The imaginative members of the
design classes created intricate and
symbolic structures, which ran the
gamut from mobiles to complex pa-
per shapes. Much of their handiwork
graced the interiors of our school,
producing strange and varied com-
ments as to their worth, but adding
greatly to the esthetic stimulation of
Directed by Mrs. Hall, each clbss
met three times a week. The basic
purpose of the class was to provide
artistic aspirants with a means of ex-
pression through art form.
The ceramics and sculpturing
classes made not only pots and
bowls, but also decorative panels,
mosaic designs, and plaster sculp-
ture. Mr. Jacobson stressed organic
forms and conveyed his ideas
through bits and pieces of nature
which he brought into class. Once
they realized that techniques must
be perfect, the classes faced the
problem of thinking in three dimen-
sions. Through built-up and cut-out
shapes, new ideas took form.

Expression is the word! From
a few staunch souls, the art
courses of NCHS have grown
and diversified amazingly. Mr.
Fabry's painters and sketchers
have been joined by the sculp-
tors under Mr. Jacobson and
this year by the interesting de-
sign course under Mrs. Hall.
The whole department was
iumping up and down for
weeks after the moulding,
sketching, and snipping artists
of NCHS walked off with 15
gold keys and 'I6 place certifi-
cates in the 1959 Scholastic
Art Award Contest. Deane
Lawrence and Pam Chatter-
ton, with 4 and 9 gold keys
respectively, are eligible for
