class assignments and acquainting ourselves with our teachers for the new year. As always there were many new faces and many new friends to meet as well as the old, familiar ones we had not seen in three months. All of these and other happy, sad, and unforgettable memories make complete the chapter in our lives of our Senior Year. Hardly had we entered school than a most excit- ing event occurred for all of us-the iirst football game. Operation Spirit was in full force as many of us made Greensboro our destination. There we watched the Caps walk off with all the honors of the victorious. It wasn't long after this night that Devereaux Meadow was packed with practically the entire student body for the first home game. The cheerleaders and the team really got the sea- son off to a good start with the help of screaming students who were really behind our boys in pur- ple and gold. This year we were proud to have eight of the nine cheerleaders from our class. This group of girls did one of the best jobs of supporting Operation Spirit that has ever been done. Our hats are off to you, girls! After many of the football games we attended open houses at White Memorial and the church of the Good Shepherd. Whether the game was a victory or a defeat, everyone was there eating, dancing and just having fun. There are many things that we remember about football season. One of the highlights of the sea- son was homecoming. Everyone enjoyed the big parade with the decorative Hoats and cars and the half time ceremony with our beautiful sponsors Bellamy Hamilton, Vicky Martin, Mary Helen Barden, Sharon Cates, and Jane Jordon. l HENRY NEWTON . . . All-American 149 STEVE WHITE . . . Lassitter Memorial Award 1956 The pep rallies this year were all great suc- cesses. The energetic cheerleaders along with the circus band led everyone in the pre-game warm- ups which put us in high spirits. They did not cease with the end of football season but continued throughout basketball season. Also to be recom- mended were the high-stepping majorettes and the Marching Hundred which provided wonder- ful entertainment at the games. As football season got underway, so did the new fall and winter fashions. This year the style was crew-neck sweaters, pleated skirts for the gals and cardigan sweaters for the young gents along with ivy-league, ivy-league, ivy-league!! Some of the people who kept their wardrobe up-to-date with these fashions were Betsy Stevens, Warren Norman, Carey Dowd, Kitty Powell, Peggy Boone, Henri Fisher, Roland Noblin, and Linwood Ride- out. It was during the Fall that the Asian flu made its appearance with a 21 gun salute at Broughton. In many of the rooms only a very few desks were occupied, teachers taught half-empty classes. About one-half of the Senior class was out at one time or another with the dreaded flu. Even when the ailing students did return to school, talk about the symptons, reactions, and cures were the topic of many conversations for quite a while. Another subject which always "holds its own" in conversation from September until May is teachers. This "gossip" is usually carried on by seniors since they seem to have the hardest teach- ers and courses. Mrs. Peacock leads the line with Miss Runnion, Mrs. Fonville, and Miss McDear-
