What kind of car made that winding path in the snow coming from a northeasterly direction?Only one car it could he - Mr. !3uck's green Volvo. Now whose flashy Ambassador is that parked under the Spanish Room window? Who else could it belong to but our Spanish teacher, Mrs. Langley ? Good heavens! Are all those people getting out of that Volkswagen? No need to be alarmed-it's not a car with a false bottom-it's just Mrs. Cochran and her passengers. Wow! Who does that stunning red convertible be- long to? Must be Mr. Bartlett's turn to drive, as it appears Mr. Dunn's "ole" Ford isn't around. That light blue Ford-which one of the teachers in the car pool does it belong to?Let's see. Last week was Mr. Atencio's turn so this week it must be Mr. Ristad's turn. Well, guess that completes the run down on our faculty. Oh! Oh! Now, who in the world is that in that bright red Alfa Romeo arriving late for school? Nat- urally it is our "Santa Claus," Mr. Roberts. Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Wilson had the questionable honor of planning, preparing and serving meals five days a week. When you stop to consider What a difficult task it is to prepare meals for one family, you certainly can ap- preciate What our cooks must go through everyday. All of us frustrated cooks are envious of Mrs. Riley's and Mrs. Wilson's Wonder- ful ability and patience. Mr Davis Mrs, Riley L X Mrs, Wilson "Neither rain nor sleet nor hail or snow can stop the mailman," is a familiar saying. We in Nederland have found out that it applies to school bus drivers too. Mrs. Schamens driving the bus to Tungsten, Mr. Slaughenhoupt driving to Sugarloaf, and Mr. Gardner driving to Coal Creek adher- ed faithfully to this rule. Some- how they managed to get through when some of us couldn't even get our cars out of the yard. As Mr. Davis could no doubt tell you, being custodian for a school is not all fun and frolic. Just when it ap- pears you have everything done -you find that some lit- erary genius has decided to write his masterpiece on the walls or on the desks. Before coming to Neder- land Mr. Davis was custo- dian at Fairview School in Boulder. Dwight Hight and Chuck McComb were not present when the school photographer was taking pictures. The juniors had many activities during they e a r. Toward the end of the first nine weeks another boy, Fred Weaver, came from Denver, but left within two weeks. The class officers were Karen Braun,Dave Foster, and Rod Glasser, holding the positions of President, Vice-President, and S e c r e t a ry - Treasurer, respectively. The Student Council representatives were Tanny Sherwood and Chuck Wise, with Carolyn Prime serving as alternate. In 1960 this group proved themselves to be workers outside of class and showed a con- siderable improvement in scholarship. The same basic group is back this year along with one addition - Paul Ryplewski. The sponsor says, "The majority of my kids are suffering from a very acute case of 'Freshmanitisf This s evere malady has caused a general slump in grades and the resultant curtailment of activities." Though there is no known cure for "Freshmanitis," the fatality rate is very small. They are looking forward toapros- perous sophomore year with a much more mature group. This year brought five new additions: Harold Paul Ebersole, Bruce McComb, Richard Payne, Kent Braun, and Janice Davis. It is doubtful if some of the eighth grad- ers could have done their homework without the aid of Alexander Graham Bell'sinvention. Why didn't they also learn to use Dewey Decimal System? The day before term papers were due, you should have seen the library! It was total chaos. New teachers, homework, bus schedules, and just good old growing pains added to the confusion of the already confused eighth graders. In spite of these factors they had a good year. , STANDING: Bob Grant, Mike Lougee, John Slovek, Ron Richards, Bobby Williams, Gordon Wise, Harold Paul Ebersole, Rusty Berni, and Mr. Bartlett. What a year this was for 4 and 5 year old children! One hour classes quickly increased to half-day sessions. The children were arriving at l and leaving at 3:30 by Gctober lst. Among the many things the children are expected to learn throughout the year are social habits-considering the rights of others, "taking turns," politeness and cheer- fulness. Work habits as well as skills are "required sub- jects," Willingness and eager- ness do not have to be taught and these traits are charming assets to this newest class in Nederland School. The first year of school is always memorable because it is the beginning of a new life forachild. Instead of being home each day he is now on his own-meeting people, making new friends, learning to read and count and to say his A,I3,C's. He now can take home drawings and school papers to show progress in these accomplish- ments. Mrs. Murphy worked with the children on readiness and in the pre-primer until Christmasg then the remain- der of the year was spent on tI1e primer and the first reader. She has been pleased to have the children's parents see the school in action and discuss the in- dividual's success or problems throughout the year. s 0- f QV gi ii. t . it 'wr funn? The eleven students made quite a rambunctious and en- ergetic group. When they started something they were determined to finish it, wheth- er it be homework or a feud with a fellow student. No doubt, the year'smost memorable events centered around learning about the world and its people. Interest in this subject began with writ- ing letters to children in for- eign lands, continued through films and books, and from all appearances there is no end to their interest. ,iv 5. 3 ffl C5 O, ' RL ...M D M . A total of 12 points separated the Panthers from the Winning team in the lastllgames. This year's team was one which possessed a better balanced ball team than any other team in the league. They could outscore any team in the league at any given time, but were hampered throughout the season by inconsistent play. S.. One might call our Junior High Basket- ball Team "the small hut mighty." ln regular conference play they were 4 for -l going into the tournament. Up the tournament ladder went the cubs until the final rung where they were knocked off by Bennett. We would like to congratulate Coach Dunn and his charges forafine season. The Panther track team is preparing for its 4th track crown in that many years. Crowl- ing and straining, the Panthers will strive to do their best in their own category. The twirlers were led by sponsor, Mr. Jeffrey, and head twirler, Harriet Richards. The most memorable events for the twirlers were their appearances at football homecoming, band day, and basketball homecoming. The choir this year met on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you happened to visit the choir, you'd have found Mr. Jeffrey trying desperately to get the altos to harmonize with the basses. ln spite of all their prob- lems the choir did manage to sound like a choir before the year was over. On October 5, 1961, they played host to the first League Student Council Meeting of the school year. Mike Riley was elected president of this league organization in May, 1961. The theme for this meeting was, "Student Council, Are You Alert, Alive, and Interested?" It was a great success. Since student council was organized two years ago, its members arei often found with their noses in the book called "Roberts' Rules of Or er." Not only has the council performed its duties well but it has accom- plished some outside projects. One of the most important projects to the students has been the equipping of the recreation room. It has been the student council's aim to voice the opinion of the stu- dent body, to better student-teacher relationship, to improve the school spirit, and to help organize class activities. They have ably achieved this goal. Our President fam fit f- vp . J 'X "SJ fe' YWW? W?2s5f:,z,w, v.,,,,, ' i '.Jt J W P r r- , .i..:- Wriir ff wk- Lf' pvgrf 0'7.',i F If sg' Q :img F? ' 5572! QFFICE PRACTICE LIBRARY The first year of Office Practicefor Nederland High School has proved to be a very worth-while class. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the exper- ience of the class and feel they have learned most of the necessary procedures for office work. The class was started in order to give practical experience to girls wishing to go into office work as a career. The librarians are responsible for keep- ing the books orderly and the Cardcatalogues Kathy Ross, Sherry Sherwood, Carolyn Sandersen, Mrs. Cochran up-to-date. This year the three librar- ians and Mrs. Cochran had ad- ditional duties in the form of 300 books given to our library. These books had to be cata- logued, covered, and put on the shelves. With the addition of these books we now haveaWell-bal- anced library for the students. The librarians also catalogued books for the grade school li- brary, thereby making it eas- ier to find a specific type of book. 42 Y' 1 f '--' H5315 Q , 4 'WAMK M I -W -QA ' g y if . ,. ,K sux: fi! !
