The battleship battle group is particularly well suited for establishing and maintaining a naval presence. The battle groupis broad range of offensive capabilities, from long-range Tomahawk strikes to accurate, sustained naval gun shore bom- bardment of Third World military targets, gives it high deter- rent value. The BBBG can be deployed to directly balance, counter, and offset Soviet naval deployments, to provide a pres- ence in areas where U. S. naval forces have not traditionally deployed, and to participate in operations with allies and other friendly nation navies. The BBBG should be used to introduce an element of unpredictability in our forward deployment pat- terns. Its substitution for Carrier Battle Groups on a case-by- A seaman mans the rail. New Jersey fires a broadside. case basis can help reduce the operating tempo of aircraft carriers and make them available for other operations. A Ma- rine amphibious force has often been the option of choice for providing a U. S. presence in Third World areas of political and military instability. Employed together, a BBBG and a Marine amphibious force can provide a highly credible U. S. response to such splinter war situations. The battleship itself is visually impressive and has an unquantifiable umystiquew which enhances its deterrent value. A battle group formed around a battleship can be a tangible symbol of U. S. maritime supremacy. Modern Dreadnought
