CLASS HISTORY Twelve long years ago, many thousands of little men donned their long trousers and as many little women their best dainty dresses: after receiving a goodbye kiss from mother, they trudges off to the neighbor- hood school. So begins the story of the twenty-four little men and women who entered the Nevis School way back in 1936. They were Norman Demmon, Raymond Demmon, Norma Hanson, Alton Hensel, Willard Hensel, Arthur Lovik, Donald Nielson, Veronica Therault, Joan Thoreen, Beverly Wambolt, Carol Haider, Einar Husby, Darlene Jacobson, Keith Jacobson, Elaine Otteson, Alice Shortridge, Duane Palmer, Verona Westvik, Charles Lepo, and Clarence l-loverstein. After eight years of grade school only six of those who had started their search for knowledge at Nevis remained. But as members of the class left Nevis, during those grade school days, many more came to fill their places. The High School Assembly doors were opened in 1944 to an anxious little group of Freshies, among them Marlyn Avenson, Kenneth Fairchild, Elaine Otteson, Beverly Wambolt, Orville Sullivan, Gerald Laughlin, Paul Case, David Case, Robert Burch, Clifford Thronson, Duane Carlson, Muriel Dudley, Donald Nielson, Nola Williams, Annie Kovach, Dorothy Hitchcock, Clarence Young, Willard Hensel, Arthur Lovik, and June Davis. After a few weeks of getting acquainted with new students and all those windows in such a big room, the fresh settled down to a reasonable peaceful studious life. The sophomors became extremely anxious to exercise some of the terrible tortures they had dreamed of and so the big event of the year, Freshman Initiation, came into view. The usual Primost treatment, the baby act with a well-balanced formula containing pickle juice, and the many hideous shades of make-up made the Freshrnen anything but green. The year quickly disappeared into the past and during a short three months summer vacation, the green faded away and the class of '48 returned to Nevis High School as sophomores: now it was their turn to initiate the freshmen. It was also this year that many of them began to appreciate high school life. Many of them entered into school activities and were inspired by the juniors and seniors. They were not long in studying English II, geometry, modern history, and biology for the nine months as sophomores were soon past and they then inherited the responsibility of being juniors. In the third year of high school, class members were active in every activity. Dramatics became important for this year, the play, The Great Ben Allah. was very successfully presented. The Junior-Senior Banquet, sponsored by the class, was graciously re- ceived by the seniors of '47.
