This group is known as Student Council and is the governing body of the high school. lt is made up of the president, eight seniors, six jun- iors, and tour sophomores. All members are elected through a school election. This year the president is James Wirtz. Miss Bernice Bartlett is the sponsor and advisor. Besides solving problems of the school, the Council plans social activities and considers sug- gestions or complaints brought to its attention. There are five standing Committees that help Council with different problems. These commit- tees are headed by council members who are se- lected by the Student Council Advisor and the President. Every year Council sponsors the Sophomore Reception and the Point Award Assembly. This year for the first time in many years, Student Council sponsored a Homecoming. This included the Homecoming game against Butler, the crown- ing ot a Homecoming Queen, and, as a grand climax, a Homecoming dance. Since this event was such a great success Council plans to mal-ce Homecoming an annual event. Student Council is an important and essen' tial part in the makeeup ofthe school. The members ot these committees are selected by the chairman with the help of the Stu- dent Council odvisor. Each committee consists of 15 to 20 members, the size of the committee de- pends cn the amount ot work that the committee must handle The Ways and Means Committee is headed by Jack Mrozek. This committee is responsible for all financial matters. Some of the proiects handled by this committee are: selling tickets for school plays, scheduling bus trips to out of town games, and selling book covers in the home rooms at the first of each school term. Carol Jenkins heads the Point Award Com- mittee. They total the activity points of every student to determine who will be given Activity Award Pins at the end of the school year. Any student who has a total of 90 points receives a 90 point pin and it he has 200 or more points he receives a 200 point pin. These points are earned by the student's participation in extra-curricular activities, school attendance and honor grades. The School Improvement Committee sponsors 75 intramural bowling and basketball, the clean up campaign and the auditorium ushers. This com- mittee is headed by Tom Kyle. The last Student Council Committee is the Bulletin Board Committee whose chairman is Eileen Davidson. The main purpose of this com- mittee is to keep notices, announcements, and posters posted on the Student Council bulletin board. These notices inform the students of Council's activities and other school events. Os unior Home Room Yep:-eAen tatia1eA Furs! "Together We Build, Together We Explore" is the motto ofthe Future Teachers of America. They accomplish this through their many programs which are de- signed to acquaint the members about opportunities in the various fields of educa- tion. The members study the various fields of teaching and lay plans and prep- arations for their futures. The F. T. A., which is affiliated with the National Association of Future Teach- ers of America, was chartered February TO, 1950 and was named the "Mary Van- Divort F, T.A." Miss Van Divort was a former Latin teacher in Ne-Ca-Hi and was one of the first sponsors of the club. Under the supervision of Mrs. M. Becker the F. T. A. has taken as its yearly project the helping of students who are having difficulty in a particular subiect. Various members of the club who are especially able or interested in a subiect tutor one of their fellow class members who may have ditificulty in that particular subject. Bonner, Director We-Ca-Hi land Under the direction of Mr. Bonner the band has done a great deal for the school and the town. A ditterent program was planned for the halt-time at every football game. The team knew the band was present by their loud cheers. The town knew the band was an active organi- zation when they saw them marching in several parades. This is accomplished by spending many hours in practice after school. This year the Mid-Western District Band was held in New Castle, The printing of the book makes it impossible for the results to be printed, but New Castle High's musicians will doubtless take many honors. Clteerleadem Cheerleaders have been a part of the school as long as anyone can remember. They are the necessary backbone of athletic events and build up the spirit and pep of all the students. The cheerleading squads are chosen in the spring months of the school year. There is a series of tryouts in which the applicants are taught the cheers and move- ments accompanying them by the outgoing cheerleaders. There are two squads of cheer- leaders. Eight girls comprise the varsity and six girls complete the junior varsity. The senior girls attend all out of town athletic events. Miss Nonetili, one of the girls' gym instructors, is the advisor. Pe, cw The Pep club is an important part of the school spirit of Ne-Ca-Hi. lt was organized in T955 to promote enthusiasm and active interest in school activities- not only the athletic events, but also dances, plays, and other school affairs. The club is made up of T200 members with pep club representatives from each home room. These representatives meet with Mr. A. Cowmeadow, faculty adviscr, and President Tony Chiaverini to discuss and plan all events. ln November, the Harlem Gloloetrotters were sponsored by the pep club. They also sponsored an athletic dinner and dance in honor of the Ne-Ca-Hi athletes. Each year pep club increases in size and importance. It is the hope of all Ne-Ca-Hi students that it will continue to progress and improve school spirit in the years to come.
