High School was designed and executed by Ann Smalansky and Gerald Powers and adopted officially in October 1955, by Father Nugent. The entire seal consists of two ele- ments: Cal the embellishment, fbi the basic shield. The embellishment is a gold crown signifying Mary's Queen- ship. The basic shield consists of a chief and right and left bases. In the chief are green mountains to designate the anthracite mountain area of Penn- sylvania. They rise against a blue sky. Superimposed on the mountains is a large gold M, signifying Mary, and across the M is a scroll bearing the school motto: "Sequere Mariam." The left base portrays a black lion rampant against a gold saw on a green field. This is taken from the coat of arms of Archbishop O'Hara. The right base displays a silver star, the star of David, one of the symbols of Mary. The star is displayed on a blue field and blue is the color of the sky in which the stars of the constellation appear on the obverse of the Great Seal of the United States, and blue is also our Lady's color. Across the center and separating the right and left bases is a black TAU cross, incorporating three silver plates or roundels. a part of the coat of arms of William Penn. In each roundel is a red cross which signifies faith, and the three crosses have been chosen in honor of the Blessed Trin- ity. The TAU cross is an early sym- bol of Christianity and was regarded as a test of Christian virtue and also as a symbol of life. Surrounding the shield is a circle containing the name and location of the school in gold letters on a green background. The school colors are green and gold. The school motto is: "Sequere Mariam" "Follow Mary." Hence the final reading: A Catholic institution of learning, dedicated to Our Lady. and erected in the moun- tain district of Pennsylvania during the archhishopric of the Most Rev. John F. U'l-lara, C.S.C., D.D. afeqmcf Foreword This is our first yearbook, published by the first senior class of Nativity B. V. M. High School. Our school opened its doors on Wednesday, Sep- tember 7, 1955. We have the privilege of telling the story of this eventful, history-making year. We leave this record as a heritage to those who will follow us. As the school grows, the story will grow and the happenings of this first year will become tradition. "Ave Maria" is the ollicial name of our yearbook. We offer it with love to our Mother Mary. The theme of this annual is the school seal. Sequere lWariam+Follow Mllrjv, is our mottog her star is our guiding light. Under her patronage we place our daily ac- tivities. Here, educated in the Catho- lic tradition, we hope to promote loy- alty to our parishes and to our school. We are grateful to our Archbishop, our pastors, and our own people who have given us this beautiful school and who have contributed in so many ways to make our high school careers a possibility.
