NEUME 1963 STAFF Editor in Chief Co -Editors Business Manager -- PHOTOGRAPHY -- Richard Vrotney Mario Borges Dorothy DeCillis Ann McCarthy Richard Tassinari Bernard Worrftll Earl Eyrich Sandra Bonner Ronald Goldman Robert St. Onge LITERARY -- Dorene Blanchard Virginia Kneisel Noreen Murphy ADVERTISING -- Donna Bragdon Nancy Briggs Nancy McFarland ART -- Ruby Simon Faith LaReviere George Lewis Steven Zehr CLERICAL Terry Ffolliott Leon Gregorian Judy Kirk wood Bryna Weis PREFACE Selecting the theme to be included in this volume of the Neume was a very delicate undertaking. The stream of music which started back in the medieval times as a slender trickle, has become in our time a roaring torrent. The symphony concert, the small orchestra, the ensembles and the different organizations, have familiarized us in- creasingly with the good and great in music. So that the Reminiscences of tomorrow may be based on the memories of yesterday and the realities of today, we present this, the Neume of 1963. 4 FROM THE EDITOR It is with pleasure that we, the staff of the 1963 Neume, present this volume. Many preparations have gone into this book, making it, we hope, a satisfactory token to refer to in coming years. For the Seniors who are graduating the book contains a small part of the routine of this college which has shaped and prepared them for professional music positions. For the Graduate students obtaining their Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma this book brings back memories of still greater learning and perfection enabling them to perform and teach from a larger source of knowledge . For the Undergraduates this Neume symbolises the past days of the collegiate experience and the coming days of the same in which they will further themselves and mature musically. I sincerely hope all concerned find this NEUME 1963 worthy to keep and call back memories of days spent at N.E.C. Earl E. Eyrich Editor 5 Truly Mr . Melville Smith should be acknowledged as an outstanding person. He had conducted a European tour for organists; in 1961 he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque; he studied at Harvard University un- til 1920; an Elkan Naumourg Tr avelling Fellow from 1920-21, and a John Knowles Paine Fellow from 1921- 23. He taught theory at the David Mannes School, New York, from 1924-25 and at the Eastman School of Music; He was associate professor of music at the Western Reserve University; organist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and of the Mt. Vernon Church of Boston; he was director of the Longy School of Music; taught organ at Wellesley College; he directed the organ and choir of the First Church in Boston; gave organ and harpsichord recitals in many towns, and taught theory at the New England Conservatory of Music. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts . His death, on July 16, 1962, caused sorrow for all who knew him. 6 XTl On August 20, 1962, William Van Lennep died. His life had been very active . He received three degrees at Harvard University, was a Fellow of Folger Shakespeare Library, Wash- ington, D.C., research association, Hunting- ton Library, San Marino, California, and Curator of Theater Collection, Harvard. He taught drama and theater at Harvard; gave lectures at North Eastern University from 1947 to 1950. He was a Society Theater Re- search member, and was an author of many books . William Van Lennep taught at the New England Conservatory of Music for nine years . 7 For thirty -three years, Mrs. Margaret C. Mason has been an inspiration to countless numbers of students in this school. Whether teaching harmony, counterpoint, harpsi- chord, or piano, she has proven to be a teacher in the most wonderful sense of the word. Mrs. Mason is an alumna of this college, having received her Soloist ' s Diploma and her Master of Music degree (honors with distinction) here. She studied piano with Stuart Mason, Pierre Luboshutz, and with Lazare Levy in Paris; Composition with Frederick Converse; and counterpoint with Georges Causade. As a teacher and person, she has showered upon her students a great warmth, patience, and understanding. In this manner she has subtly put her pupils at ease and has led them into the rich realm of music . Therefore, we of the Neume humbly and sincerely dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Margaret C . Mason, great benefactor to music and to knowledge . 9 Courtesy of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY CHESTER W. WILLIAMS, PRESIDENT 11 It is a pleasure to congratulate the members of the Class of 1963 as they pass an important milestone. Some of you will go directly into professional pursuits, others will undertake graduate studies. In either event, you face future challenges, frustrations, and tests which may cause those of the past to appear insignificant by comparison. It is our hope that your years as undergraduates at the New England Conservatory have in some substantial measure equipped you to face the future with confidence, competence, and eagerness . David Hicks Dean As Director of Residence I have gained great satisfaction and pleasure in work- ing with each and every one of you. The Dormitory has a definite effect upon the students ' academic and personal life. I hope group living has made for you a pleasant background for college life and established good relationships that may continue through a lifetime. Martha M. Kenny Director of Residence 12 Elwood E. PERFORMING ORGANIZATIONS 53 j THE CONSERVATORY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FREDERIK PRAUSNITZ, CONDUCTOR Under the baton of Frederik Prausnitz the Conserva- tory Symphony Orchestra performed a new and con- trasting repertory during the academic year of 1962 1963. Included in this repertory were such pieces as " La Valse " of Ravel, Mr. Pinkham ' s " Catacoustical Measures, " The " Tragic Overture " of Brahms, Prokofiev ' s Second Symphony, Bruckner ' s Third Symphony, and " Jeux " of Debussy. 55 THE CONSERVATORY CHORUS LORNA COOKE de VARON, DIRECTOR The Tour Chorus at Atlantic City, New Jersey. 56 MRS. de VARON This was certainly an exciting year for the Conservatory Chorus. They started out by reading Debussy ' s " Martyrdom of Saint Seba- tian, " and performed Bach ' s Cantata 140, Charpentier ' s " Messe de Minuit de Noel, " and a Distler Motet for their Christmas Con- cert. Later on in the year they studied Conrad Beck ' s " Death over Basel " and performed it with the orchestra, Mr. Prausnitz con- ducting . The Tour Chorus had a very fruitful trip to New York City and Atlantic City, where they amazed several hundred Music Educators at their National Convention. The Chamber Singers ' main fete (in the French sense of the word) was their recording session in early June. 57 OPERA THEATRE BORIS GOLDOVSKY, THOMAS PHILLIPS, AND ROSS REIMUELLER. DIRECTORS John Ring, Joy Mclntyre, Richard Firmin, and Linda Phillips in Ward ' s " The Crucible. " Directed by Thomas Phillips and Ross Reimueller. The Conservatory Opera Theatre became a very active department this past academic season. The Theatre performed operas such as " the Medium " of Menotti, " II Tabaro " of Puccini, " The Crucible " of Ward, and " The Bartered Bride " of Smetana. In each opera one was not only impressed with the musical delivery of it, but with the acting, which was always very impressive, and the sets, which were always imaginative. 58 59 ORGANIZATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS MU PHI EPSILON MEMBERSHIP ROLL - 1963 Gail Carson RosLland Chuau Linda Doe 11 Sally Oleson Judy Olson Ruby Simon Jean Travaglini Leah Tuchinsky Virginia Van Ham Charlotte Woolf 61 SIGMA ALPHA IOTA MEMBERSHIP ROLL - 1963 Judith Bedford Judith Bergeson Brenda Cole Marta Findlay Noreen Murphy Rae Palmer Martha Presbrey Annette Sampson Annette Sterberg Irene Weldon 62 DELTA OMICRON KAPPA GAMMA PS I PHI MU ALPHA SINFONIA FIRST ROW, from left: Robert Waaker, Roy Magnuson, David Girardin, Barry Richman, Robert Modr, Ken Mitchel, Vincent Bucci, and Fred Zaleski; SECOND ROW : Richard Compton, Tom Smith, Jeff Coding, Henry Schnierer, Tony Rego, Leon Gregorian, Regg Bonnin, Robert Guerrini., and George Lewis; THIRD ROW: Paul Dorsam, Robert Olive, Mr. Pinkham, Stephen Schwartz, Phillip Ventry, Peter Canaday, Ralph Metcalf, and Mr. Rosewall. 65 CONSERVATORY CLUB ELSON CLUB STUDENT COUNCIL SITTING, from left: Virginia Van Ham, Kenneth Hilliard, Thomas Smith, Edward Fenninger, president, Irene Weldon, Richard Vrotney, Linda Jackson, Arthur Johnson, and Carol Hallworth.
