened the season away against
the Waterford Lancers. The game was a close
match all the way, with Waterford finally
triumphing 22-20. It was a heart-breaking loss
for the Whalers as a winning touchdown pass
from Bennan to jones in the final minute was
nullified by an illegal motion penalty.
The next game saw the Green and Gold
crushed 52-6 by the top-rated Golden Hurri-
canes of New Britain. The following week the
New London eleven began their home season
against local rival St. Bernards. It was a rare
defensive match, with the score deadlocked at
12-12 halfway through the final period. In the
closing minutes Vito Fatone caught a Saint's
. fumble and raced across the line to give NLHS
its first win.

Spirited squads cheer Whalers to victory, enliven games
Spectators grew tense as N FA scored another
touchdown. Breathlessly, the crowd wondered
if the opponents would win two extra points.
Then suddenly the Cheerleaders piled onto the
field to cheer the Whalers to victory!
The girls in the Pep Squad and Cheerleaders
strive with all their energy to increase school
spirit. By cheering at all football and basketball
games, they show the team support which en-
courages athletes to greater effort. This year the
girls also held the St. Bernards rally in the cafe-
teria patio, and several "Beat Fitchi' rallies be-
fore school. At the Norwich Rally they intro-
duced several new songs and cheers.
The precise formations of the Baton Club
at rallies, games and parades provide-a pleasant
sight for the spectators. Members of the club
must exhibit rhythm, poise, and marching abili-
ty, and maintain a high average. One of the
main events of the year is the Spaghetti Supper,
at which new members are initiated and leaders
for the year announced. The Whalerettes also
perform in the Variety Show. The girls finish
their duties at the Spring Banquet, the Baton
Club's final social event of the year.
THE BATON CLUB led by majorette Elody johnson entertains during half
time at the annual Fitch-NLHS Thanksgiving day football game.
