After a vveelz of steaming and several drills at General Quarters, NAVASOTA arrived at Pearl Harbor. After a very short stty in Pearl, Punctuated Q1 inspections and a battle problem, on 16 April 1962, NAVASOTA steams out of the harbor with 27 new ship mates aboard, a 25 man detachment of the Fleet Marine Eorce Drum and Bugle Corps and a journalist and photographer of CincPacElt's PIO staji After vve clear the harbor We are joined ly USS TOWERS QDDG-93 and We are enroute to Hobart Tasmania and the frst phase of the 1962 celebration of the Battle of the Coral Sea. On 17 April, USS TOWERS is alongside for the jirst of mary actual and practice undervvryf replenishments and to tranyfer personnel by highline. The 19th of April we receive our observers baclz from TOWERS and begin serious preparations to receive King Neptune.

Shipjs History The NAVASOTA is named for a river in East Texas, and is derived from the Spanish, meaning Nativigf of De Soto fthe explorerj. NAVASOTA's continuous service in the nary since 1946, theyear she was built. She saw action during the Korean conflict and has just completed her fourteenth tour of dugf in the Ear East. During her 14 t miles, fueled hundreds of ships and seen many exotic places. Singapore, Colombo Ceyl0H, Tsincqtso, Shanghai, Ras Tanura Arabia are but afew of the ports NAVASOTA has Visited. Of more recent historical interest, on 7 April 1962, NAVASOTA got underway fIOH1 the fuel pier, San Pedro enroute to Pearl H b ' ' ar or, the jqrst leg of a cruise halfway a1'0L1I1Cl the World. We also gain one full dcgf as we cross the International Date line. 24 April, Chaplain is returned to TOWERS via Highline. 27 April, USS TOWERS is detached and she proceeds on to Qfdney. 2 May, we arrive in Hobart and moor at Elizabeth Street Pier to begin a three day visit of celebrations, receptions and open house aboard ship. 5 May, underway for Adelaide, South Australia. 7 May, arrived in Adelaide, entered into whirl of parties, receptions, dinners and parades. The ship again is open for general visiting by the public. 9 May, Departed Adelaide, underway for Melbourne. 11 May, moored, berth 24 Melbourne Australia. Another round ofsocial and civic events in keeping with the Coral Sea Celebration. 14 MLW-UHd6fWCW bound for Guam and two week upkeep availability. 20 Mcgf-Message received diverting NAVASOTA to Subic Bcyf. TOWERS comes alongside to receive Drum and Bugle team, PIO team and Doctor Stone ly highline. 21 My-Rendezvous with USS BOLSTER, pump her up with fuel and then continue on our Way to Subic. 29 Magi-Moored at Rivera Point, Subic Bay and commence availabiligf at SRF. 4 june-Change cUfCommand ceremory was held. Captain j.G. DANIELS was relieved ly Captain j.A. LINDBECK. 15 june-Shifted berths to fuel pier Subic and took on Westpac load. At the com- pletion cyf loading we are underwcgf for operations. 19 june-Rendezvous ejected with TG 77.7 UNREP CVA and 4 DDS, 20 june-We fuel an LST which proves to be easier than we had anticipated. 21 -fUH6+R6SUPPbf at fuel pier Subic B697 and out to sea. 23 8426 june-Replenished TG 77.7. 28 fune+We resuppbf in Kaoh Siung and then back to sea. 29 june-Replenish Taiwan Patrol destrqfer and then on the wcyf to the GulfofSiam to rendezvous with TG 76.5. 3 fubl-We fuel an LPH, an LSD and a destrcyer, , 6 fubf-Alongside USS CACAPON for consolidation.
