' 3, 1 fi A X f STUDENT COUNCIL I I I I i Student Council has been under the supervision of Miss Bernice E. Bartlett for the past nine years. The members of Student Council are elected by their classes, with the exception of the president, who is elected by the entire student body. There are nineteen members in the Council, the president, eight seniors, six juniors, and four sophomores. Meetings of Student Council are held every Wednesday during the third period. During these meetings the council attempts to solve school problems and carefully considers suggestions or complaints submitted by the students. The chairman of the six standing committees are coun- cil members. They are selected by the Student Council advisor and the president. During the year Student Council sponsors many activi- ties and proiects, such as the Sophomore Reception, the New Year's Eve Dance, the School Fair, and the Point Award Assembly. The Sophomore Reception is the first social event of the year. This provides dancing, entertainment, and refresh- ments for the sophomores and gives them a chance to get acquainted with one another. An event always looked forward to is the New Year's Eve Dance, which is held each year in the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The School Fair brings all of the clubs of Ne-Ca-Hi to- gether to have a good time. It is held in the gymnasium and on the basement floor of the high school. Each club has a booth or a show, and votes are cast for the most popular one by people attending the Fair. Profits of the Fair are divided equally among the clubs participating. Students' points for participating in school activities are tabulated, and students who have earned 90 or 200 points are given award pins at the Point Award Assembly, which is the final event of the year. OFFICERS President Leonard Cozza Vice-President Tim Foster Secretary Mary Lou Ryhal Treasurer Dave Bongivengo STUDENT COUNCIL COMMITTEES Student Council Committees, under the su- pervision of Miss Bernice Bartlett, meet each Tuesday during third period. The chairmen of the six Student Council Committees are Student Council members, and they select the members of their committees from the student body. The members of these com- mittees are chosen with the knowledge that they will contribute their time and eFfort to any pro- iect which the committee undertakes. The chairman of the Social Committee is Jean Ann Kerr. This committee has charge of the Sophomore Reception and the New Year's Dance. Jean and her committee have a tre- mendous iob in planning and managing these affairs. The Ways and Means Committee is headed by Raymond Coleman. Ray and his committee have charge of the money matters of Student Council. This year they have sold bus tickets to out-of-town games, tickets for plays, decals, and book covers. This committee also has charge of the School Fair, which is a very large project in itself. Students are given points for all activities in which they participate in which they do not get school credit. Helen Langan is the chair- man of the Point Award Committee, which ,W awards pins to students who have earned 90 points and pins with guards to those who have earned 200 points. At the end of the year a Point Award Assembly is held to present these awards. The School Improvement Committee spon- sors Clean-Up Campaigns, Football, Basketball, and Auditorium Ushers, Intramural bowling and basketball games, and other projects along the same line. Tommy Augostine, as chairman of this committee, has a great deal of work to do in organizing these proiects and in keeping them running smoothly. The Bulletin Board Committee has charge of making posters for Student Council sponsored dances, football and basketball games, the School Fair, and posting notices and the activity calendars on the Bulletin Board. June Reed is the chairman of this committee. This year a new committee was organized. This is the Question of the Week Committee. Ruth Adams is the chairman. Its duty is to select a question which concerns one of the problems existing in the high school and present it to the students. Answers to this question are placed in the Suggestion Box, and these suggestions are presented to the Student Council for considera- tion. ' THE NOTEBOOK COMMITTEE'S PROJECT The Senior Guidance Committee, this year under the direction of Miss Dorothy Young, has done much to develop projects for vocational and college students. The members have elected Arthur Vogan, chairman, Elaine Frazier, secre- tary, and Edward Gotti, treasurer. They have sponsored the guidance newspaper, The Note- book , with Craig Choate as Editor. Among their many other projects have been college meetings with some former students of Ne-Ca-Hi and plans for a How to Study program for every- one. The Junior Guidance Committee this year, as in the past, is planning several programs in the homerooms and in assembly on the topic of Social Guidance. They are pointing out to the Juniors the importance of this subject and some ofthe ways to help improve it in daily use. The committee is under the leadership of Miss Dor- othy Young and has elected as its officers Jim Lutz, chairman, Joye Dell Thompson, secretary, and Ronnie Mitchel, treasurer. The Sophomore Guidance Committee held its election of officers late in the year, and its plans were late starting. Bruce McCullough, chairman, and Edna Mae Smith, secretary- treasurer are the ofticers, and they have planned a program to help the in-coming Sophomores to adjust themselves to their new surroundings, a task which is always difticult. Miss Marjorie Nel- son is their advisor. The members of the Guidance Committees are appointed, two from each room. They meet on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday every other week, each group a dififerent day. Their programs have helped many students with vo- cational and college problems. A vote of thanks is due these committees for their hard work. For their work, they are permitted to attend the games without charge. Perfect attendance is required at all games and points are given according to the type cf duty done. Our maiorettes do an exceptional amount of practice in preparation for their performances. During foot- ball season they practice with the band every third and seventh periods and oftentimes by themselves without Miss Beneke's assistance. They are selected in April for the following year. These girls put a great deal of practice into their preparation and really deserve a lot of credit. ORCHESTRA The orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Willard E. Keene, is comprised of approximately fifty musically gifted students. This is one of the most active organizations in our school. They perform for the senior play, the school play, and the Student Council play. They give concerts for different P. T. A. units throughout the city and also for the students of the different junior high schools. A booth at the School Fair, oper- band and orchestra, is always ated iointly by the a main attraction. The orchestra participates in the district and the county, district, state orchestra festivals and and state music contests. An important occasion is the provision of music for the commencement exercises. The orchestra also takes part in several radio broadcasts. The big event of the year for them is the displaying of their talents in the Spring music festival. Come ,Mag Humphrey. around during first period some day. Mangham led the pack with 22 points, followed by Georges with T8 points and Carr with l4. Mangham set a new record with 37 rebounds. Ne-Ca-Hi 73 Sharon 65 The 'Canes evened it up with Sharon.
