NEOSHO was launched on.November IO, I953. af fhe Befhlehem Sfeel Company, Quincy, Mass., and was sponsored by Mrs. John S. Phillips, wife of Rearfkdmiral John S. Phillips, USN, Refired. S. A y NEOSI-lO has equipmenf and devices specifically designed for fhe rapid fransfer of pefroleum producfs and cargo fo fhe forces afloaf operafing af high speed or in bad weafher. She is equipped fo carry a cargo of 'l3O,6OO barrels of fuel oil, 48,700 barrels of aviafion fuel and 8,000 barrels of diesel oil. The defensive armamenf of NEOSHO includes aufomafic loading rapid firing guns, fogefher wifh fhe lafesf fype of devices for fheir confrol. The lafesf developmenfs in fire fighfing equipmenf are insfalled. l-ler speed is considerably in excess of previous naval ships of her fype. ln keeping wifh U. S. Navy fradifion, U.S.S. NEOSHO is namd affer fhe Neosho River which flows fhrough oil producing counfry in Kansas and Oklahoma.
