wi., ---- , ,ge ii New Holland High -School .Sergices The first regular established school in the village of New Holland was founded in 1786, and lays claim to being the first Free Schooln in Pennsylvania. It was organized one year before Franklin Col- lege, Lancaster. The prime founder of the school was Reverend Frederick Me-lsheimer. This first institution was a German and English school, in which both the German and English languages were spoken and taught. The building project was started after subscriptions were taken amounting to ninety-seven pounds, which were paid with logs, materials, and labor. Other subscriptions were taken later to defray EXPENSES 'The dedication for the first school was held December 26, 1787. The program began with a pI'0C6SSi0D of the SCh001 S'0llv0l8l'S, MRSWFS, SiHg91'S, ministers, trustees and elders of the church-es. Trhe program included: Vocal selections in German. A Prayer and O-ration - Maguster Rechie. Scripture - Proverbs, Chapter 3, 13-16, verse, Rev. Frederick V. Melsheimer. Vocal Music Discourse - Christopher Gross, a trustee. Reading of the Fundamental Articles of the school in both German and English. In 1841, this early school house was discarded, because ofthe Common School Law of 1835, which went into enect. A new building, which was the Methodist lvieenng l-louse enlarged, equipped and di- vided into four rooms, served as the school until 1875. During the summer of 1844, a new school was erected. This was a two-story brick building, with a clock tower, basement, four rooms, and a directors' room. In 1913, a two-story addition was erected on the southeast corner, fronting Main street. The present school building was finished in the spring of 1925. This structure consisted of twelve rooms, gymnatorium, basement, and oflice. A two-acre playground was added at that time. February 16, 1938 found the comvm-unity dedicating' an addition to this bulil-ding. This annex made lit possible to meet the 'broader needs of education. Home Making, Industrial Arts, Music, Busi- ness Education, the regular classical courses and Health Education can be taught more effectively with the added space and equipment.
