Many readers ask: Why this name? We would like to pause briefly to clarify our continued use of this name. The term it- self is derived from the Latin word Leo, meaning lion. Be- cause custom has given us the king of the jungle as the crowning symbol of our school seal, so it also accounts for the annual name of our yearbook publication. Our aim in publishing the 1950 Leoninus has been to il- luminate the pathway of high school life, to publicize our ac- tivities and achievements made possible by the untiring efforts of our classmates. We also wish to enhance forever those moments of our student career, that, though they seem alto- gether too minute or immaterial to cope with, will increase in a type of wordless meaning as this year 1950 grows faint and finally fades into obscurity. -The Editors 1 i ri rinilviwviuioi 213 1 3 1 1 10102 10:03 10111101 O -- -Y wlvff Page Two ----L-::'--11-:,4: -W -- f ZLL O! Mrs. Overly was a graduate of Millersville State Teachers College, and had taught the third grade in the New Holland Schools for over sixteen years. Previously she had been a mem- ber of the faculty at Leola and Honey Brook. Mrs. Overly, while serving' at New Holland, demonstrated far more than an excellent ability to instruct. The high value she placed on such traits as promptness and correctness make hei' absence felt all the more. Typical of her ways were the many times in which she placed her profession in a position higher than her physical well-being. These habits, in addition to her careful appreciation of time and its value to others, combined to form a most respected per- son, whose loss is keenly felt in the New Holland Schools. e 1 -5 Pane Pour ibevbcafion x Nearing the once-too-prolonged, now much too-rapidly-ap- proaching end of our high school career, the class of 1950 wishes to pause in these seemingly shortened days to commend the num- erous fine thoughts, words, and deeds that have been attributed to Miss Virginia M. Hoffman. Through their entire encounter with school, many of the students in this current year's graduating class, have been bene- ficiaries of this high school principal's unlimited patience, heart- felt condolences, and understanding personality, not to mention hef' excellent presentation of knowledge and development of ta ents. Complete reimbursement is impossible. Bender. Twenty of this group are among this year's senior class. The next year found Mrs. Bernard Rife, now deceased, as our second grade instructor. In 1940, Mrs. Harold Overly became our third grade homeroom teacher. Miss Mary Harsh was tutor to thirty-five students in our fourth school year, nineteen of whom were to remain in New Holland High School until the end of their school career. The following term, forty-two pupils entered grade five under the supervision of Mrs. Anna S. Dil- ler. Our first club was formed that year . . . the Good Citizens' Club . . . which proved of great interest. During the year we entertained the sixth grade at a party, and also held a picnic in a nearby meadow. Miss Helen B. Fenninger was our sixth grade instructor. Twenty-two of the forty-two students are among our class members this year. As our activity, we printed a newspaper . . . The Chatterbox . . . with Betty Loetscher and Benny Snyder as co-editors. In 1944, we entered into our first year of Junior High School, with thirty-seven students, under Miss Frances Baum. Twenty-four of these are members of our present day class. During our holiday season, we held a Christmas party in our homeroom, which was then Room 19. Forty-two pupils entered grade 8 with Miss Louise Bair, now Mrs. Laverne Witmer. Room 19 was again our homeroom. - Our first year in Senior High School found many students entering from outlying districts to bring our class roll to 78, which was the largest Freshman class up to that time. Fifty-four members of the class are now a part of the Class of '50. Our homeroom teachers were Miss Ruth A. Witman and Miss Jane Cromis, and Rooms No. 6 and No. 8 were our homerooms. Our class officers were: Warren Piersol, president, Bill Gable, vice president, and Benny Snyder, secretary-treasurer. Our grade and the tenth grade participated in a Christmas party, held in the auditorium. Sixty-nine pupils entered our Sophomore year, under Mr. Robert Weaver and Miss Janet McCormack, in Rooms No. 5 and No. 8. The oiiicers elected that year were: Warren Piersol, president, Leon High, vice presidentg and Pat Musser, secretary-treasurer. Our 1947 and 1948 activity was a trip to Hershey to attend a hockey game. In our Junior year, Mr. Robert P. Simon and Miss Janet McCormack shared the supervision of fifty- nine students, fifty-four of whom will graduate this year. The officers were: Warren Piersol, presi- dentg Hiram Overly, vice presidentg Dave Yunginger, secretary, and Jack Spotts, treasurer. Once again we journeyed to Hershey, but this time to attend the Ice Capades. Our social calendar for that year was completed with the annual Junior-Senior Reception. This, the last year in our Alma Mater, finds fifty-seven students who are divided into Room 1, under Mr. Robert P. Simon, and Room 8, under Mr. Roy W. Brandau. The presentation of Almost Summer was the first of our Senior activities, which included the Senior Prom, and the Junior-Senior Recep- tion. It was concluded with a class trip to Washington, D. C. Mary Margaret Shontz Advisor - Miss Elizabeth Troxell New Holland High School can well be proud of the splendid cooperation and work done by its Stu- dent Council. Composed of twenty members and ten alternates, its aim is to create a closer relationship between the faculty and the student body, and to promote the general welfare of the school. Our Stu- dent government is widely known for originating the idea of forming a Lancaster County Student Coun- cil Organization. Since then, numerous schools throughout the county have combined to form a strong, firm organization, meeting' once every year. The Council of New Holland also sends delegates to the an- nual District and State Conventions . . , this past year meeting at Carlisle and Coatesville, respectively. Its undertakings this year included: obtaining bicycle racks for the playground, providing standard- ized frames for pictures in the hall, securing a trophy case with the money donated by the class of '49, purchasing ping-pong' equipment, selecting outside assemblies for the year, and sponsoring all school socials. The Student Council has proven to be a vital part of our school, and deserves the recognition it gets. f 4:,n.47,,:f:'-' if-1 -' Page Sixty-eight :- efi,+71,,g,,,1i L1f- D V E 5 .. f Q ,ff i - Rig SE f M E N T5 W pa from Ms. Jshss 71 Auld Ms. ssssl Mrs. D. Leadership ls Worth Working For Whether it's man or machine, it's hard work to gain leadership and harder work to keep it. It takes the skill and loyalty of hundreds of men to keep the New Holland Baler at the top of its field. It took work and talent for Warner Frazier to become editor of this yearbook. And Warren Piersol didn't get to be Class President simply by wanting the job.
