SMITH, ROBERT FRANK H Age 17. "Piggy"
committed the fatal error at Boston Dec. 31, 1942,
and was shipped to Newport for his boot education
with Co. 1030. A high school stude in civilian life,
he is the dimple cheeked son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold
S. Smith of 187 Front St., Exeter, N. H. He wastes
time constructing model planes.
RYLAND, NATHANIEL B.-From Springfield,
Mass., comes "Tiny the Rebel," the pride and joy
of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel P. Ryland. He signed up
at his home town jan. 27, 1943, and received his Navy
indoctrination at Newport, R. I., as an inmate of
Co. 1030. In civilian life he worked for the Mill
River Tool Co., and spent his free time hunting
women and wild beasts.
SAWYER, JONATHAN-Age 21. 'ATom" is the
wayward brat of Mr. and Mrs. jonathan Sawyer of
Kittery Point, Maine. He blew his top at Manchester,
N. H., Dec. 13, 1942, and underwent repair at the
Newport Naval Training Station with Co. 370. Prior
to his enlistment, he was a cultivator of the soil. His
hobby is avoiding demerits. He hankers to meander
home.
SOUKUP, FRANK ALBERT-Age 19. Aviation
is "Sookey's" main diversion. A direct descendant
ol Mr. and Mrs. Soukup of 115 Division Ave., Shelton,
Conn., he enlisted at New Haven jan. 28, 1943, and
went thru boots with Co. 449 at Newport, R. I. In
more tranquil times, he earned his spending money
as a machine assembler. To become a good mech
and gunner is his aim.
SPECHT, ROBERT-Age 18. The eternal sun-
shine of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Specht, 53 Beechwood
St., Farmingdale, N. Y., "Flounder-Foot" blew his top
Dec. 21, 1942, and underwent treatment at Sampson
with Co. 117. A former employee ol the Grumman
Aircraft, he spent his free moments building model
airplanes. His goal is New York.
YOUNGS, PHILIP G.-Age 18. "Squirrel', is the
product of Orange, N. J., and the child prodigy of
Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Youngs, 206 4 Ave. Joining up at
Newark, N. AI., Dec. 21, 1942, he was shipped to New-
port, R. I., where he received his primary instruction
with Co. 453. An ex-apprentice with General Electric
Co., he is addicted to swimming, especially in water.

RIEGERT, ROBERT N. - Age 19. A good
example of what Sampson can do to a civilian, "Rab-
bitt" is the heir of Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Riegert of 2949
So. Cleveland Ave., Philadelphia, Pa. He dived off
the deep end at his home town on Oct. 30, 1942, and
trained with Co. 451. Prior to his enlistment, he was
employed by the N.A.F. Philadelphia, Pa. Reading
is his vice.
ROGGE, CARL ALBERT, JR. - Age 21. a for-
mer employee of the General Electric Co., "Sabu" is
the rosy cheeked child of Mr. and Mrs. Carl A.
Rogge of 385 So. Linden Ave., Aldan, Del. He
enlisted at Philadelphia in December, 1942, and
proceeded to the Sampson boot establishment for
preliminary training with Co. 451. Collecting auto-
graphs is his pet hobby.
ROMANOVITCH, JOHN JR. - Age 18. "Blood
Master" is the dimple jawed child of Mr. and Mrs.
John Romanovitch, 432 4 St., Blakely, Pa. He
kicked over the traces at Philadelphia Feb. 6, 1943,
and suffered at Sampson boot brig with Co. 117. In
civilian life, he was employed as a paper boy. He
whiles away his free time keeping women happy.
ROSE, DONALD C. - Age 19. An ex-inhabitant
of Johnson City, N. Y., "Jo-Jo" is the progeny of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank T. Rose of 10 Theron St. He made
his faux pas at Albany, N. Y. Dec. 13, 1942, and
wound up at the Sampson rookie institution with
Co. 448. Previously employed by the International
Business Machines Corp., he is ambitious to become
a super mech.
ROVVE, ARTHUR A. - Age 20. "Yokel" enlisted
at Portland, Maine, Jan. 29, 1943, and was incar-
cerated at the Newport boot kindergarten for indoctri-
nation. Formerly employed by the Bath lron Works,
he is the son of Mrs. Winifred L. Rowe of 582 Moin
St., Lewiston, Maine. His main mania is collecting
addresses. He hopes to make ACMM before the
duration durates.
RUTH, RICHARD IOBST - Age 18. A job as
instrument repairman with Middletown Air Depot,
Pa., provided "Babe" with wampum in his civilian
days. He is the wayward son of Senator and Mrs.
Frank NV. Ruth of Bernville, Pa., with whom he lived
before he joined up at Philadelphia, Jan. 6, 1943,
and trained with Co. 521, Sampson, N. Y. He beats
monotony playing baseball.
SAVOY, ROBERT J.-"Ensign" is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. A. Savoy of 7 College St., Canton, N. Y.
He flew the coop at Albany Nov. 17, 1942, and trained
with Co. 447 at Sampson. Previously employed by the
Chevrolet Aviation Engine Plant II, he has a weakness
for working on machines and engines. His ambition
while in the Navy is to become a flying machine
jockey.
SCHAFENBERG, HENRY - Age 28. "Schuckel-
gruberu did it at N. Y. C. Nov. 15, 1942, and served
time with Co. 515 at Sampson, N. Y. In civilian
life he was employed by the Brewster Aeronautical
Corp. as service mechanic. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Schafenberg of 260 Lenox Rd., Brooklyn,
N. Y. He spends his spare time writing letters to the
little lady.
SCOTT, PAUL GARDINER-Age 18. Sampsor.,
N. Y., trained "Scotty" for a successful hitch in the
Navy. Before signing up at Albany Feb. 5, 1943, he
was employed at a U. S. Army depot. His favorite
pastime is trying to keep out of trouble. He isthe
bright eyed son of Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner Scott of
31 Grove St., Cobleskill. N. Y. He pines for the big
citv.
SERRA, XVILLIAM G.-Age 23. "Little Kings"
foremost ambition is to continue in the aviation field.
The son of Mrs. Theresa Serra of 1111 E. Dominick
St., Rome, N. Y., he signed on the dotted line at
Albany Dec. 13, 1942, and took his medicine with
Co. 447 at the Sampson boot establishment. In the
pre-brawl era he was employed at the Rome Army
Air Base. His hobby is aviation.
SHERIDAN, VVARREN J.-Age 20. The pride
and joy of Mr. and Mrs. Rincent Sheridan of Leeds,
N. Y., Box 97, "Hobo" signed on at Albany, N. Y.,
and was railroaded to Sampson to learn the Navy
ABC's with Co. 456. ln the good old days he was
employed by the T. C. YV. fb H. Local 294. His
main ambition is to grow a long white beard. fNo

SIEGER, YVALTER A.-Age 19. "VValt" has a
yearning tobecome a class-A mech. He worked for the
Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. before he signed
up at N. Y. C. Jan. 31, 1943, and underwent indoc-
trination with Co. 470 at Sampson. The son of Mr.
and Mrs. Adolf Sieger of Oakwood Place, 1'Vest
Babylon, L. I., N. Y., he has a mania for collecting
stamps in his free time.
SMITH, DARXVIN C.-Age 18. The son of Mr.
and Mrs. Elmer Smith, with whom he lived at
Derby, N. Y., he was formerly employed at Elmer
Smith Service Station. "Eighty Eight Keyes" gave
this up to enlist in the Navy at Buffalo Jan. 5, 1943,
and was shipped to Sampson as a charter member
of Co. 449. He aspires to become a first-class AMM
before his twenty-first birthday.
SMITH, MINFORD IRVING-Age 18. "Beebee
Eyes" hails from Elizabeth, N. J., the pride and joy
of Mr. and Mrs. 1Vil1iam R. Smith. Before entering
the service he earned his spending money with E. YV.
Pike Illuminated Magnifiers. Enlisting at N. Y. C.
Jan. 6, 1943, he went through the mill with Co. 536
at the Sampson boot establishment.

BRYANT, EDYVIN FRANCIS-Age 22. Edwin
is the progeny of Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Bryant of E.
2712 8 Ave., Spokane, lllash. Prior to his enlistment,
he was employed as an aircraft instrument mechanic.
His favorite pastime is tinkering with short wave
radios. He is anxious to get a slap at the Japs, and
then mosey back to lfVashington.
ST. JOHN, LEO A.-Age 20. "Leo" is the prodi-
gal son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver St. John, Frances-
town, N. H. He made his fatal error on Jan. 27,
1943, at Manchester, N. H., and endured his boot
training with Co. 447 at Newport. An ardent sports-
man, he will make hunting Japs his specialty hence-
forth.
STEIGERNVALD, EDYVARD F. - Age 19. The
offspring of Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Steigerwald of
143 Prospect St., Lancaster, Pa., "Eddy" donned the
Navy blue in January, 1943, at Philadelphia and
launched his Navy career with Co. 968, Newport.
Formerly employed at the lyliddletown Air Depot, he
is eager to become a cadet.
SULLIVAN, JOSEPH D.-Age 18. From 2228 No.
3 St., Philadelphia, Pa., A'Curly" is the child of Mr.
and Mrs. lVi1liam Sullivan and an erstwhile knit-
ter's helper. Subsequent to his error at the city of
fraternal affection, he got his boot degree at the
Sampson rookie college with Co. 452. He yearns
to repose in the arms of Morpheus without inter-
ruptlon.
SZANVIELA, XVALTER JOHN-Age 19. "Walt"
is the pride and joy of Mr. and Mrs. Hilary Szawiela
of 2516 Pauline Ave., Schenectady, N. Y., and was
formerly employed by General Electric Co. Enlist-
ing Dec. 13, 1942, he survived eight weeks with Co.
447-F at Sampson. He hopes to learn to fly as well
as he can toot a trumpet. He is a Yankee at heart.
TATICH, MICHAEL-Age 18. "Mike" took the
bit in his teeth at Albany, N. Y., in December, 1942,
and was shipped to Sampson, where he was initiated
with Co. 447. The son of Mr. and Mrs. lVilliam
Tatich, 1609 Newell Rd., Endicott, N. Y., he toiled
as a shoemaker for the Endicott Johnson Shoe Corp.
in the days of his peerless youth.
TAYLERT, R. C.-Age 18. The pride and joy
of Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Taylert of 909 No. Cayuga
St., Ithaca, N. Y., "Later" enlisted at Buffalo Dec. 10,
1942, and was shipped to Sampson, where he took
it in the neck with Co. 449. He attended Cornell
University prior to his enlistment. He is addicted
to slumbering in his free time.
TAYLOR, XVILLIAM EDYVARD-Age 18. From
207 Linden St., Everett, Mass., "Bill" is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. l'Vi11iam H. Taylor. He signed on at
Boston Jan. 22, 1943, and took his boot degree with
Co. 446. He aspires to he a Naval aviator. Formerly
employed by the lVest Paint Sc Varnish Co., he has a
bent for philately.
