'lihe Association is the one organization to which every girl in school belongs. 'lihrough participation in its activities the students gain not only pleasure and skill but an understanding of National Park's high standards et sportsmanship. ln addition to its athletic activities. the association sponsors a dance at Halloween and one at Klardi Gras. The first sport of the year is hockey, which climaxes its season with the traditional lfast siderlvest side game on 'lihanksgiving Day-one of the most exciting events of the year. This year the contest ended in a tie. Following hockey came the bowling and badminton tournaments. Chiopi won the bowling cup and Kappa, the badminton cup. This year marked a really importam I'.x .x. V4 .Ei Mun' li.XIHliRINli lfl.LIUl"l', Pl'l'5iif1'Ilf Nascy Fu lf, Vin' Prmiriwrzt ln 1937, shortly after Dr. Roy Tasco Davis became president of National Park College, it became apparent that some organization was needed on campus to act as a governing body on matters of dress and conduct. Kliss Cynthia Oehler, lliss Helen lVinkler, and a Nlrs. Loyd who was here at that time went to Dr. Davis with plans for a Pan-l'lellenic board. The idea was accepted enthusiastically and a board of students, elected from the sororities, was instituted with Bliss lVinkler as sponsor. In 1939 when Bliss Nlvinkler began traveling for the school, Pan-Hellenic petitioned Dr. Dayis to appoint Kliss Uehler as their sponsor. lfnder her guidance Pan-Hellenic has progressed from a body that dictated the criterion of etiquette to the governing body of the school. Today it is the most power- ful single organization on campus. Under its control fall all matters of conduct on and oil campus, matters of dress, duties of playing hostess to visiting groups to the school, and most recently, the procedure of fire and air-raid drills. Pan-Hellenic offers constructive criticism to the girls, not from the standpoint of the faculty, but from their classmates themselves. In this capacity it is appreciated by every girl and it is the backbone of the tradition at National Park. al To Qi:- fm- akin? RIARY Ii.-XTHERINE ELLIOTT. . . NANCY FIFE ..... GENEVIEVE KULL. . . The Delta Delta chapter of this national fraternity for Junior Colleges was estahlished in National Park in 1939 to pro- mote higher attainments in scholarship. But Phi Theta Kappa stresses more than just scholarship. Leadership is the keynote, leadership in extra-curricula activities as well as academic ones. Eligibility is hased on grades. To lwelong to Phi Theta Kappa a student must helong to the upper ten per cent of the class and have not less than a B average which must he maintained in order to remain a member. Election to this fraternity is one of the most coveted honors in the school. For this reason it has done more than any other single force to raise the scholastic standing of National Pa rk. It has fostered these two, scholarship and leadership, in the students and has stood as the goal of their attainments. vi. -SI -:5: 72 L+ Qwbefzs af Qlemadc gh! IRENE KELLER ...... ,... The governing unit, the Student Council, is comprised of three oiiicers-the president, vice president and secretary. The coun- cil, aided by a proctor and monitors from each regeney, handles all disciplinary cases within the regency unit. The proctors are elected twice a year and the monitors every month. This system helps to develop in the members of the class a sense of responsibility and a knowledge of working democracy as applied to our daily lives. +24 87 E+ EMMA I. Since the founding of Chiopi, the first sorority, in 1894, they have become the centers of campus activity. Each one has a different architectural plan and is an entirely independent organization but they are bound together by a common purpose-to develop a more vital interest in academic and recreational activities and to encourage a deeper school spirit. Through active membership in them, the girls become gracious hostesses and more capable leaders. They learn to know one another bette1', to respect each other's rights and opinions, and to work together in a spirit of cooperation and loyalty. The inter- sorority competitions in athletics, citizenship, and scholarship stimulate enthusiasm and effort in these fields. 5 134. - , Each sor01'ity is guided by an advisor, who Ll' fgl l f' i acts as a "mother" not only to the sorority as a whole, but to each girl as an individual. Every girl who enters National Park finds in these associations deep and lasting memories of fine friendships and experiences.
