FOREWORD K As we come to the close of our high school years we realize that some of the happiest and most carefree times of our lives are behind us. Now that we are about to enter into a more serious and responsible phase of living, we hope that in the years to come we can relive the past in memory from the pages of this book. Haydon Page Four SENIOR REVIEW SOPHOMORES Jeepers, weren’t we a flock of lost pigeons that first day at Ne-Ca-Hi! It seemed rather silly to us, when our home room teachers gave us maps of the school, but later we realized how much they helped us. Weren’t we glad to learn that all those HORRIBLE things we heard don’t really happen to the sophomores? Our Reception was the highlight of our beginning days at Senior, and afterwards, we felt we really ‘belonged.’ We were certainly in a tizzy when our president quit school ond our vice president lolled in Florida. But looking back on it now, we remember our sophomore year as one filled with the fun and adventure of getting organized, becoming acquainted with each other and learning the customs that make up Ne-Ca-Hi. JUNIORS Many thought we would never make the grade, but here we are, upper classmen at last. Those poor Sophomores! That was some week end the football players and the band had at Bethlehem, when we won 28-6. But, before we knew it the New Year was upon us and we sponsored our first dance as Juniors. Then plans were made for the Hobo Hop. Oh, What Fun! With spring, Mary Lou Rocks was crowned May Queen. After that not much time was spent on school work, we just stood around admiring and envying the successful plans made by the Seniors, with all the privileges and responsibilities that belong to that choice species— and soon WE would be Seniors. SENIORS And then in the fall of ’48 we became Seniors! The highpoint of our first semester was the winning of the W.P.I.A.L. football championship and the P.I.A.A. cross country championship. Will you ever forget the night when Elaine Chapman and Tony Cialella reigned as king and queen at the football dance? The hilarious football parade, the noisy study hall, those pink slips, and the smash hits, “Susie the Siren,” and “The Professor Goes Haywire.” After an exciting season in basketball, the team managed to tie for fifth place. Then came thoughts of Easter vacation and graduation. The pictures, the dinks, the pennants, and name cards, our dinner dance, the annual, and CLASS DAY. But the Big Moment finally arrived when we walked across that endless stage and received our diplomas, which meant we must now bid a sad farewell to dear old Ne-Ca-Hi. Page Five ALMA MATER To the praise of our dear High School, Sing we, loud and long; Glory, honor and affection, Give we her in song. Hours of gladness, free from sadness, Happy students here; Sing we to our Alma Mater Ne-Ca-Hi so dear. All her children sing her praises With a love most pure, For her aims and inspirations Changelessly endure. With her beckoning hand before us We will do and dare, Live to honor, truth and virtue In these halls so fair. Bonds of friendship here we’re forming, They will never break, They will last still true unwavering For our High School’s sake. And the memories we will cherish As life’s path we tread, Of the friends we knew and valued Wearing black and red. When our student days are over, And no more we’re here, Still we’ll think of her with reverence, Alma Mater dear. Swell the singing, ever ringing, Gladly we’ll recall, When our student days are over, Life in these fair halls. THEME OF THE 49'ERS Although our years of school, like the covered wagon trails of 1849, have at times been hard and discouraging, they have nevertheless been entirely worthwhile. We have had to dig and work hard, and sometimes it seemed we had struck a false vein. Finally, after screening, sifting, panning and carefully inspecting our possibilities and attributes, we realize we have what every person in the world wants — the golden key to opportunity. We pushed ourselves toward a certain destination. In the case of the 1849’ers it was wealth, freedom and happiness; ours was graduation with our experiences, friendships and years of schooling behind us. In the future many of us will encounter hardships, a few of the luckier ones will find the treasures they seek. As descendants of the 49’ers of California, we should take certain strides. We have mined the hills of education and the mountains of experience and we have gotten what gold we could mine with the tools each of us possessed. Now, we must strike out and hunt new lodes. But before we leave, let us take one last look through the historic pages of the years that passed so swiftly — our school days. The teachers have always given aid In moments of distress, For this and other things they’ve done Our thanks we wish to stress. Memories of the fun we’ve had Shall linger on and on, And we shall look back to them Many years after we are gone. In all the years that we have strived To reach the goal of success, The ones we’ve spent at Senior High Are rated as the best. Departing from the school we love Makes us feel so blue, And all there’s left for us to say Is, “Good Luck to all of you.” —June Peebles CLASS SONG LEAVING DEAR OLD SENIOR (Tune: Cruiisng Down The River) Leaving Dear Old Senior on Graduation Day, Leaving all the ones we knew Makes us feel so blue. But though we are unhappy, Our thoughts shall always stay, Leaving Dear Old Senior on Graduation Day. The teachers’ looks and all our books Remain within our hearts, And though we’re glad, we’re also sad Because we must depart. So now we all must leave you There’s nothing more to say, Leaving Dear Old Senior on Graduation Day. —June Peebles Page Seventy-Four THE ROSTER ROSTER Ahmed, Norris German Club 11. 12; Track 10. 11. 12; Cross Country 11; Gym Team 12; Hall Patrol 10. 11; Office Boy 12. The President is elected by the whole school, the senior class elects eight members, the junior class elects six, and the sophomores elect four. The Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer are elected from the group. The Student Council meets every Wednesday, third period, and discusses all pertinent student problems. The Principal has a final veto on all action. Much of the work of the Council is handled through committees of which there are seven this year. All committee chairmen are members of Student Council, and the other members are chosen from the student body. They meet the first and third Monday of the month with Student Council to discuss problems of interest to the entire school. This is comparable to Congress with Student Council as the Senate, Home Room Representatives as the House, and Mr. Book as the President. Their duty is to keep the upstairs and the basement halls clear of students, and only the members of the band are permitted in the annex on the first floor. Each boy has a certain duty to perform which requires him to be on the alert at all times. Only those going to the library and those with hallway passes enter into the restricted areas. Only with student cooperation does this squad function properly. At all home games, GOALPOST members stood by the entrances to Taggart Stadium and worked their ways up and down the aisles of the bleachers selling their programs. It was hard work selling ads, writing “chatter” columns, and gathering pictures, but, as every GOALPOST member will tell you, there’s a lot of fun envolved, too. Page One Hundred Twenty-Nine THE ORCHESTRA New Castle High is one of a small number of schools which manages to maintain an orchestra. Many schools have completely forgotten orchestras in the rush to turn out bigger and better bands. The Ne-Ca-Hi orchestra, though small, has more than its share of talented musicians. The orchestra has taken part in many activities throughout the entire year. They have played for several assembly programs and provided music for entertainment between the acts of the Senior Plays. It was proud to be the host of the District Orchestra Festival. The Festival was a great success, and New Castle was well represented with twenty-four members of the orchestra participating in the Festival. There were three soloists on the program, two of whom, Joseph Colaluca and James Maxwell, were from our orchestra. Two of the orchestra’s outstanding musicians, Robert Florida and William Kinnard, not only represented New Castle at the All-State Orchestra, but they also won the highest honors available in their particular sections. The orchestra is under the direction of Mr. Joseph Replogle. Page One Hundred Thirty NE-CA-HI MAJORETTES Strutting out on the football field every Friday night and on other special occasions, are the twelve, snappy, high stepping, Ne-Ca-Hi Majorettes. These majorettes must possess pep, vigor, precision, and grace to put over their intricate routines and set their gleaming white boots to the rhythmic steps such as the Skater’s Waltz step that will long be remembered. Their untiring efforts, which are often forgotten by many, are shown by practicing during third periods, seventh periods and after school rehearsals. Speaking of rehearsals, Mrs. Replogle deserves much credit for directing and planning their work. Also, special mention should be given to Shirley Moraldi, majorette-in-charge, who, through her efforts perfected their routines each week. Majorettes graduating this year are: Adella Bigley, Jeanne Magee, Pauline Ross, Lucille Stone, and Clara Zedick. Those remaining are: Donna Cardella, Joanne Cubellis, Rose Linarelli, Lucy Memo, Shirley Moraldi, Mary Perrotta. and Esther Stone. Page One Hundred Thirty-Two The dramatics department under the direction of Miss Clara Hartsuff has produced three plays this school year. The senior play, “Susie the Siren,” whose cast is pictured below, was the first. This was followed by the school play, “The Professor Goes Haywire.” “A Young Man’s Fancy” was produced at a morning matinee for high school students only. The proceeds of this play are to be used by Student Council to purchase the pins and guards given as awards for achievement. The members of the cast were: Albert Johnson, Louise Wygant, Louis Forconi, Elyce Wygant, Jack Shellito, Charles Mancine, Paur Doerr, Charles Robinson. Ruth Simon, William Kinnard, Phillip Greenberg, Ann McKenzie, Betty Leddy, Ann Meehan, Bill Shewman, and Bill Sumner. Page One Hundred Thirty-Three SUSIE THE SIREN At the Ne-Ca-Hi auditorium, Friday evening, November 19, 1948, the Senior play was presented to a full house. ‘'Susie, The Siren,” a three act comedy by Anne Coulter Martens was a tremendous success. It told the adventures of Susie Reynolds, a very dramatic young lady who decided to be a siren. The humorous effects of this escapade on her beau, her family, her friends, and unfortunate visitors were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The characters were very ably performed. The audience laughed at the complications of a handsome young biology professor during the annual Haywire week at a small college. The action took place in the living-room of Professor Bunting and his two old maid aunts. Among his troubles were giggling girls, his picture in baby clothes, his fist fight with Socko, the boxing champion, and his landing of the dean’s pretty daughter. All in all, it was a play capably directed and well-acted. The characters were ably portrayed. Mayor’s Recreation Project Committee Lieut. Cecil F. Suber, Chairman HovCUf . t e leacA a uiuCcL exceed tnc wuzcfe X F MEMORY serves us right, the various orations delivered at graduation exercises were not only dull but mournful. The gist of these speeches seems to follow a general pattern .... ie ... . that your happy days were at an end .... there was work to be done .... that the student should put away the things of the child, etc. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There is a lot of fun throughout life .... providing we are doing the kind of work we like .... and doing it well. The student simply decides which line of endeavor he wishes to follow .... and then get going. Nothing, in this grand country of ours is impossible. It takes neither money or influence to achieve our ambitions. Simply a heap of determination coupled with a lot of effort. There’s always room at the top in any field of work .... because some who were there have fallen off. Johnson Bronze always has room for young folks who are willing to combine imagination and determination with energy and resourcefulness. The best of luck to each in the class of ’49. fla uiAatt 'S'KMje Sleeve etziutp 'Zfeeulfycuztte’KX 'Ttecv (£ ■4tCe. 7 e«.ti4cfCv zti6 z PAY DIRT for 49’ers No matter how much money you get in ’49, or in the future, remember that it’s the part you keep that really counts for the future.
