First class graduates — 1870 First school to offer a course for teachers in public school music — 1874 Alexander Graham Bell joins faculty — 1877 Largest professional music fraternity in America, Phi Mu Alpha Sinphonia, founded at Conservatory — 1898 Oldest school symphonic orchestra in America and School of Opera established - 1902 Jordan Hall dedicated - 1903 Conservatory becomes charter member of the Natibnal Association of Schools of Music — 1923 Conservatory authorized to grant degree Bachelor of Music - 1925 First nationwide broadcast by Conservatory orchestra -1931 Conservatory authorized to grant degree Master of Music - 1933 Independent Conservatory Chorus organized under the direction of Lorna Cooke deVaron — 1947 Conservatory admitted to membership in the New Eng- land Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, thus becoming the first regionally-accredited, independent college of music — 1951 Conservatory celebrates its 100th anniversary — 1967 The New England Conservatory is very much an integral part of the community. The faculty student, and alumni resources make possible two -thirds of the musical life of Boston and the New England area. Conservatory students faculty, and alumni are the backbone of over 150 church and temple choirs throughout the area. Ballet, opera, and Broadway show pit orchestras, jazz groups, and a host of other musical activities are made possible by the Conservatory ' s existence. N. E. C.
