THEME OF THE 49'ERS Although our years of school, like the covered wagon trails of 1849, have at times been hard and discouraging, they have nevertheless been entirely worthwhile. We have had to dig and work hard, and sometimes it seemed we had struck a false vein. Finally, after screening, sifting, panning and carefully inspecting our possibilities and attributes, we realize we have what every person in the world wants — the golden key to opportunity. We pushed ourselves toward a certain destination. In the case of the 1849’ers it was wealth, freedom and happiness; ours was graduation with our experiences, friendships and years of schooling behind us. In the future many of us will encounter hardships, a few of the luckier ones will find the treasures they seek. As descendants of the 49’ers of California, we should take certain strides. We have mined the hills of education and the mountains of experience and we have gotten what gold we could mine with the tools each of us possessed. Now, we must strike out and hunt new lodes. But before we leave, let us take one last look through the historic pages of the years that passed so swiftly — our school days. Page Eight
