This progress was not accomplished by an unorgan- ized group of people, but by an intricate system of active. brogressive citizens anxious to make New Albany lligh School and other city schools as modern and as efficient as possible. .Xt the head of the administrative system of schools are Irvin lf. Fleischer, Uscar 4 P. Bader. and li. Scott l'ickens, who comprise the Board of lfrlucation. These officials are appointed by the City Council. The superintendent of schools is, in turn, chosen by the board to be the true executive officer of the schools. llarry R. Davidson has retained this position since 1944. The task of carrying on the administrative work in the high school proper is directed by C. C. Katterjohn, principal, with the assistance of Fred Hochmeister and Miss Ftelka Rock- enbach, assistant principals. Supervision of guidance and management of social activities are the duties of Mrs. ,lessie Beard Long, llean of Girls, and Gordon Raney, Dean of Boys. 8 Senior Blotter of 19-I8 1 QV-1 MR. IRVIN F. SL'tJT'l' PIClx S 'l'z'uu.v1m'1' BQARD OF EDUCATIO This year New Albany High School has been honored with niein- bership in the North Central .-Xssociation of Colleges and Secondary Schools. This is the nation's highest educational accrediting agency. Our school is only the one hundred and sixty-third of lndiana's eight hundred high schools that has been so honored. The 1948 graduates, iornier, and future graduates can value their diplomas with just a little more pride since the school has inet the test of a detailed inspection and has been adjudged as ranking with the nation's best schools. The senior class furnished the leadership necessary to develop the student activity phase of the needed program. L'l1flC'I'ClZlS5IllCIl and classes yet to enter high school have the responsibility of keeping the student participation of the school on this high level. The Ctllllllllllllty through its school trustees has pledged the youth of the city the very best in educational opportunity by the preparation for and application of this rating. .Ks your superintendent of schools, it is my sincere hope that parents, teachers, and students will always respect and cherish this coveted honor of the school and city and see that nothing happens to lower the standards of educational opportunity in New Albany. llarry R. Their human associates, endowed with reason. seek those heights by planned work and discovery. llumanityis objectives are both ma- terial and spiritual. Thus we have the jet propelled aeroplane and the "One XYorld" idea. lligh school students seek, with the effer- vescence and imagination of youth, those heights with a desire to unshackle civilization for better living. Theirs is an ideal of service. Both instinctive nature and reasoning humanity open the way to new heights by work, both physical and mentalgone by God-planned selectivity, the other by God-given reason. of the two, reasoning hu- manity visions new heights to be attained and finds joy in the work to be done. So our student body is challenged, as each senior class passes from our school, to reach for those heights their former school mates thought were beyond reach. May each senior be inspired by school-day ideals to carry to new heights in service and in work their material and spiritual desires for a better society among world nations. University C. C. Such xvas the case this year. Three XYranglers took parts in the play. and numerous others helped back stage. ln return, the girls are asked to help plan a spring formal for both clubs. XYrangler members also plan and present an amusing pep session on the day of the Jettersonville-New .Xlbany basketball game. XYranglers participate in the Speakers-XYrangler cup contest, which is held every spring. There is an age-old rivalry between Speakers and XYranglers to gain possession of the gold cup. C lnce a year students prepare speeches on some phase of social science and present talks before the school. Speeches are judged by several prominent men of New Albany, and the winner has his name engraved on the cup which is kept in the trophy case in the main hall. This contest is open to any member of the sehool. but the rivalry is strongest between members of the tvvo clubs. XYranglers' purpose is to promote public speaking by participation in debates, speech contests. discussions. and other worthy functions of the school. The membership is limited to tvventy-live members, and all members must have an .X or l-3 average in lfnglish and history. The following officers for the past year were: president. XYilliam Boaz: vice-president, blames Ilroxvn: secretary. Carl Blackg treasurer, Steven Michel: sergeant-at-arms, ,lack Trinkle.
