JONES THF SCHOOL BOARD is the official ruling body for the en- tire school system. Monroe is one of three cities in the state liavinfg ii city school system. Decisions of the school board are carried out by the City Sup- erintendent of Schools. Mr. Van Odom The board normally meets once a month in a business session, and special meetings are called if important business requires such a meeting. Members of the board are elected by the people. MRS. ANNA GRAY NOE C1 'M L QAUL NEA yvfmvlifaf gi , xi The 1956 Monroyan is a fine tribute to the sponsor and staff members who published the book. Memories recorded by word and picture will be cherished by all students in the years to come as they recall the events of this school-year. We believe the lessons of citizenship learned in cooperating to make our school projects successful justify the efforts expended. I am sure I speak for everyone at Neville when I say the work of everyone who made this book possible is deeply appreciated. PAUL J. NEAL, Principal 37S'.S'1lS'fdI2f ?f'1k2C1jJaf DOROTHY A. HODGE A. Spec Lewis was on the bench, but Gene Howard replaced him with hard running all night. The only score of the game came when Terry Reexes, on a hand-off from Elton Upshaw, ran 87 yards to the Rebels' four, then Howard went around right end to score. Billy King's toe pushed the ball across the uprights for the point. NIEVILLE 54, BASTROP 24 Playing their second game for the 1955 season, Neville defeated the Bastrop Rams by a score of 54-24. Elton Upshaw scored twice, and Spec Lewis, Billy King, and Tom Causey each scored one apiece. XVilliam Ragan and Billy King each kicked two extra points. The Ram scores came from twin brothers, Bill and Bob Loftin, who each scored twice. Their extra points were all no good. MICKEY YERGER. Back DAN KEl'l H. Ciuartl NEVILLE 26, MARION 6 The Tigers came back from Winnfield with their spirit unbroken, and trounced Marion of Lake Charles. Bill Ragan filled the shoes of Elton Upshaw by storing two TD's on his quarterback sneak. Billy King and Gene Howard accounted for the other two. The educated toe of King found the mark again, and made two points. NEVILLE 27, JONESBORO-HODGE 13 Neville won this double-A conference game by expert playing on the part of Upshaw, who ran for three TD's. He passed the other to Clausey, and King made three of his four tries for the extra point. Extra-good performances were turned in by Arant, Anderson, Lewis, Howard, Cerniglia, Stephens, Ragan, Reeves, Yerger. Torrans, johnson, Bassett, Brinson, Altick and Sparks. f 1 L i- i - 1 4 ' F- ,L . , , .,,, Q L, , .-. 'X '5 " H . ' V I rf' 5 .. . Qs. - ,,.j LARRY REEVES. ROBERT DRAPER liick ' 4 ,, A5 SEMI-lfINALS NIZVILLIZ 26, DeRlDDl2R 7 Neville traveled to Dellidder after the Bossier game, taking 15 bus-loads of Tiger lans. The Tigers were hardly "in the game" during the first half, except for an initial offensive effort when they moved 80 yards on 12 runs, but failed to score. The rest of the first half was spent in Tiger territory with Adrian Vaughn scoring and Gary Crow kicking the extra point. But the second half was "all Tiger." Lewis carried the ball to the Dragon 10, and Robert Draper carried it over on two plays. Kings kick was blocked. Seconds later, DeRidder ,fumbled on its own 49, Draper carried twice to the 20, and three plays later, with the help of Lfpshaw and Lewis. Draper scored. Again the kick was no good. In the fourth quarter, Draper carried the ball from the 50 to the DeRidder nine, and Lewis scored. This time, Kings point was good. Minutes before the game ended, Lewis intercepted a pass and romped 45 yards to pay dirt. Kings kick was good, to end the game. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS NEVILLE 27, RESERVE 1-1 Neville went to its first State Championship with a victory over Reserve in South Louisiana. Again the Tiger fans went with the team in chartered buses. The game was hard-fought for by the Tigers, but the running of Bassett, King, Reeves, Lewis and lipshaw was the margin of victory. The game started with the Wildcats kicking off to Neville. Lewis picked up the ball on the 10. returning it to the 31. A series ol runs ended up with the loss of the ball on downs. George Terrio, carrying the ball for Reserve, raced for a TD, and Darrel Catoire kicked the point. In the second quarter, the Wfildcats scored again, with Nemour Delaneuville crossing the goal line from the five. Catoire's kick was good. The Bengals roared back when Upshaw threw eight yards to Bassett, who went 59 yards to score, but Kings kick was no good. The Tigers really broke loose in the third period. Anderson kicked off for the Tigers, and Terrio picked up the ball on the 10. Bill Burroughs nailed him on the 21, and jim Altick recovered a fumble on the Reserve 19. L, Mcflonathy and Coach Charles Brown, and maintained its hold on the Louisiana "AA" Baseball title. Neville was the defending champion from the previous year. jim Altick and Terry Reeves pitched the Tigers to the finals victory over Reserve with 3-0 and ll-0 shutouts, respectively. But one might add that Altick and Reeves pitched the Tigers all the way to victory, with the support of able batters and fielders growing along with their control and effec- tiveness. ,L 19,55 cgeason 122 ffeolew lEDITOR'S NOTE: As usual, the annual must be published before the season begins for the current year.
