Foreword Progressing, grade by grade, through the formative years at Needham High, we have become aware of a priceless giftg every boy and girl possesses itg he has only to put the powerful tool to use. What is this gift? Youth: the ability to face each new challenge with enthusiasm, exuberant and irrepressibleg the strength to try again and again in spite of many failuresg the 'constant anticipation of better things. We speak, of course, of youthful spirit, for physical youth fades slowly into age. Youth of spirit is a tool which grows keener with use, an eternal gift. We have it, every one of us, and now we must use itg we must never let it tarnish. 'ew I va n: ' Q e i We W -Jr 5 Dedication This book is dedicated to MRS. Thanks for coming, Heidi... The Exchange Student Program, spon- sored by the Needham Exchange Club, selected as an outstanding delegate of German youth Heidi Leonhardt. Upon her arrival in America, Heidi joined the Huse family and in the fall entered Needham High School as a Senior. A skilled violin player, Heidi was an active member of the school orchestra. Her friendly ways soon endeared her to the student body. Heidi's informative discussions of Ger- many have inspired the Needham youth with a widened appreciation of democracy. We will remember Heidi for her quiet humor, friendly smile, and the bridge which she has helped to construct between the youth of two nations. Marini Although the boys from Needham were not the champs, the 1958 football season was successful in fac- tors other than actual victories. Under the coaching and patience of Mr. Parmigiane and Mr. Maloney, the boys practiced hard and played hard, not only to win but also to play a fair game. Vic- tories over Dedham, Lexington, Walpole, and the tie with Braintree cheered the team and its loyal followers. Wellesley had a hard tussle at the Thanksgiving game and was victorious over the Needham squad by only one point. This year's varsity basketball team did not have an exceptional season, but Coach Johnston is looking for- ward to a strong team next year. The original team consisted of eight juniors and four seniorsg but sick- ness interfered, reducing the original twelve to as few as nine. The co-captains, Bill Chubbuck and Jim French, provided a reliable core for the team, with Bill con- tributing generously to Needham's points, and Jim putting up a strong defence. One of the most spectacu- lar games of the year was Needham's victory over Norwood, then foremost in the Bay State League. The Rockets held the lead throughout, and fans will remember the excitement and joy of that game. With forceful spirit and brilliant individual plays, the team proved worthy of the support and enthusiasm of the students. Don t Let Go Fzrvt Ron K Ter Veen, D. Wylte. B.
