Greek Chronology Both Ancient and Modern In the early autumn of 1924 fparaphrase, 1200 B. CJ there swept down upon the civilization of Achea-N. H. S., to be exact-a horde of wild, uncultured, bar- barians gathered from the ends of the unknown. They either completely oblit- erated or changed the ancient civilization so markedly that this is an important epoch in the history of Achea. These wild tribesmen were at first without a form of government, virtuafly the ideal anarchy, where everything seemed to conform with the most theoretical of anarchists. As time passed, however, these tribesmen began to assimilate the rudi- ments of what nowadays is termed civi1ization.', During the passage of 600 years fSept., 1924-Sept., 19251 or about 600 B. C., these Greeks nad perfected a democracy. To the wise and diplomat.c Clisthenes lCharles Baker! and his corps of efficient generals is due chiefly the splend.d re- sults accomplished in this Era. These Greeks-or as they were later called, Athenians-waged a decisive war with the Persians fClass '27J and in the bat- tle of Salamis fClass Playb won the Class Play Banner. Later another of the illustrious Athenians, Pericles, rose to power. During this reign much was accomplished, although there were no outstanding victories or triumphs, save one. The Spartans fClass '29J were defeated in the battle of Leuctra lClass Play '2'7J and the Athenians added another Class Play Banner to their increasing Laurels. Another triumph for these hardy fighters was the Per- sians' defeat in the Baseball Triangle. As a final triumph, there arose among these industrious tribesmen a still more important form, Alexander the Great, fClarence Oberlinj with Miss'Anna Clack as aide-de-camp. Under the competent guidance of these illustrous figures, the Greeks set out on a career of conquest. The first battle won was the decisive engagement of Issus QActivity Salej and the result was another pennant annexed to the al- ready multifarious array of Green and White. Following close on the heels of this signal victory came another, that of Ara- bela 1Open Sessionj and another trophy was added to their collection. Sometime later another battle took place and these Greeks carried off the standard bearing the Comet Sale Banner, and shortly afterward that bearing the Coffer-Miller Pennant. A singular and yet to be expected coincidence of this last Era is the fact that only one important battle was lost by these valiant fighters-and that defeat might be termed a Pyrrhic victory for the enemy because of the price it paid. Another outstanding fact about this tribe was that they ranked higher in the scale of scholarship, both individually and as a general average, than any of the tribes that immediately preceded them.
