This equipment ranges from the boilers and main engines to the light over your bunk or the soda dispenser on the messline. If your equipment runs on electricity, we provide power. lf you are thirsty, we provide water, and if you are hot we provide air conditioning. We make sure the toilets flush and that parts can be fabricated or repaired onboard. New Jersey is protected from fire and flooding 24 hours a day underway by the 'iflying squadn. The primary responsibility of the Engineering Department is to provide propulsion. When New Jersey is required to provide a firepower demonstration in Korea or national presence in the waters of Australia, the men of Engineering will get you there. The heart and soul of the Engineering Department is not equipment and machines, it is the 440 officers and men who keep things running. First on and last off, the engineers were on watch 24 hours a day every day of the deployment making sure that the city known as USS New Jersey was up and running. Machinist's Mates, Boiler Technicians, Hull Technicians, Damage Controlmen, Machinery Repairmen, Electricians, Interior Communication Electricians, and Enginemen made it happen and had the time of their lives.
