THE BULKELEY ANNUAL 1922 Our New Headmaster L UNDERWOOD was born July 9, 1878, in Washington, Pennsylvania. He entered Washington and Jefferson College in 1895. Having graduated with honors in 1899, he spent the following year at Yale University in graduate work for a Master of Arts degree. Two more years were spent at Yale and Columbia, to be followed by a trip abroad, where he visited the various educational centers in England, France and Italy, storing up knowledge of foreign peoples and their customs. On h is return from Europe, Mr. Underwood wras appointed Principal of the model high school in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, where he remained six years, leaving at the end of that period to become Head of the English Department at the B. M. C. Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts. After three years of valuable service at that school, seven years were spent in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and at Passaic, New Jersey, in turn, where he reorganized and placed on firm bases the English Departments of the schools. From 1918 until the time of his coming to Bulkeley, Mr. Underwood made an enviable reputation as Head of the English Department at the Newton Classical High School in Newton, Massachusetts, one of the finest schools in America. Mr. Underwood has attained considerable recognition throughout the country for his literary ability. Besides having contributed frequently to such periodicals as The Journal of Education and the Journal of Modern Language Association, he has edited several books used in English courses in high schools, among them being The Sir Roger de Coverley Papers, published by The American Book Company; Macaulay's Life of Samuel Johnson and Selections from Johnson s Writings, published by The Charles E. Merrill Company. While in New Jersey, he w'as editor of The Leaflet, published by the Association of Teachers in that state. (4)
