Gunner's Mate Master Chief CSur- face Warfarei Wally Denman, a na- tive of Miami, Florida, became Com- l mand Master Chief aboard the battle- ship August 8, 1987. When 'he enlisted 25 years ago there wasn't a recruiter's office in Beaverton, Oregon. Instead, the re- cruiter would visit the post office on Wednesdays. He graded Denman's entrance exam in the back seat of his car, handed it back over the front seat and told him he passed. Since then I've never looked back, the Master Chief said. His sea commands include USS Benjamin Stoddard KDDG 221, USS Brister QDER 3275, USS Dixies QAD 145, USS Samuel Gompers QAD 375, USS Kalamazoo QAOR 61, USS Racine KLST 11917 and USS Camden KAOE 2l. Ashore he has served at Naval Weapons Station, Rota, Spain, River Patrol Division 573, Vietnam, at the Naval Recruiting District in Portland and Recruiting Station in Beaverton, Oregon Knot the post officel, and at Na- val Station Subic Bay in the Re- public of the Philippines. Prior to reporting aboard USS New Jersey, he was assigned to the Naval Submarine Base at Ban- gor, Washington. He plans to re- tire after this tour to spend more time sailing. Personal decorations and awards include the Navy Com- mendation Medal with Combat V,', the Navy Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Rib- bon, the Navy Unit Commenda- tiohn, Battle Efficiency Ribbon, A five Good Conduct Medals and other expeditionary and cam- paign medals. Master Chief Denman is married to the former Linda Nicely of Carson, California. He has three children, Stacy, Brett and Adam. Take care of a man's family, and he'll take care of the Navy, is a quote he is noted for.
