There silhouetted against all horizons, church spires pierce the sky in silent supplication to God, for here in the Cathedral City of Rochester are over two hundred churches. Two seminaries beautifully located overlook the banks of the Genesee River. To the north along Lake Avenue boulevard is St. Bernard's Seminary for the training of Catholic youth for the priesthoodg to the south Colgate Theological Seminary for young men who desire to spread the word of God to those of other faiths. Within the city are two monasteries-one belonging to the Basilian Fathers, The Center of Catholic Rochester fOpposiIe pagej: Sacred Heart Pro-Cathedral, whence Christ's vicar, the most Reverend james E. The drawing shows the new library on the men's campus, beautifully located on the banks of the Genesee. history of Rochester, ranks high in the art, press and indus- trial circles. In addition, there are many schools devoted mainly to education along commercial lines. Supplementing all these is the beautiful Rundell Library where students have their problems solved for them and booklovers come for hours of relaxation. Sixteen high schools, whose scholarship has won ap- proval and high rating from both the Regents Board at Albany and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, seventy-two public and private schools, kindergartens, nursery schools--all have helped to build the pedestal on which Rochester's educational system rests. House of Many Friends fCenlerj: Aquinas Institute ranks high in our esteem, for Aquinas boys are our Prince Charmings at the Christmas Dance, they take the men's parts in our plays, their football games are tops, and their orchestra and hand concerts are just superb. Guardian of the Classics Uligbl drawingj: Who has not been enriched hy a visit to the Rundell Memorial Library! There among the classics we may find a novel, artistically written: a poem, woven by the Muses themselves: a play, truly holding the mirror up to nature. ,ac ..tt. 3 S FRESHMAN HONORS Freshmen s Fancy s 4 L L Ll L rxlcn Conf Be Topped n ut uwlls ot L s 1 mmm n lu Ximlyn Hmm rx XX urtz I 1 lom IXIHSIQ Sue XX lx n Lhclbln If Mm uc R3 mn Plffllld Lllllglll Nimon Hogtor Anm 'qOIhl'l1glf. flu f 4' Z 1 Yi 'W' j 'Q 'Q I - wp- Q , ., . , l I . With an Eye to the Future fCw1!erj,' A visit to France without knowing the French technique of ordering a meal may prove rather distressing. Here Carol Hetzler displays her knowledge of what is what on a French menu to Mary Ann Koerner, Helen Monteith, Clara Lanzalaco, Josephine Frisicano. and Geraldine Scalzo. Behind Sophomore Doors Time and time again as freshmen we had been warned by our superior classmen against the dangers that threat- ened us on the opposite side of those sinister doors to sophomore classrooms. Vile had taken their word in good faith. None of us possessed the curiosity attributed to the several wives of Bluebeard to look behind them. Probably we were informed more vividly of the consequences than were the unfortunate victims of Fairyland's arch murderer. Yet once we had entered, the sweetest fruit from Allah's garden could not entice us to come forth. Most enjoyable was the feeling that we were growing up. In the early fall came our own Sophomore Hop. XX'e were the senior members of the Glee Club. We were priv- ileged to try out for the varsity hockey and basketball teams. Indeed we were truly SOMEBODY behind those doors. Behind those doors in English class we walked through the quaint old village of Raveloe, came to love the lonely old weaver and the golden-haired child whose devotion more than repaid Silas Marner for all he had done for her. Playing truant, to our heart's content, we accompanied Sherlock Holmes on his thrilling sleuthing expeditions or sailed down the Mississippi with Huckleberry Finnfall without leaving our classroom. Behind those doors, of course, there was semblance of truth in the tales we had heard. There was that ogre, Geom- etry, ever leading its victims on to unsuspected pitfalls. Caesar too, was thereffaesar. resplendent in his victories over nationsfyet more victorious in his encounters with sophomores. as recorded on report cards. linglish grammar could present its own difhculties too, often enmeshing one in the brambles of split-infinitives and dangling participles. However, with a few hours of preparation, we discov- ered we could laugh geometry in the face, even make friends with Caesar, clear away the brambles and cut down the offending participles. fContinued on page 36j Behind Sophomore Doors-Continued from page 35 So passed our setontl ye.1r. I had heard it as a freshman, as a sophomore, yet when I had reached my third year at Nazareth, I found that beneath that certain exterior jollity there was a deep strain of seri- ousness. Our junior year at Nazareth, we found, could be likened to a beautifully embossed book, yet it took no David Gray- son to enlighten us that the beauty of a book was vested not in its cover but in what lay between. It was ours to make whatsoever we pleased. All through the year, there- fore, we worked toward one objective-our book was to be worthy to bear the stamp of the high principles which Nazareth sets for all her students. There were our studies. For the most of us this year meant a choosing of subjects which would help fit us for a certain career, or for higher study. There were our extra- curricular activities. In basketball, although the varsity is composed ordinarily of seniors, more than half of the 1946 team were juniors. Wliat a glorious record we madeflosing only one game! Some of our members tried out for the Bishop's oratorical contest. Of course, a senior received the award, but our speakers made a good showing and re- ceived applause which fully equaled that of the winner. We saw to that! Decorating their uniforms with gay red hearts, these live valentines serenaded the old people, whose lonely hours contain so few joys. Some of the songs brought tears to the eyes of many of the listeners, but we know they were pleased. This performance, however, was but an introduction to the momentous event of the year-their spring concert! As the strains swell to a joyous shout or fade to a reverent whisper, we know that this concert will fulfill and more than fulfill the promise of its prelude. Q. ' Jfbof 62 Up Marble Stairs to Culture Wlien Nathaniel Rochester started out over the moun- tains from Maryland to take possession of the site he had purchased in the valley of the Genesee, he brought with him a culture that was Christian. This culture led him to love all that was beautiful and gave him the desire to share that beauty with all whom he loved. Thus it was he who first led his people up the marble stairway to culture. How proud he would be today to point out our many institutions of culture to his aristocratic companions, Charles Clarroll and Williatm Fitzhugh, who accompanied him on his tirst journey to the Genesee country! One of the first of these institutions to impress them might be the Me- morial Art Gallery with its treasures of ancient and mod- ern art. Were this the time of the Finger Lakes Exhibit, many of the paintings would be the work of his own peo- ple, and justly proud he could be of them. Searching for Beauty That lnspires fllllposile pugej: The classical architecture of the Fastman School of Music of which this stairway is an example, is a memorial to its founder, George Eastman, and a monument to his memory. A Quiet Corner Where Beauty Dwells Iffeuler llfdll'fllg1.' There are many such places to be found in the numerous parks in and about Rochester, as shown in this sketch of a section of Genesee Valley Park. historical treasures that would recall something of his own day, he could visit the new Bausch Museumg or, for that expression of universal culture, he might enter the Eastman School of Music, one of the foremost schools of its kind in the country. It would be a delight for Rochester's founder and his guests to visit our numerous parks, their entrances ap- proached by miles of shaded boulevards, and lined by beautifully kept lawns, where a profusion of flowers from the first faint summons of spring until the wintry advent of the Snow King, have won for Rochester the name of Flower City. Yes, Rochester has changed since those early eighteen hundreds, but the culture which Nathaniel Rochester brought with him still remains one of the distinguishing characteristics of Rochester. Beauty Built a Bridge fCenIer1: From the beautiful lines of the Memorial Bridge one cannot help but wonder if Beauty had not held the hand of its designer. What a splendid tribute to our Rochester boys who gave their lives for their country! For Lovers of Culture fRiglJt dmuirzglx It is here in the Memorial Art Gallery that lovers of art may enjoy exhibits of ancient and modern art. One of the most popular is the annual Finger Lakes Exhibit, where the work of contemporary artists, many of them from Rochester, are chosen to be displayed. , gb sw" 63 4-x inn Q Qf' 'T SENIOR HONORS They Lead the Way mrs N I ll H y I 1 lr 1 onox m Futted for Fo me Q n ut L ollrshl u ns of 0 NIU Nims Hahn Co nw C nstxmc Costnh 111 f 1 un 'Xhm C lcsmm 'Xhryorlc XX urtz Nhrx lxu Donox in 1 1 cm btruhm Batty Wmlc om Hussc N My Bush ffm X v C9 17 'R t .ZH ,- YD '5 '- 4 Congratulations! flfzperjs As poet, orator. and historian. ylarice Kram. jean Strachan and Mary Bush respectively, receive congratulations from our Bishop for a sonnet. a speech ancl a history in honor of Na1areth's llianiontl -Iuhilee. Early in the fall they were a very bright part of the program given at the Red Wing Stadium at the Holy Name Rally, inspiring the large group assembled there with the beautiful singing of several Ave Marias. We at Nazareth were privileged to hear them in a lively operetta, Carmelila, and at their fall and spring concerts. Radio has taken their songs and carried them far over many programs on the air. Rochester has often proudly given her applause to our choir, but proud- est of all is Nazareth, to whom they belong, whose praises they sing. Perosians, we salute your smiles and your songs, but especially you, for being what you areffour beloved Queens of Melody! Our Modern Cinderellos Wfhat is so rare as a day in june-funless it's a night in Detemberf -fr-and that night a very spetial one, indeed, the night of our Christmas Dante. How like Cinderella, we looked forward to that longewished-for event! At last it came. an evening of musit and splendor. Not even Cin' derella in all her finery could outshine Nazareth's misses, when arrayed in silks, tatfetas and soft chitfons, we grace- fully glided into .1 fairyland all our ownva land of tor- sages. of shy silentes. and of lively thatter. To the musit of lark Ends orthestra our slippered feet kept beat with hearts that were truly young and gay. And when that happy evening had tome to an end, there was no need of pumpkin coaches to carry us home. We were whisked away in taxis. thoughtfully provided by our mod- ern Prime Charmings.
