In that tlme Jersey Clty State College has seen and been affected by many changes, some mlnor but more often of major Importance. The college together with its students has over the years been through no less than four wars. It has grown from one bulld- ing to an ever growlng complex of nlne. It has felt the effects of a clty growing up around lt and has changed to accomodate the Increasing needs of the clty. It has been surrounded by dlsruptlon, both internal and external and has weathered the storms. Jersey Clty State College and Its students have survlved 50 years of prejudices, financial worries and communlty confllcts. We have passed through the varlous stages of conservatlon, radlcallsm and llberallsm and emerged as a better school for those ex- perlences. Today In 1977 we can be proud of our alma mater for its staunch defense of educatlon through varlous crisis and look to the contlnuance of higher Iearnlng In the traditions of the past. Harry Moore nd the Legislature to move ahead with their lans to open the New Jersey State Normal school at Jersey City. On September 12, 1929 the College opened iith an initial enrollment of 386 - 382 women nd four Q41 men. January 1930 marked the first ommencement of 18 women transfer students 'om the Normal Schools at Newark and flontclair. This year our enrollment totals almost ,000 full-and part-time students, and the raduating class of 1977 numbers approximate- f 1,500. From an annual budget of S500,000 and a acuity of 26 in 1929, we have grown to a faculty f more than 300 and an annual budget of over fteen million dollars. This remarkable growth id not come about without some growing ains. iAs l review the histories of my eight 485 redecessors from Dr. William Allen Messier, ie first principal of the Normal School in 1929, J Dr. James H. Mullen, who served as President from 1968 to 1973, l find that in each of their tenures in office the College faced crises both political and financial. ln every case the College was able to overcome its problems and to move on to continued growth and development. During the difficult economic times of the 1930's, and throughout the slow growth period of the 1940's and early 1950's when the future of the College was in grave doubt, some gave in to despair. And, in the 1960's and 1970's when colleges and their curricula experienced a revolution of sorts and the support for higher education again came into question, new fears arose about our future. Our history teaches us that we have always triumphed over temporary set-backs, and that our longest and most successful era lies before us and not in the past. I am confident in our future because I am con- fident in you, our students, for I know you will continue to make Jersey City State College a place where, as the CoIlege's motto lneamus ad discendum exeamus ad meredum proclaims, thousands have entered to learn and departed to bring the fruits of their education to a world where their wisdom, skills, and compassion is and has been anxiously awaited. Henry Massey was named head coach of the Gothics and following the predictions of win, the young Gothics were victorious against Providence in the opening game. However, this was to be the only win in a 1-8-0 season. Injuries and illness also occurred throughout the season and made a dismal season 'even gloomier.' The low point of the year came when Jersey City State's former coach Stephans brought his squad from William Paterson College to defeat the Gothics. In the hands of Coach Massey rest Jersey City's hopes and visions of regaining winning form during the '77 season. Good luck to the Gothics next year!
