At times a perfect object might cast a distorted shadow an-d again at other times a clear shad- ow , but bear in mind the fact that a distorted object never casts a clear shadow , However, the more perfect the object the more distinct the shadow. The objects that have cast the 1924 Shad- ow have been two in number: first, memories of the past., typified by the frontier days which cast aclear Shadow in the scenic pictures of our book. The second object, our school life, has been both clear and distorted. Accordingly, the shadows have varied from perfect reproduc- tions to wavering and flickering images. We trust, kind reader, that as you read the succeed- ing pages you will conclude that it is as clear a Shadow as it could be made, remembering too, that no model made by human hands is perfect. Such being the case, High School life does not al- ways cast a clear shadow. 1 A ' g y , V w ifi! 4 Yr: 4 gy 'N 7 Y it 1 ' in ,-'lglllfl . . .1 Wwwwm K - U J If N vi 1 , nrlnlyr N-mth tk, , . Alma Mater, New Hampton High, All through our Sophomore year Our heads were bent on mighty things, Our cllassmen knew no fear. When we came back as Juniors, The race had half been run, New lessons thou didst teach us, I To meet the trials to come. But now when we are Seniors, And our High School life is through, We realize, as ne'er before, The benefits gained from you. Thnough four long years we battled on, The far off goal a seeking, And now the battle is o'er, the prize is vuon, New trials we shall be meeting. But we shall overcome them, Thy lessons well we've learned, And though the years be far away, Our thoughts to thee shall turn. 1924 -C. K. '2-I. Twenty-seven Shzxhuiu HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS As we stop to think of our High School life, we recall many incidents, some but vaguely, but others with startling vividness. One of our vivid visions is our Freshmen days. We remember with what sink- ing hearts and quaking knees, we, seventy-four in number, tiled into the assembly before the curious and amused eyes of the other students and the faculty on the 2nd day of September, 1920. For many days we were the victims of jokes concerning our greenness, but we soon established one of the characteristics of our Senior Class of today, true sportsmanship in alll things. We were very proud of the fact that we had representatives in the Declamatory Contest of 1920 and one of our classmates, James Babcock, won Hrst pLace in the oratorical class. We vsere also prominent in athletics and in the High School Orchestra. Many worthwhile characteristics were becoming noticeable in our class, but not until ue entered as Sophomones did they fully develop. We, as Sophomores, were conspicuous for our eagerness to become more highly educated. In this year our number had only decreased to seventy-one members and because of our intense loyal- ty, pep, and enthusiasm for our class and school, we began to play a prominent part in the school's life. Some of our members could be pointed out in the Declamatory Contest, boys' and girls' basket-ball teams, football and baseball te-ams, the debate team and the Girls' Glee Club. Our school activities were not numerous but they were welll attended by all the Sophomores, and the school agreed that we had pep. We recall more clearly the events that took place in our Junior year. They were many and close together but they were all a great success. Frequently we came in contact with the serious side of life and we earnestly began to prepare our- selves to become useful in the world. Although we were more serious minded stu- dents than before, we entered heart and soul into all the school events. Instead of coming to a standstill, our intense loyalty to our class and school became more noti- ceable and it established an honored place in the school's records. We are now Seniors. The lower classmen gaze at us with reverence and awe as we are pointed out to them as splendid examples of young men and women, and well they may, for we have acquired a dignity and poise that comes to those only that see themselves steadily nearing the goal on life's path. 'Ilhus far we have only been preparing ourselves to enter the world. Yet though we do not fully realize the roughness of life's road, we know that by perseverance and loyalty to our friends and principles we will add our names, possibly slowly, but surely, to the list of suc- cesses in the world. As we leave New Hampton High School we have within our hearts a feeling of deepest gratitude for the unselfish service of those who have willingly and patiently helped to reach the first important goal of our lives. We can truthfully say that the members of the faculty have been ever Willing to render to us service and advice on every step of our path. M. W. '2-i. ll! However, they have gained some knowledge of the things which are necessary to them in order that they may enjoy the rights of citizenship which they receive as members of this nation. They enjoyed the first part of their High School life with the Class of June, 1923, and the last semester they were heartily received by the members of the Class of June, 1924. In departing, the members of the Class of Janua.ry, 1924, wish to ex- tend to those who will graduate so soon, best wishes for their success. P a trick Keegan CLASS COLORS-Maroon and Old Gold ln the year 1922, our class of about sixty students entered New Hampton High School as Freshmen. We entered into the spirit and life of the school so quickly that great things were prophesied for us. The next year 1923, or our sophomore year, our class was represented in all the life of the High School. Bernice Blankenheim represented us on the girls' basket ball team, Chester Jones represented us on the debate team, and in the Declamatory Contest Madaline Brannon brought an additional honor to us by winning first place in the dramatic class. A number of us were musical and joined the musical- organi- zations of the school. It is evident that tlhe prophecy made the year before was al- ready coming true. This year, or our Junior year, our class has stepped to the front in everything. Soon after school opened in September, the class was organized under the direction of Miss Kling, our class advisor. Julian Natvig was elected president, Derwood Mc- Aloon, Vice-Presicent, Carsten Johnston, Secretary and Patrick Keegan, Treasurer. As soon .as things were running smoothly we had our first social event in the form of a picnic. The next event was a big, joint Junior Sophomore party. However, the biggest social event of the year will- be the Junior-Senior banquet, which will- take place in the Spring. - In Athletics, the Juniors vion their share of honors. Three men: Earl Young, Paul McCahen, and Chester Jones won letters in footballl and four ot our girls: Ber- nice Blankenheim, Evelyn Evans, Ruth Chambers and Mary Cooney .nade the first basket ball team, either as regulars or subs. Evelyn Evans and Made1i.ne Brannon were tvxo out of the three who composed the High School' Debate Team and in the Declamatory Contest, Madaline again won list place in the dramatic class. The musical talent of our class has not decreased as the number of Junio.s in the High School Gl'ee Club will show. Some may ask, 'Where were the rest of the Juniors? They were all there, loyal- ly supporting their school, class, and those who represented them in the different sclool even-ts. The prophecy of 1922, has in a word, been fulfilled and the Juniors have made a record of which they may well be pioud. G. We offer to the Juniors our condolences. We trust that when they finish reading this page their spirits will be partiallly revvived. Julian Natvig's afraid Mi.ss Halvorset wants to marry him, because she told him if he didn't settLe down, she would have to take his name. What does this sentence mean? asked Miss Crane. Man proposes, but God disposes. . Ed. Snyder: It means that a man might ask a woman to marry him, but only the Lord knows whether she will or not. Miss Kling: Why can't a deaf and dumb man be convicted of a crime? Carsten Johnsten: He must have a hearing. De-rwood: I hear that Evelyn kissed Lammy last night. Pat: Did he kiss her back? Derwood: No, she wasn't wearing that kind of a dress. Miss Kling: What is the prominent woman's club of America? Carsten Johnsten: 'The rolling pin. Becky: Alice, I've lived on your glances. To which the editor, in a fiendish moment replied: 'Send me your photograph and perhaps I can tell you. Don't you want to dance the tango? asked Speed Seery. Indeed, I do, said Luella Wentz. J a m:s 0'Neill CLASS COLORS-Old Rose and Gray On the fourth day of September, 1922, seventy-two Lively Freshmen entered New Hampton Hi-gh School. We must admit we were green but we soon showed our upper classmen that we had ability to loarn. At the end of two weeks we were mingling with the upper classmen in all the activities of the school. In a few weeks after en- tering High School, we organized and with Miss McCoy and Miss Harrod as our advis- o rs, we elected Francis Canty, president, Walter Kearns, vice-presidentgJames O'Neill, treasurer: and Roland Rosauer, secretary. In December, the class advisors, the of- ficers and a few others chosen to assist, planned a party and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. We also enjoyed the Costume party gixen during our Freshmen year. As Freshmen, our class was well represented in the Declamatory Contest and al- though none of the prizes were awarded to our members some promising ability was displayed. Several of our girls joined the Gl,ee Club. All of our members carnie-d music and alithough this subject was compulsory, no one suffered from hearing our dhorus. In January, fifteen others joined our group making us eighty-seven strong. After a refreshing summer's vacation, we returned in September feeling agreat Ceal older since we had taken our first great stride up the ladder. As Sophomores, we Booked upon the Freshmen class of '24 with eyes filled to o'erHowing with sincere syn pathy. But I dare say, some of our boys lost their feeling of sympathy when it came time for hazing. We soon organized with Miss Osterhus as ,our advisor, electing Paul Karnatz president, Russell McAlooin, vice-president, Wayne Smith, secretaryg and James O'Neill, treasurer. Out of the many sophomores that took up Declamatory Contest work, several were selected tio appear on the final contest. Second place in the Dramatic Class was awarded to Agnes Kearney, a lively member of our class. Mabel Gustofson represented the Sophomore class on the Girls' Basket Ball Team. On March fourth, a Junior-Sophomore party was enjoyed by the members of the two classes. A program was given in the Assembly Room under the direction of Miss Kling and Miss Osterhus and their eiorts prgoduced a delightful entertainment. Many Seniors and Freshmen expressed their desire to attend. Since the day we entered N. H. H. S., we have slhown our loyalty in support of athletics as well as of the social activities of the schooll and from the past record, we have every reason to believe that our class possesses ability. SCHOOL ROOM PHILOSOPHY Rope Mc. says, All a flapper thinks about is her clothes and sometimes she's practicallly thoughtless. Shakespeare or some one of those felters said, That all the world's a show. He forgot to say that there were also a lot of bad actors. Clothes never make the man but they oftimes break him. Hungny Ransom says, A man is a man forever, but Isabelle Clemens a man, NEVER. As one wlro is a very good observer gazes over the Sophomore class., he sees the proud, hapfy faces of youths: some of them who will make future presidents of our great and noble count-ry and others who will run them a close second. Still others. can be pictured with a gun, ra brace and jimmy in their hands and a. mask over their faces. These are the ones we are pulling for and we will land then in prison yet before they die. Th girls, besides being very beautiful, are far above the average in intelligence and undoubtedly will make good wives for the future presidents, not to say anything about the criminals. However, there are several of the .flapper dwign. They will no doubt make good pictures for magazine covers. Goodbye Forever A Shieky One The young and handsome Mr. Rosauer, Artie Kearns and Becky, Runs a very fine touring car, They are some shieks, they say, But the other night he got quite a jar, O, they're the cat's pajamas, When in the gas tank, he dropped a cigar. They go stepping night and day. The Latest addition to the Sophomore Class is a young man of Irish descent, a very popular ladies' man. We'll never tell who he is. One night hast week, as I was coming from a little cand session with the boys, I got a fright that set me back a spell. As I was passing 'The Bucket of Blood , I saw the figure of a man standing in the doorway. He was flashing a light on t-he keyhole and shaking the door as if to break it down. My heart arose in my mouth but I swallowed it, and choking down my fear, I jumped on him. Then alrl was darkness. The next morning I .awoke in the County Bastile for it was only Jack O'Day on his nightly rounds. Mandel Kramer, our star athlete, tells how his father was injured recently. Vell, we have horse. Horse wouldn't go. Fodder he get behind post, hit horse. Horse no go. I say I make horse go. Fodder he stand back of horse holding da post. I get vaste, pore gasoline, put under horse, light match, horse kick post, three ribs break fodder---. STOCK YARD POETRY Poems by Long Eared Pete. What They All Say There are things I learned in the class room, I know a creature wondrous fair, Others I leanned at the party or the ball, With eyes so blue and golden hair, But the things that pay my board and noom, She doesn't rouge, she doesn't paint, Bah Jove! I didn't learn at all. And on her face the powder ain't. She looks just right to me Gee! Don't you see, Why she's MY GIRL. A New Suggestion for the Four Horsemen Rope McAloonnPatrick H. The Sophomores were surprised to find that this class was not of the regulation greennessg consequently they attempted to freshen us at the fountain but they succeeded only in getting the water Rusty. N At the color fight, the Sophomores tried in vain to remove the Freshmen colors, Purple and White , but the Freshie boys showed too much skill in fighting and the fracas was undecisive. 'Dhe Freshmen have also taken a very active part in athletics.. They have help- ed to swell the attendance at games and have taken a most active interest in all High School sports. A large number entered the Declamatory Contest and Miss Crane, we are told, is looking forward to several great orators and at least one great actor. It is in the classroom, however, that our real character is shown. In Englnish we are especi-ally proud of ourselves, since no trailers have been necessary as inform- er years. When we graduate from Mr. Crawford's Botany class we are quite sure that we can tell an' onion from a cabbage or a violet from a rose. In January, 1924, eleven more students entered the portals of N. H. H. S., be- coming members of the vast throng seeking for knowledge. They were a bit timid at first but waded bravely in, also loath to be considered green by the usually envi- ed upper classmen. We all enjoyed several delightful social gatherings under the supervision of Miss Helming, our class adviser. F ' The majority of our bright class was excused from final examinations on account of their unusually excellent work. Thus ends' our long to be remembered Freshmen year. D. S. '24 and M. A. '24.
