By this means we hope to show our appre- ciation for their patience and guidance through these last six years. More than any other group of people we owe our future to them. They have prepared us for the responsiblities of maturity, to be citizens of our com- munity, our nation and our world--which in this atomic age becomes more chal- lenging day by day. Head, Jon McGuire Waxed! fdmfzq 74 Om The Neodesha Blue Streaks began the 1954 football season impressively with a 31-0 victory over Sedan. The win was followed by a 13-13 tie with Burlington. The Streaks then met a drought, going winless in five games. Our boys, although laden with injuries won over Cherryvale 12-7, lost in the last few minutes to Caney 13-6, and were beaten by League Champions Fredonia, Turkey Day, to finish a long season. Injuries and tough breaks followed the Blue Streaks through- out the entire season. Only the first game of the year were the Blue Streaks able to start their "main eleven." Some Highlights for the '54 season: Art Kearns running 81 yards for the Blue Streaks first touchdown of the year, Larry Cooper's down field blocking, Charles l-lead's bone-crushing tackle to open the Sedan game, Jerry Greer's hard blocking and tackling in every gameg Danny Thomas's punt of over 75 yards against Garnettg Jack Newby's versatility, play- ing a different position in every gameg J. A. Grubb's line smashes against Bur- lington, Mike Newberry's outstanding defensive game against Fredonia, saving touchdown after touchdowng Charles Winfrey's running rom the special formation, Melvin Steele's great line play against Cherryvaleg Tom Upshaw's defense against Independence, Ken Hersh's "Never say die" spirit and hustle, And the outstanding play of two freshmen, George Weern's and Dennis Porterg Jim Dover's ability to plug up plays in the middleg Keith Goering's taking hard knocks but never com- plaining, Joe McGuire's pass interception and touchdown run in the Sedan gameg Jon McGuire's defensive tackling in the Independence game, Douglas Cvuess's blockin from the half back slot on end sweeps, Richard Talley's pass catching in the Fgredonia gameg John Davis's defense in the Independence game, Ronnie Dixon's defensive work in the Sedan game. Four boys were given special recognition at the seasons end, when the league coaches selected Jack Newby and Jerry Greer to the all star first team, while Danny Thomas and Tom Upshaw were given honorable mention. Jerry Greer and Danny Thomas were selected by the squad as co-captains for the 1954 season. , L. to R.: Newberry, Goering, Porter, Steele, Guess, Blevens, weems, Joe McGuire, Dover, Hare, Dixon, L.
