It is these men that breathe life into the inanimate tons of metal and machinegl and convert it into a living, breathing, fighting ship. Of all the various types of ships of the naxy, the Fleet Oiler is unquestionabbf one that depends on close, harmonious teamwork from all hands to be able to perform its mission. In conjunction with the ship performing its mission, her crew must be second to none as sailors. Thgl live close to the sea and must learn to un- derstand it, and when HGCGSSGIJ7, to outguess it. Thgf must lznow many jobs and be able to accomplish them under the most adverse conditions. In short thgf must be men among men. It is then, to the crew, the sailor men of USS NAVASOTA that this boolz is dedicated.

Shipjs History The NAVASOTA is named for a river in East Texas, and is derived from the Spanish, meaning Nativigf of De Soto fthe explorerj. NAVASOTA's continuous service in the nary since 1946, theyear she was built. She saw action during the Korean conflict and has just completed her fourteenth tour of dugf in the Ear East. During her 14 t miles, fueled hundreds of ships and seen many exotic places. Singapore, Colombo Ceyl0H, Tsincqtso, Shanghai, Ras Tanura Arabia are but afew of the ports NAVASOTA has Visited. Of more recent historical interest, on 7 April 1962, NAVASOTA got underway fIOH1 the fuel pier, San Pedro enroute to Pearl H b ' ' ar or, the jqrst leg of a cruise halfway a1'0L1I1Cl the World.
