Looking Back ... In the fall of 1958, Suzanne McDonald Brunken was a Freshman at NC. We interviewed her to find out just what being a Freshman twenty-five years ago was like. She said because the classes were so small they didn’t do a lot as individual classes, but as a school. Some of the activities she remembers include picking up corn, dressing up for banquets, and going to a big trackmeet out of state. Kids in all classes were treated the same. No one was really considered an “upper” or “lower”’ classman. It was like one big family. Suzanne was the only off-campus student that year, but she was included in most of the dorm activities anyhow. The rules were different than those now. Makeup and slacks weren’t allowed. There was no dating and dresses had to touch the floor when girls knelt. Suzanne now resides with her family in Clarks, Nebraska. Being a 7th grader means that you’re expected to act more mature than the elementary kids, yet you’re not old enough to participate in the high school activities. New classes such as shop and home ec. as well as involvement in organized sports are experiences most 7th graders immensely enjoy. The 7th grade contributes a large amount of spirit and energy and is a vital part of the student body. A New Beginning Sponsored by DON LOUISE GRAHAM of GRAHAM PLUMBING, HEATING, and A.
