The day happened to be in the year of l95A----- and guess who the dogs were? Seems that Robert Lacy of the famous WFragrant Hog Ranch,W on which is produced that exotic perfume known as nStockyard,n had decided to invite his former inmates for a brief stay in the wide open spaces that surround Needles. A Invitations for the event were issued by his secretary Betty Lou Markham, the only gal in the class of 'LA' that mastered the strange art of writing. At the bottom of each invitation was the suggestion that each guest bring his own gasmask., The world weary guests arrived aboard the nSuperduper Chief,W which was run by the hot air belonging to famed lecturer Euel Teter. During their torturous journey they had been supplied free entertainment by concert pianist Helen Ballard, who is known professionally as NThe .Kitten at the Keys.U The gruesome group was met at the station by Chief of Police Walter Acuna, who could now toot his own siren instead of his pop's. Trans- portation to the ranch was furnished by taximan Bob Dial who's slogan was: WOn1y ten cents a mile if you ride with Dial--three cents less if your a gal and you smile.W a On arriving at the UFragrant Ranch,n the first one out of the taxi was famous cartoonist Wilford Fitzgerald who preceded to look about in hopes of finding some horrible scenery to draw, but after riding 50 miles with his former classmates, he was immune to horror. Getting out of the taxi Genevieve Grosely, who plays 3rd base for the New York Yankees, tripped and fell in a mud hole. Quick as a flash veterinarian Shirley Brewer was at her side. Finding no bones broken HDocN Brewer recommended an electric bath. But Miss Grosely flatly refused--seems she had an uncle that died from one in a place called Sing Sing. . When the gang finally maneuvered into the house it was 'time to eat. Dinner was promptly wrestled up land we do mean wrestledl by Mary Ann Kroeber--chief cook and bottle washer for Glifton's. Mary Ann was highly insulted when Howard Johnson complained about sand in his soup. He made it clear that he had come ,to see the desert, not to eat it. ' At the head of the table sat rusty haired and headed Mr. Tater. With him on his journey he had brought his mathematical prodigy, Iva Marie Porter. She had a lump on her head where Mr. Tater had helped her with her arithmetic the other night. After dinner the guests pooled their talents to put on a program that will make history as the most caloused crime since Jack the Ripper broke loose. Master of ceremony for the culture slaughter was shoe shinner Floyd Jones. You remember. Floyd Jones---the man the class of 'AA' voted Wmost likely ton ---- . They never could decide what he would be most likely to do next. He introduced Ignacio Arguelles and his dancing jumping beans, which included Helen Andrade, Margaret Lara, Ester Armenta, and Carmen Rodriquez. The gals immediately put a. motion before the house. X Jack Shuey, the poor man's Clark Gable, 'and his leading lady Barbara Jonas put on a play called ULove Flew Out the Window and the Flies Flew In,n a little offering written by freshly paroled Jo Hilligardt. Then out of nowhere came Rosemary Battlase, the female version of Frank Sinatra, to sing a song. She was accompanied on the violin by Ella Lawrence, who's version of the 'BumblebeeN ran Jack Benny stiff competition. ' To end the program Jane Qlaypool read one of her famous poems, after which she passed around free aspirin tablets. But' drama critics, Priscilla Vehlow and Dorothy English owere beyond all earthly aid. As 9 o'clock rolled around, Sunday school teacher Robert McCue suggested the class retire. Ditch digger Lueille Burwell seconded the motion. Before retiring chorus girls Mable Ford and Helen Allen tripped over and broke a water pipe while practising their latest dance numbers. Since no telephone was available on the WFragrant Ranch,U Donald Johnson, champion hog caller for California, was asked to use his lungs to summonlplumbers fro the nearby town. Plumbers John Atkins, and his assistants Don Henshaw and Max Dunn only arrived 3 hours late, and by that time star swimmers, Roberta Walthall and Corrine Crew had taught the guests to swim. That night Mrs, Brenan, world famous traveler, tried to break up a noisy card game between professional card shark Jack Carr and a few of the boys. By beating on the wall for half an hour, she finally got a ref sponse from Jack when he yelled that it was a heck of a time to be hanging pictures. - The following day, Shirley Sprague, seeing a chance to make a nickel or two, set up her moveable barber shop. As she 'was cutting Betty McCarty's hair, Emma Gene Hopkins remarked how fond the Sprague dog was of watching the process of hair cutting. To which Shirley replies Nlt ain't that, sometimes I snip off a bit of a customer's ear.n H ,--. FP-- 'S sg. CL!-XSS I-HSTORY rx il Once in the dear dead days beyond recall, that's when the class of 'LL got on the ball, that is all except the kindergarten problem child, Roberta Walthall. The original juvenile delinquent beat a path home every day at ll a.m., which was the usual time the teacher dear sent her out for talking. lt was six months before Roberta's mater caught 011' U They made their debute in the first grade, when they played the roll of pussywillows in the annual school pageant. WMarbleheadN Hilligardt who claimed that pneumonia tripped her back, was held over for a se- cond season. The second grade brought them to the beginning of their reading, writ- ing, and arithmetic days, plus' the instrumental side of things too. It seems that Mary Ann Kroeber began playingll??the violin, but after a few weeks of dreadful practice hours, her mother consented ibut glad lyl to have her give it up. It seems that quite a few of our classmates joined the '44 class in the third grade, the teacher deciding on a course of post graduate for them. This group consisted of Jack Murray, Jane Claypool, Jack Carr, Leo Booth, Robert McCue, Walter Acuna, and Euel Teter. In the fifth grade the class reached the high point of its career, when under the supervision of Mr. Rhoeling they printed that worldwide known paper WThe Desert Star.U Even though their mothers, fathers, and friends were the only ones to subscribe to it, the little darlings thought they owned the world by having a bank account--listed under the name of their secretary, Betty Lou Markham. She was the only mem- ber of the class to be able to draw money out fhmnll. The dears slaved themselves to death in the hot sun, carrying bricks to build a complete their job the next year. A play kiln, only to continue and was given on the front lawn about the dark medieval days with costumes scenery, and script, all in good old pioneer days with one. The annual pageant found them in the covered wagons land that's just what they ware, and frontier songs. They made up their own verse to HClementineW so the whole class decided to become song writers. Miss Betty Greaney, who had been their fourth grade teacher, followed the little angels to the sixth. WBig Shotsn were what they were now, so they decided to take the laws of the school in their own hands, and each member of the class became a policeman Ceveryone got a ticketl. They held regular trials after school hours and pronounced sentences on law breakers. This year, they made puppets and gave a show, invit- ing their parents, It seems that our Walt Disney the second, Milford Fitzgerald worshipped Miss Brewer, so he presented her with a bloody heart on Valentines Day.' ' ftqntii in the seventh grade they were the babies again or rather Uguinnea pigsn--as the high school decided to let them have the same teacher for four hours instead of changing classes.' Betty Lou Markham was awarded the scholarship given by the American Legion for the most intelligent girl. The great production nSecono Childhoodn was given this year. The ninth grade found them in the school activities by sponsoring the dance, with everyone checking their their shoes in another. The main Commencement dance which featured the well were all completely revived, and jumped into making money by selling hot dogs, pop, candy, and pop corn at the games. How the hot dogs were dropped on the floor, secret to all patrons. Lucille Burwell joined the marathon and ed into class activities with flying colors. The sponsors of year, mrs. brenan and mr. Teter practically beat their heads in to get those hard working juniors lkidding of coursef ready was a enter- this trying for the play UAlmost Summer.n It seems that the leading man, Floyd Jones, found it much easier to sit on the stage than go through actions until about the day of the performance. But, it turned out'a big success and was presented for an extra showing. The major event of the year featured the Junior Prom. The theme was NMoonlight and Roses,W and the gym was made into a rose arbor. Everything was hunky dory until the Wdawn broken and the desert winds came-positively wrecking the rose arbor. The grand march was led by Jack Murray, President of the class and Shirley Sprague, Queen of Prom. Euel Teter and John Atkins were chosen to go to boys state. The class swimming picnic turned out to be a land party when the pool was found dry. What a classilllllll The final event of the year was the junior-senior theatre banquet, honoring the graduates. O Their biggest and final year at N.H.S. arrived at last. The play, nThe Campbells Are Coming,N starring Barbara Jonas, brought much enjoyment. Their sneak to the Hualapi Mountains was a huge success except that Jo Hilligardt couldn't stand on her feet--so got knocked out having a good time. When it comes to beauty, Rosemary Battlase won booby-prize dress- ed in her 18th century night cap and long underwear. Iva Marie Porter, annual editor, busily worked and slaved over the seniors remarkable con- tribution to literature, WThe Mystic Mazen while class members counted her gray hairs. The uVa1entine Dayn and U3R'sU were their last two dances given for the N.H.S. student body. Like a period at the end of a sentence, class day, Baccalareate service Junior-Senior banquet, and Commencement exercises brought a close to happy memories for the class of 'AA at N.H.S.
