Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1965 volume:

2 Foreword The theme of the 1965 Bruin is " A Day with Bruno! " Bruno, our beloved mascot, is as much a part of New Bern High School as are the students whom he watches enter and leave eacf day. Many times Bruno has felt the joy of victory and sensed the agony of defeat. He has shared with us the excitement on that unforgettable first day and our sorrow on graduation day. Bruno has many friends, and today he is showing Teddy, short for Theodore, around his school. We, the annual staff, shall accompany Bruno and view New Bern High School through his eyes. Each day begins on the patio, the center of the school. Everyone has to stop and talk with his friends about the events of each new day. As that day goes on, there is the math class where you can ' t add two and two, that English class where you can ' t spell cat, and that French class where you can ' t answer " Oui " to " Parlez-vous francais? " So come with us, the staff, and we hope that you will enjoy this year with Bruno as he shows Teddy NBHS. Are you ready? Let ' s go ! ' Dedication . . . The Bruin Staff pays tribute to a teacher, whose fidelity, love, sympathy, and high ideals have been guiding beacons to each who yielded to her influence. Our hearts overflow with devotion and gratitude for what she has done for us and our school. For many years she has given willingly of herself and has sought nothing beyond the strength of her endeavor. For years she has stood as a flaming torch, giving forth a light of advice to all who sought her help. Our problems have been her prob- lems. She has done much to discover and develop the highest qualities of our minds, characters, and souls. Never have we found our efforts wasted in her sight. Always we have found a constant encouragement to do bigger and better things. When we reach the stars, it will have been with her help. With pride we gratefully dedicate this annual to Mrs. Laura Rhodes. MRS. LAURA RHODES Mrs. Rhodes is showing Margaret Clark and Joan Aster the home of the Gods. MR. J. W. There are quite a few returning lettermen this year. Eugene Long will return as the 100 yard dash man and Harold Lilly, state pole vaulting cham- pion, will be back running the sprints, hur- dles, and pole vaulting. His younger brother Ralph Lilly will also be pole vaulting. Charles Nobles will be the heavy duty man for the cindermen as he will be working with the shotput this year. There will be many new additions to the track team this year. The new members will gain valuable experience this year and will help to produce some fine teams in the future. Good luck to the 1965 track team ! Eugene Long and Harold Lilly are the sprinters for NBHS. The pole vaulters this years are: Randy Mathis, Ralph Lilly, Harold Lilly. Santa (Billy Wheeler) and his trusty steeds (Bobby Rice, Jimmy Hodges, Ricky Greene, and Bill Bunting) are preparing to delight the little ones at the Christmas assembly. The cheerleaders in their working clothes presented a propped up team (they all seemed to have a support of some kind), and led the student body in some roof-raising, sky-rattling cheers. With a few words of encouragement from Mr. H. J. McDonald, superintendent, and Mr. Flowers, our principal, the team was tournament bound, hopeful of returning No. 1. 132 The hootenanny was started with the singing of Tom and Dave. Richard Connelley sang the well known ballad of " Greensleeves " . The Plainsman, Jimmy Ferebee, Anita Johnson, and Jerry Boykin sang many favorite songs. X Jreskmen ROBIN BELL 1st V.
