He scampers up and down the aisle He perches on a chair, But when you go to capture him He isn't really there. He laps the hands of seniors, He earns the highest mark: When a bottle crashes, Lets out a ghostly bark. Sometimes he growls a little When he doesn't want to come, But he never smokes a cigarette Or chews a yard of gum. He's a faithful little fellow No other class can know The many hidden secrets That make him come and go. He sits around at test time, Although he's out of view, He is an inspiration With his wonderful I. Q. He has a crimson ribbon That he wears so merrily: In fact it is the only Thing that you can see. The students call him Harvey, A dog that's just a hint, An imaginary canine Immortalized in print, And 'in the hearts of classmates Who will make for Harvey soon An invisible diploma, For he graduates in June. Here's to little Harvey With all his magic tricks. Its single purpose, as most have found out, is to try the cases sub- mitted by the Traffic Squad and mete out the acquittals and penalties necessary. I know many will remember how the Defense and Prose- cuting Attorneys tried to acquit and implicate, respectively, the down- trodden defendant. We can all recollect with pride the fine example of our working self-government in this school. 111 lst i'uxx-.Xlaii Pelirson, Fred Sterns. Mary lain Cleary. lfraneis XYiniarski. JUNIOR MINUTEMEN Since its formation in 1942 under the direction of Mr. William C. King, the Junior Minutemen organization has maintained a high stand- ard of patriotic and efficient endeavor. In September, 1944, when Mr. King was appointed to the Mass. State Dept. of Education, Miss Anna M. Brady took over the reins, and under her able leadership, our school has been able to maintain our 1004 weekly participation record in the sales of bonds and stamps until the end of the Victory Loan Drive this year. The organization now advocates the purchase of bonds and stamps as a suitable and convenient method of 'lsavings for the sake of saving." It will continue to operate for this purpose. 1.12 ? km S' an.. lst row Ilcft to riglitl-l.cu Crapu, -lack Nloclianu. lfugenc liriglitman, .lanics l'ricc, Xlary l.nnisc Xlcfartliy. TRAFFIC SQUAD The Traffic Squad is an essential part of the self-government system in New Bedford High School. It tries to maintain order in the corri- dors and cafeteria, and to protect the students from accidents caused by disorderly conduct and unregulated passing. Though, at times, the traffic squad may have censured some of us, deservedly, for our misconduct, we shall always admire and appreciate this efficiency, and the Commendation it has brought to this school. 113 lst nm'-'l'l1:ulmleiis liurzyezi. .Xlan Pelirsun, llernaril l'urtnuy, Mary Lou Cleary, -lack Wage ner. CRIMSON COURIER The Crimson Courier, our school newspaper, carried on in good fashion this year by publishing monthly issues. The Crimson Courier has provided invaluable experience to many members of the Senior Class by giving them some experience in their respective vocations of the future, such as journalism, business and sales. We have all appreciated its many columns including editorials, class gossip and, of course, the inimitable Grape-Vine. It has recorded all the important athletic, social and club events, faithfully throughout high school, and "Some day it will be a pleasure to recall these things." 114 FW lst rem' Klcit to i'iglit--lflm-aiioi' llarrctt. ,l'll2lflKlt'llS fimvzyrzi, Hci'narcl l'ui'tlmy, Xlary Lou Lilcary, lfrzuicis XYilll2il'Slil, Tlicrcsa licllvy. .fml row llc-ft to riglitl---Slielrlon Davis, l.uuis Nana, .lt-riuuc lla-rtz, lflizalwtli Xliiilxin. llorotliy Alves, Nlaclclim- L'ainamlm1a. .lril rim llcft to riglitl- licrtrlulc llulurlc, ,lunc l'crry. PORTUGUESE CLUB A comparitively new organization, the Portuguese Club, has grown in leaps and bounds since its establishment in the school in 1944. Mem- bership is limited to Portuguese speaking students only, but despite this fact, the club is one of the most popular in the school. Up until recently, its activities were confined to discussions on Brazil and Portu- gal, and to small social gatherings, but with the larger enrollment this year, the club has been able to carry out a more pretentious program cul- minating in the formal May Ball held on April 26. A committee headed by Edmund G. Rose was formed to stimulate correspondence between students of this school and of various schools in Brazil. 119 lst row. left tu right-Josie NYalsh. FRENCH CLUB The French Club is composed of a group of girls who are interested in the customs and language of the French people. At their regular meet- ings every Thursday, the girls take an active part in games, in dramatizing plays, and in conversing and singing in French. This year, the club has adopted a 13 year old French girl who lives in Paris. The member pledged to send, with the aid of the French classes, two packages a month for one year. These packages are com- posed of anything of value to Monique or her family. We hope that this club will continue in their work in furthering the interests of the French language in High School and in cementing a closer alliance with the French people themselves. 121 lst ww-lilziiiie l.ipton, llolorcs Nlllfilfll. lrcm' Shea, Olga lfmiscczi. FOOTBALL With the crimson jerseys and football padding put in moth balls until next fall, the New Bedford High School gridiron team of 1945 re- tires from the spotlight of sports. Although not shown too brilliantly in the win and lost column, the squad this year was noted for its hard fight- ing and undying spirit. The team suffered five defeats to three victories and a tie. However, the tie was with Quincy High School, which ended up in second place on the class B ratings. The opening game of the season was lost to East Providence, 12-0, under the arclights of East Providence Stadium. Providence Central set the Traveling to Durfee High in Fall River, the squad came from behind to win 14-7 on a stormy day. Brockton High set the biggest defeat upon our boys, 32-12, but went on to win the class A championship. The team this year was 130 the only team from New Bedford ever to score twice upon them, and the first team of the year to score against them. Next was Quincy High, away, which was a tie game 6-6. Another Rhode Island team CCranstonj plowed through our lines to make an- other victory. The next two games were wins in the record book. They were with Fairhaven 12-6, and Vocational 13-6. A heart-breaking loss was to Durfee on Thanksgiving Day. Durfee was out-played throughout the contest, but managed to squeeze out a victory, 13-12. The Seniors on the first team were: Joseph Vieira, end, George Kuliga, tackle, Joe Carvalho, back, Don Calnan, center, George Ripley, back, and Dick Turner, tackle and captain. Joe Vieira was a brilliant and tough end for the squad. This was his first year in that position, and he proved his ability as a good athlete. just ask the Quincy team what they thought of Joe! He was usually the fifth man in the opponent's backfield. Don Calnan was another tough boy to stop. Playing center, he was chosen one of the finest in the county. He made the Bristol County All-Star Team at center. This was his first year at center and the team was lucky to have such a fine fellow. George Kuliga Cone of the biggest fellows on the teamj filled out a tackle position. This was his second year of varsity ball, and he came back this year to play a bang-up job at his position. George Ripley was a backfield man. He plowed and dug with everything he had when he had the ball. He is a swell fellow and a great asset to the team. joe Carvalho, another back, was one of the fastest men in the team. Breaking his collar bone, early in the season, he didn't play very much. Credit must be given him for setting up the first T. D. in the first Durfee game. This gave us the will to fight, and go on to win. Dick Turner held down the other tackle position. He played three years of varsity ball, and two years on the first team. He captained the team in his senior year and was chosen as a tackle and co-captain of the Bristol All-Star Team. CP.S. ruggedlll Credit must be given also to other seniors who helped keep the first team in shape, but who shared little of the true glory. Tom Mullins, a center, Morris Lawrence, end, Al Ponte, tackle Cthe biggest boy on the teamjg and Gilbert Bandarra, guard. The Seniors appreciate the hard work of their head coach, Mr. Win- ston Dodge, and line coach, Mr. Raymond O'Leary, and wish the team next year and years to come--THE BEST OF LUCK! 131 lfmiil row. BASKETBALL TEAM The basketball team that represented New Bedford High during our last year was a fine one. The Red and White hoopsters finished the season with a record of 12 wins and 5 losses, and were invited to the Tech Tournament held in Boston. The senior class was well represented on this team. More than one-half of it was comprised of seniors namely: Joseph Camacho, Joseph Perreira, George Ripley, George Kuliga. James Penler, Anthony Karalekas, and Raymond Schofield. Joe Camacho was a regular forward and one of the leading point getters on the team. Joe had a deadly eye from all angles of the floor and he collected his points with one handers, set shots, or layups with equal ease. Joe also was as deadly as they come on foul shots, and in addition he was one of the better ball handlers on the team. joe Perreira the shortest but also the fastest member of the squad was the other starting forward. joe was the best ball handler on the team and he helped the team to settle down when the going got tough, it seemed that joe was all over the floor at once and he repeatedly stole the ball from opposing players. Joe wasn't one of the scoring giants but he always managed to score a basket when needed. Joe scored most of his points with an accurate set shot from the side of the court. It appears joe was also the most popular player with the fans. 132 Next is George Ripley a fellow who also played some football and baseball for New Bedford High. George started some of the games at forward, and he saw action in most of the seasons games. George played a good steady game and always managed to get his share of the points. "The Ripper" is always a good man to have around in any game. Big George Kuliga saw quite a bit of action at center. George was one of the tallest men on the team and while he was in there you can be sure he grabbed his share of the rebounds. George got most of his points from under the hoop and by pushing in rebounds. George always turned in a creditable game at center. james Penler was a forward who did not see as much action as some of the other fellows, but who always turned in a fine game when he had the chance to show his ability. Jimmy had a good eye and would have gathered more than his share of the points if he had been given the chance to play more. Anthony Karalekas saw some action at center during the season. Anthony worked well off the boards and his opponents never ran wild in the scoring column. Anthony always played a steady game when he was in there. Raymond Schofield was a reserve guard. Ray when he was in there was the boy who brought the ball out of the backcourt and set up the scoring plays for the other fellows. Ray was a dependable guard who always showed up well when he played. SCORE OF THE SEASON'S GAMES New Bedford Taunton New Bedford Barnstable Brockton New Bedford New Bedford Attleboro New Bedford Alumni Vocational New Bedford New Bedford Barnstable New Bedford Brockton New Bedford Durfee New Bedford Quincy Quincy New Bedford Attleboro New Bedford New Bedford Fairhaven New Bedford Vocational THE SEASON'S HIGHSPOTS New Bedford had little trouble with Taunton in the first game winning 49-27 as Joe Camacho led the scoring parade with 15 points. In their second meeting however it was a different story and it wasn't until the final seconds of the game when Joe Perreira stole the ball and dropped in a layup that New Bedford was assured of the victory 30-29. Barnstable, accustomed to their own small court, gave the Crimson hoopsters quite a tussle in the first encounter, but with joe Camacho scoring 16 points New Bedford came out on top 44-40. On our own court Barnstable succumbed easily 58-32. New Bedford defeated Durfee handily 37-24 here at home, but at the Fall River Casino Durfee edged us out 29-27 when they scored on a hope shot in the fleeting seconds of the contest. It was Joe Camacho's 14 points that kept New Bedford within striking distance throughout the contest. 133 New Bedford lost their first encounter to Quincy 28-20, but gained revenge 38-26 as Joe Camacho and joe Perreira led the attack in the sec- ond meeting with 14 and 7 points respectively. Attleboro, who had another great team, lost to New Bedford 34-32 in the County Street gym, but in Attleboro they defeated New Bedford 38-28. In this second game it was Joe Camacho's 11 points that kept New Bedford as close as they were, for several times Attleboro threat- ened to turn the game into a rout. Both games with Vocational were thrillers. The first game was de- cided in an overtime period and the second game was decided by a foul shot scored with only eight seconds remaining. joe Perreira was the outstanding player for New Bedford in the first contest, Joe turned in his finest game of the season contributing 8 points and playing a great fioor game. But after leading most of the way the Red and White went down to a heartbreaking defeat 41-39. New Bedford turned the tables in the second encounter by overcoming a half time deficit of 10 points and coming on to win 35-34 in the last 8 seconds. joe Camacho scored heav- ily in both games, racking up a total of 21 points. NEW BEDFORD HIGH WINS EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THE SCHOOUS HISTORY New Bedford High's underdog basketball team surprised even their most ardent fans by upsetting the pre-tourney favorites three times in succession and coming on to win the tournament in an impressive fash- ion. In those three games New Bedford looked better than they had at any other time during the season. New Bedford eliminated a favored Attleboro team 40-25. After Attleboro had led 19-17 at half time the Red and White Hoopsters came back in the last two periods to run away with the game. In this game many believed they played their best ball of the tourney. They passed well, had control of the backboards, broke up Attleboro's attack as well as defense, and simply ran rings around their Bristol County rivals. Seniors Joe Perreira and joe Camacho were the stars of the night. Little joe Perreira, the smallest player on the floor, got the majority of the re- bounds, intercepted Attleboro's passes, set up his own teammates, and dropped in 8 points, the second highest total for the night to complete his night's work. Joe Camacho led the scorers on both teams by dropping in 6 one handers from all angles of the floor and then adding two foul shots for a grand total of 14 points. In the second contest Captain John "Chick" Langlois stole the show when he dropped in a sensational one-hander from the side of the court with only 12 seconds remaining to give New Bedford the victory 34-33. Perreira played another great floor game and Camacho was the high scor- er on both teams for the second straight night with 13 points. Somer- ville, the defending champions, were not as tough as figured and New Bed- ford came out with the championship. Joe was the high scorer of the tour- nament with a grand total of 43 points. joe Perreira and joe Camacho were honored by being selected on the tournaments All-Star team. All the boys played great ball, and the names of the five starters Joe Camacho, Joe Perreira, George Handler, john Langlois, and Ray Blanchard as well as the names of the reserves Ripley, Lebrecque, Penler, Kuliga, Karalekas, Manning, Schofield, Haram, and Hall will long be remembered about the city of New Bedford as com- prising one of the finest teams that has ever represented New Bedford High School. Nashua of New Hampshire Downs New Bedford 32-28 in the New England Championships quarter final round A tired New Bedford High team after leading 14-10 at the half, and 22-19 at the third quarter mark succumbed in the final period to a hard fighting Nashua team 32-28. It was evident to all those present that the three tough games on Boston Gardenls spacious fioor the week before had taken something out of the players, and many New Bedford rooters be- lieved the team would have gone much farther in the tournament if they had had more rest. Nevertheless the fellows played a great game of ball, and we all have good reason to be proud of them. This team will go down in New Bedfordls Basketball History. CLASS HISTORY September 1942--the day of all days when eighth-graders were transformed into Freshmen at high school! For eight years, it had been our goal and at last we had reached it. As we climbed the steps that first morning, I'm sure that everyone who entered that door for the first time had a thrill never known before. We spent the first half of the morning in the auditorium listening to rules and regulations. Fin- ally came the calling of names and assignments to home rooms. My, what a bewildered group of Freshmen we were! The upper classmen stood around to watch us while we struggled valiantly to reach our des- tination. At the two o'clock bell, we filed out with arms laden with books. Woe is me! High school had begun and we were at last grow- ing up. Soon after our first experiences had worn off, we had our class elections. The results were: President-Thomas Reul Vice-President-Rachel Pease Secretary-Arnold Martin Treasurer-Barbara Cassidy There were many events to keep up busy that year. The junior Minute Men Organization came into being under the direction of Mr. William E. King, and sponsored a formal dance where the price of ad- mission was War Stamps, -- our first high school formal! The excite- ment and thrills for those who went to that dance! In between this and the R. O. T. C. Ball was an informal dance. The R. O. T. C. Ball is something I'm sure we will always remember. Those traditional formal dances are as much a part of the high school as the gym or the office. Our Freshman Class Party, sponsored by the Senior Girls' League, was a huge success and a good time was enjoyed by all. During the last half of our first year, our school was flying the Min- uteman Flag for 9024 monthly participation in sale of War Stamps. During the spring of that same year, we purchased twenty jeeps and we were fast becoming recognized as an outstanding school in the War Ef- fort, having organized the Victory Corps, which was a National Volun- tary Organization for secondary schools, designed to mobilize school students for more effective preparation and participation in Wartime Service. A pupil inventory was conducted, and any pupil, who satis- factorily qualified in his program of studies, extracurricular activities, war production, and community services related to the Nation's VVar Ef- fort, was accepted for general membership in the Victory Corps. To provide for the physical fitness program of the Corps, the G. A. M. S. CGirls' Auxiliary Military Servicej was organized by Col. Taliaferro, PMS 85 T of our R. O. T . C. and Miss Lord, who was sponsor of the Vic- tory Corps. Little did we think then, that our G. A. M. S. would become famous, and adopted into the curriculum on a par with R. O. T. C., nor did we realize that some of our very humble little freshmen would be- come dignified officers in the G. A. M. S. 137 After our summer vacation, we went back to school advancing to the role of Sophomores. We also found that our class had increased in numbers, for our friends from the Roosevelt and Normandin Junior High Schools had joined us. This was the year we were the ones to watch the incoming Freshmen. We had another class election with the following results: President-Francis Winiarski Vice-President-Herbert Eleuterio Secretary-Arnold Martin Treasurer-Barbara Cassidy During the fall term of 1943 the high school, through the sale of bonds and stamps, purchased one light tank which cost S45,800. Our most spectacular drive took place in the last half of our Sophomore year. We subscribed for S450,000, enough to buy a B-17 Flying Fortress. A few months ago, in a letter received from the crew, we learned that the plane was on patrol duty at Ascension Island. In April of this year, we reached our goal of 1009? weekly participation and maintained that re- cord until Christmas of 1945, thereby winning the unique distinction of being the only school in the country to attain such a record. When we returned to school in September of 1944, we were sur- prised at how fast the first two years had gone by. I imagine we were all wondering if the next two years would pass as quickly for I'm sure we were all very anxious to be "The Seniors" of New Bedford High School. This was our first experience in class election under the upper class sys- tem, in which we took out nomination papers and had a ballot election. The victorious slate of officers was: President-Andrew Conn, Jri Vice-President-Elizabeth Minkin Secretary-Florence Milman Treasurer-June Senna New Bedford High School won nationwide renown in the sale of stamps and bonds this year as in the Sophomore year. In the spring we purchased 19 ambulances, and in our latest campaign we bought twelve hospital units. Each ambulance contains our plaque and on twelve hos- pital units at Camp Edwards is inscribed the name of our school. The R. O. T. C. bought a S1,000. bond this year. It was the first school organization in the country to purchase a bond of such an amount through another school organization. Edmund G. Rose sold 122 bonds which entitled him to a 3-day cruise on the U. S. M. S. American Navigator. Before he left for Baltimore, there was a buffet luncheon at the Statler Hotel in Boston, followed by a parade and Bond Show. There were four actor sat this show - Joan Fontaine, Jane Wyman, Caesar Romero, and the Ritz Brothers. He then flew to Baltimore where he made his cruise back to Boston. 138 By this time we were grown up enough to become interested in student government and were represented in the Student Council by: Ray Chartierg Allan Rothstieng joseph Vieira, Kathleen Baker. Shall we ever forget that glorious V-E Day of May 8, 1945! We were assembled in the auditorium for an impressive ceremony, but prob- ably the deepest impression made on us was the declaration that the school was closed for the remainder of the day! During the summer vacation, V-J Day came and marked the close of the hostilities in japan. Our return to school in September marked our first high school days in which our country was not at war. At last we were Seniors! All through our high school years we had waited to be 7's and 8's but instead, we were 4's, our senior year being the lirst in which there was no mid-year graduation. The slate of officers for our senior year was: President-Charles Xintaras Vice-President-Lionel Souza Secretary-Barbara McGuiness Treasurer-Kathleen Baker We soon had our Steering Committee organized, and our Advisor's office became a very busy place, as committee meetings were frequent those first weeks. All one needed to do was to take a look in on 128 any seventh period, and there was a group of seniors busy as bees, arranging committees for Prom, Banquet, Class Book, Superlatives, etc. In due time the committees began to function, the first being the Class Book, under the able hand of our editor, Howard Dyer. Then came appoint- ments for pictures, and questionnaires, and "down paymentv deadlines. Did we ever realize seniors could have so much extra work! For the first time since the War, we were going to have a prom and banquet on two separate nights. The activities which had been discon- tinued because of the war were beginning to appear again. We had our get-together for the Senior Class in the early fall, and later the Steering Committee sponsored an informal dance, both of which were enjoyed by us all. In january, 1946, the junior Minuteman Organization was convert- ed to a peacetime program, its theme being changed to "But for the sake of Saving". Since that time it has attained high averages in the entire school, and we graduate the more thrifty, for the experiences learned through the splendid organization. Also, during our senior year our school was given a full page in the magazine, "Schools for Peace". The whole project of our Minutemen was commended for its value in training students for usual citizenship, and as a invaluable course in human re- lations. As we are about to leave our high school, we are deeply indebted to it for all the line and pleasant memories it has given us. As the years pass, our high school years will always be dear.
