The committee has three aims: l. to evaluate the present guidance program 2. to suggest new projects for guidance 3. to act as a committee to present problems in the guidance field to their home rooms or the home rooms of underclassmen. The sophomore committee met to discuss the means of a bridge between junior high school and senior and to serve as a follow-up of the students coming from the different junior highs to senior. The junior committee's project was an etiquette film, which was presented to the junior class. This was followed by a social aptitude test. The senior committee discussed and evaluated the college grades of former students and discussed the reason for low grades and failures in college, which some students made. This was presented in an assembly program in the form ofa panel discussion. This year, under their suggestion, career day was held for all classes, and not for just the sophomores and seniors. The senior committee also checked as to what type of work, college, or armed forces the graduates of the l95'l class followed after graduation. enior gyniclance ommiffee First Row-Ruth Lecnard, Mary Jane Wilson, Ann Berry, Anita Angelucci, Lois Simons, Dawna Houston, Pat Duddy Second Row-Anthony D'Augustine, Marilyn Canon, Mary lou Grouett, Carrie White, Jane Ann Popp, Dorothy Kaufman Third Row-Peter Vessella, Susan Rosenburgher, .leanne Cooper, Helen Sumner, Bruce Galbraith, Arthur Cirella, Paul Shaffer Fourth Row-Tom Harris, Larry Slay, Fred Guthrie, Joe Malandro, Howard Gaston Fifth Row-Jerry Berkstresser, Franklin Olney, George Fair 23 SOPHOMORE HOME ROOM REPRESENTATIVES First row: R. Three ways of becoming a member of Senatus Romanus are: First, the honor- final tests are given to all Latin students at the end of their first year. The stu- dents with the highest scores become members of the club. Second, students in the third-year Latin are admitted if they have a B average for the first semester. They are called conscripti members. Third, students in fourth-year Latin who have had a B average for their eleventh year are enrolled as socii members. The initiation is the big event of the first semester of Senatus Romanus. The prospective members are hazed by senior members for two weeks during school hours, and, on the night of initiation, they are tried before the Roman Senate. Business meetings are held on the second Monday of each month in the cafeteria where money-making proiects and school activities are discussed. The club has a party in February, and also a picnic in the Spring. 34 jlft !'I'L2l'L 0l'l'L6ll'LlfU'l'L Fulmen Romanum is the paper put out every month by the Latin classes. Father of the Bride, a comedy written by Caroline Francki, is based on the novel of the same name by Edward Streeter. The play was about the trials and tribulations of a father about to give his daughter in marriage. What was to be a simple home wedding, turned, hilar- iously, into a mammoth church wedding, with Father, of course, footing the bills. This team did have something, however, that it can be proud of. lt had the will to play the game as it should be played and the ability to bounce back after a bad beating. Many a high school team would have been so disheartened by such a de- feat as New Castle was handed by McKeesport that it would merely have gone through the motions forthe remainder of the season. Indeed, that is what looked like might happen to the Red Hurricanes this year until the final two games of the season when they came back to play like the New Castle teams of old. 55 i v i I' I I I 41 First Row: Robert Bleggi, Merle Reed, Steve Tarnoci, Don Runyon. J 2 P05515 COlfLlfLlfl g The New Castle High School Cross Country team, under the leadership of coach Austin Cowmeadow, completed a very successful season, losing only once in dual meets to Mt. Lebanon, the W. P. l. A. L. champions. Our home schedule saw a strong New Castle team run over Beaver Mead- ville at the Castle Hills Course. The Cane Harriers then invaded foreign territory, taking decisive victories over Meadville, Aliquippa and Ambridge, and losing to Mt. Lebanon. The next two meets were the big ones of the year. The first of these took place at the Alcoma Course near Pittsburgh. This event was the W. P. I. A. L. meet, in which New Castle placed second. This qualified them forthe P. I. A. A. running at State College, Pa., and extended the solid streak of placements in the state meet since cross country was established in New Castle in 1948. Senior members of the team are: William Broaddus, Michael Jurina, John McPhilips, Richard Pia, Ronald Bailey, Joe Peccarro, Charles Gibson, Donald Badger, Bill Buckner. This year was the last year for a girl to pass an ability test in gymnastics to become a Squad Leader. The new method is by point system. To become a Squad Leader, a girl must accumulate fifty points by bowling, swimming, basket- ball and various other outside activities in sports. This provides a chance for every girl to become one. Squad Leader emblems are given to the girls who have one hundred points, class numerals for 200 points, and a New Castle emblem for 300 points. The supervisors are Mrs. Frew and Miss Beneke.
