It is a theme that forms the basis of Christian education, for no educa- tion can be called such unless its aim is to teach the purpose of man's creation-to know, honor, and love God, the divine essence of all that is good and beautiful. During our four years at Nazareth we have been taught to seek the beauty of God in all things good-our companions, our studies and our activities. The more deeply we have ap- plied ourselves in this search, the richer we have become. Nazareth has proved to be a place of beauty, filled with beautiful lives, doing beautiful things. 5 r' at f xi-I-UMHV4 la' A L QQ 6, 366 V, box D ' - ' P I N 0 U IE S T 0 F I N F I N I T E B E A U T Y E dedicate our 1949 Lantborn to the Divine Presence in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. It is here that we find the Infinite Beauty of our quest-a beauty which neither the mind of a Thomas Aquinas can fathom nor the pen of a Paul can express. It may be from the daily voice cultures classes or the weekly practice of the orchestra or of the band. It is here we first learn that Christmas is just around the corner, or that some patriotic program will soon delight us in the auditorium. This year many a musical eaves- dropper listening to the catchy songs of Gilbert and 62 Sullivan's illiiadn, often carried the melody audibly to other parts of the building despite the rule of silence in the halls. Hand in hand with our music department are our dramatics and radio courses. All important events of the year are linked in some way with our dramatics classes, How we were moved by the pathos of the prison scene in illizrie Azzlffiiieffe, given on the occa- sion of Sister Hubertines name day, and in the Christmas playl How we enjoyed the humor so well- enacted in the .llihidn and in the senior play, Austin Goetz's .Siwzyg nj' My 1'Ie.1rl.' Truly nothing pleases us more than when a poster or the public address system announces that the dramatics classes are about to entertain us again. On three different occasions during this year for six consecu- tive Saturdays our radio classes have broadcasted on the Catholic Youth Program over WRNY. They named their series Hour They .Het which centered about the meeting of certain great men and women and which portrayed how the sanctity of one influ- enced for good the character of the other. XX'e be- came more fully acquainted with such interesting peopleg as, Francis Thompson, whose great poems would probably never have become known but for his meeting with the Meynellsg Theophilus, one of the great saints of pagan Rome, whose conversion to Christianity would never have taken place, had not St. Dorothy showed him the truth, and St. Mary Passing through Senior Hall, we come upon a room into which many like to enter and just look around. It is the art room. Here on the walls are portraits of students-recognizable, too-snowy and sunny landscapes, colorful interiors, and still life groups, done in a variety of media. From these wall exhibits a number were sent to the Regional Scho- lastic Art Exhibit. Two received the scholastic gold key, and several were awarded honorable mention. The ceramics and crafts classes also produce many interesting articles, many of which show real talent. Gay colored figurines, bookends, tea tiles, creamer and sugar sets made in our ceramics class, while woven guest towels, jewelry, toys and puppets pro- duced in our crafts class, make up some of the en- Magdalen, whose meeting with the risen Christ forms one of the most loving and consoling meet- ings of all history not only for the penitent Mag- dalen but also for all mankind. These were some of the broadcasts we listened to so proudly over our radios. gaging projects. These, therefore, are Nazareth's gifts to her talent- ed students-in fact, her gifts to all who, although not gifted in these arts, wish to learn something of the world's culture. Q-.5-5 x, 1 ,il Gur Spicy Clubs Have you ever bitten through the flaky crust of a piece of tempting apple pie only to find that the plump well-sweetened fruit, nestling within that crust, was sadly lacking in flavor? XY'ithout that dash of spice to set off its goodness, a pie just doesn't come up to expectation, so in the sweet, wholesome apple pie of our school life just the right amounrof spice is added in the form of various club activities Many of our clubs, the GeMaryan and our lan- guage clubs, give us a sympathetic insight into the lives and customs of people of other lands. Imagine actually seeing movies of Princess Elizabeth's wed- ding, for the famous home of William Shakespeare, or receiving a letter from a penbpal, announcing her intention to visit the United States, whose beauty we have been vainly trying in letters to describe. These are some of the interesting minutes recorded by the secretary at the GeMaryan club meetings. If it's travel we want, we may board the magic carpet of Nazareth's language clubs to places far away. From the pleasant Bonjour, ma wear of the French club to the last Bueuar mrder of the Spanish club we are carried into an atmosphere, peculiar to the country in which each language originatedf-fan atmosphere where familiar food on menu cards takes on strange names, where our boy friend becomes Pierre. Carlos, or Pasquale, as he escorts us to a gay and happy fiesta, to a Valentine party with refresh- ments strictly ltalian, to a birthday celebration in honor of Virgil, or to the humorous French play llnlveu flve Crzlfr Army, Ike Alice lluill Play, in French, of course. As we Finish our tour, we realize that, besides giving us enjoyment, our clubs are also furnishing us with a better understanding of the cul- ture these people have given to the world. There are other clubs which bring us nearer home, in fact, what club could be more intimately con- nected with the home than a hobby club? It is this club that solves our leisure-time problem. Here we learn many worthwhile pastimes, both from exhibits of student members and from adult hobbyists who have shown us at our meetings valuable collections of stamps, patchwork quilts, plaster-of-paris models, and jewelry, made of tiny colored shells. Truly many interesting evenings could be spent on hobbies such 35 these. Mciry's Doy Each year when the first shy spring flowers, the caressing breezes and the cheery calls of returning birds herald the coming of spring, we at Nazareth look forward to one of the best loved of all our school events. the beautiful ceremony in which Our Blessed Lady is crowned Queen of the May. Last year this eagerly awaited day was started, as revered custom specifies. with a Pontifical High Mass. celebrated in the school auditorium by our bishop, His Excellency. flames E. Kearney. D.D. After thus paying tribute to her Son, the student body. our parents. our faculty. and the visiting clergy. forming the traditional May Day procession, moved slowly down the broad front walk toward Marys flower-decked altar. There, framed by the spreading trees in their fresh greenery, Our Lady stood to wel- come her children. Like some vast bouquet. the throng assembled on the broad sweep of lawn at Mary's feet--a bouquet. formed of the black and white uniformed student body. the bright blue banners of the sodality mem- bers, the white gowned homeroom representatives and Our Lady's Matron of Honor and her court, and the red-robed monsignori, with the blue and gold vestments of the bishop. and his ministers, lending the final touch of color. XWhen all had gathered, Bishop Kearney delivered an inspiring talk on our Lady and the imitation of her virtues. With the final, challenging words of his discourse still echoing across the campus. white gowned repre- sentatives of each homeroom passed to Our Lady's altar: and, one by one, each placed a single full blown rose in the vases at her feet, until she ap- peared to be standing in the midst of a circle of crim- son light. Then it was that Mary Ellen Mahoney mounted the white steps and placed upon the head of Our Lady the May crown, fashioned of the sweet- est of spring flowers. Returning to the foot of the altar, Mary Ellen led the entire assembly in recitation of the rosary, thus climaxing the days events by the presentation not only of a physical crown but also of a spiritual one, twined with aves and pater nosters, sweeter and more beautiful than the lovely May blossoms themselves. 99 Ii Q I E 3 4 1 v .1 :I 1 w Q N, XLLUAHN 9 J 'Yun O fs -e-K-. -X 4' X .- no .3 , .- L cyg : rn K- Tl X 1 ef 'lv J' 'fa . gb!
