We also gain one full dcgf as we cross the International Date line. 24 April, Chaplain is returned to TOWERS via Highline. 27 April, USS TOWERS is detached and she proceeds on to Qfdney. 2 May, we arrive in Hobart and moor at Elizabeth Street Pier to begin a three day visit of celebrations, receptions and open house aboard ship. 5 May, underway for Adelaide, South Australia. 7 May, arrived in Adelaide, entered into whirl of parties, receptions, dinners and parades. The ship again is open for general visiting by the public. 9 May, Departed Adelaide, underway for Melbourne. 11 May, moored, berth 24 Melbourne Australia. Another round ofsocial and civic events in keeping with the Coral Sea Celebration. 14 MLW-UHd6fWCW bound for Guam and two week upkeep availability. 20 Mcgf-Message received diverting NAVASOTA to Subic Bcyf. TOWERS comes alongside to receive Drum and Bugle team, PIO team and Doctor Stone ly highline. 21 My-Rendezvous with USS BOLSTER, pump her up with fuel and then continue on our Way to Subic. 29 Magi-Moored at Rivera Point, Subic Bay and commence availabiligf at SRF. 4 june-Change cUfCommand ceremory was held. Captain j.G. DANIELS was relieved ly Captain j.A. LINDBECK. 15 june-Shifted berths to fuel pier Subic and took on Westpac load. At the com- pletion cyf loading we are underwcgf for operations. 19 june-Rendezvous ejected with TG 77.7 UNREP CVA and 4 DDS, 20 june-We fuel an LST which proves to be easier than we had anticipated. 21 -fUH6+R6SUPPbf at fuel pier Subic B697 and out to sea. 23 8426 june-Replenished TG 77.7. 28 fune+We resuppbf in Kaoh Siung and then back to sea. 29 june-Replenish Taiwan Patrol destrqfer and then on the wcyf to the GulfofSiam to rendezvous with TG 76.5. 3 fubl-We fuel an LPH, an LSD and a destrcyer, , 6 fubf-Alongside USS CACAPON for consolidation. f. G. Daniels III Capt. U. S. Naiy The son QF the late Senator M. Daniels of Mora Countgf, New Mexico, Captain Daniels began his naval career in May, 1938. He entered the service from Kansas Cigf, Missouri, and went to Pensacola, Florida, as a Naval Aviation Cadet until August 1939. On Sep- tember 15 of that year he was commissioned an Ensign, USNR, received his Wings , and was ordered as a Jqghter pilot to Fighting Squadron SIX, in October 1939 aboard the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE ICVA-6j. While in Honolulu, he met his wife-to-be, Helen Elizabeth Arnold, daughter qf the late Colonel and Mrs. F. T. Arnold. Thgf were married on August io, 1940. - On December 7, 1941, still attached to VF-6 he was at Pearl Harbor. Six ENTERPRISE fighter planes, after searching for the enemy late the afternoon and evening of December jth, were ordered to land at Ford Island rather than to return to the ship. Our own forces mistoolz the ENTERPRISE aircraft as enemy and destrcyed five of the six. Captain Daniels was the onbf pilot to successfulbl land his aircraft and one of two pilots to survive the Jqight. After participating in the frst battle ofthe Marshall Islands in February, 1942, he reported to NAS San Diego as a Prospective Landing Signal O-fcer with the Advanced Carrier Training Group. In june, 1942, he boarded the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE QCVA-6j again, onbf this time with Air Group TEN, as the Air Group LSO. An escort carrier shalzedown detail followed in june, 1943, and Captain Daniels became Staj' LSO for Commander Fleet Air West Coast. Upon his completion cj' dugf with C.F.A.W.C., he reported as Commanding Ojicer of Fighter Bomber Squadron TWO LVBF-25 aboard the U.S.S. SHANGRI-LA QCVA-38j from january to November, 1945, and participated in the immediate occupation of japan. Februagf, 1946 until june, 1946, Captain Daniels was Executive Ojqcer of a Sea Plane Tender, the U.S.S. ST. GEORGE LAV-165. General Line School was the next step, and he proceeded to Newport, R. I. for one year,s training bqfore departing for the Naval Air Faciligf, Honolulu, T. H., where he served as Operations Ojicer, Executive Ojqcer and Commanding Ojqcer until june 1949. Captain Daniels was, also OinC of the Utiligf Flight Unit, the Naigfs Inter Island Airwcyfs until disestablishment of the Command. Captain Daniels has received orders to report to the U.S.S. TICONDEROGA QCVA-14D, a Pacijqc Fleet Attack Carrier as Commanding Ojhicer and will be detached from NAVASOTA about 4 june 1962.
